Indiana Career Rushing Record Watch

144 posts in this topic

Elwood High School senior RB Sammy Mireles is one special season away from breaking Otis Shannon's all-time state career rushing yards record. Sammy has amassed 5,391 yards (according to varvee) through his junior year.

He needs 2,170 yards to break the record. Below is his 3 yr breakdown.

Freshman- 860 yds

Sophomore- 2071 yds

Junior- 2460 yds

We will keep this thread updated throughout the year.

Let the countdown begin!

What kind of offense does Elwood run?

What is the kids size?

How is the o line this year compared to others?

Is the Elwood schedule strong or weak compared to the last 3 years?

5'9" 170lbs with a quick google search.

Surprised he's not listed on any of the major recruiting services with those numbers.

Ahhh!!!  You have to hate those short little pinball types of running backs.  Tough to see and by the time you do they have ran between your legs.

Shotgun Spread look. They used a tight end as well as 2 backsets alot, when I saw them this summer.

Yep, Pinball type. He isn't a scat back though. He will flat out lay the wood on people.

OLine from what I saw looked good. With him and his backfield mate (not sure who he is, but he's a good looking player too), they will make average linemen look really good.

Not sure, and time will definitely tell after we get a few weeks to see people live.

Hmm, makes Derrik Henry's 11,000 yard record look that much more impressive huh?

As a frosh we ran a two back set where Sammy acted as the fullback. The last two seasons we ran a straight Ace set with him as the lone back. This year we've switched to the spread as his little brother Alex is a dual threat QB and we are trying to accommodate his skill set as well as introducing Bryce Graves as the fullback. Carries will be shared this season but 2170 is still a definite possibility. The best thing about Sammy's accomplishments thus far is that he is within shouting distance of the all-time record despite playing only 31 career games so far. (1 over the minimum) Elwood is expected to make it to regionals this year so those added few games might be just enough to push him over the top.

Excellent and accurate point.

The QB this year is his very athletic younger brother. They play 3 likely season long top 10 teams (Scecina, Tipton, Eastbrook) plus good Oak hill and Mississinewa teams. Sectional isn't loaded so they could make a run.

Sammy does get a lot of carries (multiple 40 and 50+ carry games. But, he is Elwood's best chance to win and he has great YPC stats. Tough first two games for him this year

Sammy is an incredible talent, but the CIC is much improved this season and he might just find it hard to get those 200 - 300 yard games that he has racked up in the past.  Not saing he won't do it.  Actually I really like this kid and I am rooting for him to make it.  This kid is an awesome back, but what alot of people might not know is he is even a better person.  Really nice kid, I hope he breaks the record!   I just hope he takes easy on the Eastbrook Panthers this year.

Good luck to the young man......as far as the mention of the playoffs though; can someone verify as to whether playoff stats count in season and all time records? For some reason, I am thinking they do not count.

This Friday will be a test then as Scecina has a good defense!

No doubt! I think they are the only defense that has kept him under 100 yards in a game since his freshman year.

Ball State inquired about him playing slot receiver. The recruiting trail has been cold as far as I've heard.

Surprised St. Francis hasn't come calling.  They normally scoop up these good local kids.

Volume of carries, yes. If little bro and Graves can garner some attention from the defense, the big plays will be there. The kid was a home run hitter the last two years even with 11 men keyed on him. Having some other guys shoulder the load will only help IMO.

I agree with halfbackpass. If Alex Mireles and Bryce Graves can make a few plays to start games, it will hopefully open up some room for Sammy. Still, no matter how well Alex and Bryce play, Sammy will still get plenty of attention from opposing defenses. More than ready for an exciting season and to see what #24 has in store for us this year!
