A grandmother and her granddaughter were killed Wednesday in a shooting at an automotive plant near Frankfort, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office said.

Gunshots rang out around 4:15 p.m. during a shift change at NHK Seating of America Inc. Pamela Sledd, 62, arrived at the plant with her granddaughter, 21-year-old Promise Mays, when the shooter fired in the parking lot, police said.

'The plant, located at State Road 28 and I-65, is roughly 50 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

Clinton County Sheriff Rich Kelly said the suspected shooter, identified by police as Gary Ferrell, left the scene in a blue Ford. Deputies took him into custody after a brief pursuit that ended in at a construction zone.

The relationship between the two women and the suspect is unclear. All three are NHK employees. Kelly said police are trying to determine a motive.

"We don't know what the catalyst was to make this happen," Kelly told reporters. "This was shift change; there were a lot of other people in the area."

No one else was hurt in the shooting, the sheriff's office said.

The shooting led NHK to stop production for the day. The plant, which employs about 700 people, makes automotive seats, according to its website.

A tragic day for the citizens of Clinton County.
