Hunter Johnson Decommits from Tenn to Clemson

And I get the feeling this might not be his final destination either. Going to be a long 14 mos until he can sign, unless he graduates early

He's been through more then 1 school system, so committing to one place hasn't been the easiest thing to do so far.

Hope its not another Kiel situation.

Verbal commitments by players mean nothing just like scholarship offers by schools mean nothing.  Only thing that matters is signing day.

The real question is whether this change was player driven(change of mind) or school driven(backed off interest)

As a ND fan, I've followed his recruitment a little. IMO it seems like he's looking at early playing time, not sure he'd find that in South Bend or in Tennessee since I think they've signed a few qbs this cycle and/or last. I can't imagine what it's like for these 16, 17, 18 year old kids trying to find the school for them, especially a player so highly sought after like Hunter. Not sure if Clemson will be his final destination, but I hope he makes the right choice for him and not for anyone else and represents the state of Indiana wherever he ends up!!

Haven't we been here before?  If I recall, Gunner Kiel committed to IU then went to LSU before ending up at ND behind Everett Golson.....after a year, decided to transfer to Cincy because of playing time and as luck would have it Golson became academically ineligible....before transferring to FSU.

This kid might be a great player, with a chance of playing on Sundays. But that is, with all due respect to him, a very long shot. I hope there's someone who has his ear encouraging him to make his college choice without regard to playing time, type of offense, coaches' personality, or any factors other than where he can get the education that will set him up best for a life outside of football.

I can assure you his mother and father have that covered........quite the professional resumes.  His brother is currently playing football at Northwestern.  That is definitely a non-issue.

Not close....kids change their initial commitment all the time.  One change is not an issue....now if he makes repeated flips, then we have a discussion.

Took Gunnar awhile, but he got it right....having a great career at Cincy.

Out of curiosity it seems i read an article somewhere that said Hunters father/grandfather? or uncle played high school football at bedford north lawrence a while ago . Anyone know if that is true or not.  Apparently the Johnson that played at bnl was one of their best all time qb's

Hunter's Dad was an excellent QB at BNL....went on to the Univ of Evansville to play football, back when they still had a program.  His Dad's senior year, took BNL to the playoffs back when teams had to qualify.  The only 2 losses for the Stars that season were against Blair Kiel and the Columbus East team that won the 3A (largest class at the time) state championship.

Thx. I was starting to second guess myself and almost didn't ask. Not losing my mind after all..  I did not know bnl ever made the playoffs during the qualifying era either. And had no clue evansville ever had a program . Nice to know.

As a Clemson fan I was very excited to hear this. I'm looking forward to catching a Brownsburg game or two to see Mr Johnson in person. Deshaun Watson is a true sophomore. He should be a Day 1 draft pick in '17 if he were to declare. Our current backup is a freshman named Kelly Bryant. He is the cousin of Steelers standout WR Martavis Bryant. He is a dual-threat QB and a very good one at that. It would be an interesting battle of differing skill sets between him and Johnson once Watson leaves.

Will Hunter be at Brownsburg next fall or is he going to IMG in Florida? Or was that just a rumor I got caught up in?

University of Evansville had a pretty good program in the 1980's under Randy Rogers.  They were known all "air Rogers" & threw the ball 50 times a game.  They were fun to watch in D2.  Rogers left to join Illinois staff & then followed Mackovic to Texas.  Today he runs a recruiting service in TX.  He & Red Faught at Franklin were ahead of their time with spread offenses.  UE dropped football sometime in the mid 1990's & hasn't returned it despite many efforts of the former players & alumni.  Former assistants at UE under Rogers included John Butler (went on the be the GM of the Bills & Chargers), Jeff Morrow (was on Schnellenburger's staff at UL & is with the Panthers now) & Mike Alden (former AD at Missouri).

Gibson Southern's strength coach was the UE strength coach

Yes, a big mistake that not many involved at UE would deny as they look at an ever-declining male enrollment. We still use purple footwork bags that are likely the last vestiges of Purple Aces football besides what the players removed before they turned out the lights... If UE brings it back, I could see our alumni helping to fund a campus stadium as a joint venture.

I believe there is a pretty long thread on UE football on the old digest.  But, I'm too lazy to look it up.  Perhaps someone can provide the link?

Not sure what's going on in Cincinnati but Kiel will not be making the trek to Hawaii for UC's bowl game.

Cue beat dead horse......but UE joins non-scholarship Pioneer League with BU/VU/UD......using very simple math......UE gets 100 players paying on average $35-45k per year (similar to Butler)........ Football budget of $750k....net to UE of $2.5 - $3.5.....and gets the coveted 100 additional male students.

The only negative....it makes to much sense which is why it will never happen.
