  1. IHSAA calls it "unique," which is laughable. There's a reason only one state does it this way, because it's really kind of stupid. If the Brownsburg/Ben Davis game didn't open eyes, than nothing will. What would Texas, California, Georgia, or Ohio say if they were told, "by the way, the two best teams in the state are going to meet in the first round." They'd declare lunacy. Would these same people who voted against seeding vote for a blind draw for the college football playoff? We all know the answer to that. Kudos to Bob Gaddis for his politically correct response.

  4. I believe this is the “equity” I am always hearing about modern education. Punish the high end students/programs to cater to the low performing ones. Pretty soon we are going to have a “redistribution” of accomplishments and Brownsburg is going to have to forfeit 3 of their wins and give them to Pike so that no one’s feelings get hurt and everyone can tout their “accomplishments.”

  7. Man, I despise politics with a passion, but the right wing, extremist, attitude of the IHSAA is very troubling and reeks of the good old boy network. How many out of touch old fools does it take to use just a tad bit of common sense and seed a tournament?

  8. The Brownsburg and Ben Davis game of 2023 (if there already wasn't a better example) SHOULD have been the eye opener. Unless you're living under a rock (which apparently some of the powers that be are doing). Bob's a great guy and I'm glad I (along with all of you) have the reading ability to know what Bob really means/ wants to say here. Lol

  10. oh yeah...when I am filing my taxes each year, I fixate on that local tax....that one's the killer!!!! Seriously, my beef with taxes is the feds....I appreciate not paying additional taxes across the board and not a fan of rising property tax...but the vast majority of my tax dollars isn't consumed at the local level.

  11. "Unique," lol. "The blind draw gives teams with poor records a chance to play somebody they could possibly beat in the first round. " Didn't that ship leave the port when Team A spent more time weight training in the off-season than Team B? I know this for certain even though I'm over 100 miles away. Those Brownsburg seniors busted their tails for four years for their shot at the state title. This wonderful idea the IHSAA came up with (something 49 other states scratch their heads at), sent those kids packing after one game. Shame on the IHSAA.

  14. Alright, I am in the middle of a Bahamas cruise and way too much alcohol so I guess I rattled some cages with my “right wing” comment. I am way too lit to even try and have a normal conversation and the ball and chain is chewing my tail for even being on the “Net”. If the old cronies can’t figure out that it is best to seed the tourney then there is no hope going forward to have a good tournament. Seeing the best 2 teams playing in the first round is ludicrous. When I sober up in a few days, I will send BTF a PM and tell him where my right wing comment came from. At this point, I ain’t sure…🍺🍺🍺

  15. The majority of high school AD’s do not have quality or good high school football programs. For those ADs at those schools, it was an easy no brainer vote to turn it down. They prefer the random draw because they do not want to get stuck playing the best seeds and teams each and every year. It’s not right, it’ll be very difficult to ever get past this ancient random draw rule.

  16. Exactly. There’s the problem. Schools vote their individual interests. No one is interested in what’s best for Indiana high school football.

  17. PM me. Educate me on the IHSAA having a right wing extremist attitude. I too was surprised that 79% of AD's voted against. I would have guessed closer to 50/50. But if we really dig deep, 79% of the programs probably know they're not making a run to state anyway. So maybe the blind draw is a better opportunity for those schools to advance as far as they can.

  19. Really good point. Also, it's weird to be used as a prop for PR as a high schooler and the guys aren't exactly bouncing off the walls listening to the strength coach. @BLACKGOLD2007 I share a bit of the sentiment in that I don't care for handling our business through this type of contrived PR stunt––I have to believe this is Thacker's work. I'd expect a high school's PR misstep wouldn't be enough to affect your optimism given the number of your thoughtful and intelligent contributions to this board.

  21. Since 2018, states have taken in $4.33 billion in tax revenue from sports betting. Sports betting is now legal in 38 states plus the District of Columbia, with states raking in $4.33 billion in tax revenue since the Supreme Court ruled in 2018 that states could legalize sports betting. And that’s just the tax revenue. The amount wagered is many multiples of that. With that much money in play, it seems a foregone conclusion that there will be those who want to get a slice of that by manipulating outcomes. There is a potential gambling scandal brewing in the NBA right now, springing from the proliferation of “prop” bets based on individual statistics. It’s a lot easier for a single player to influence statistics like 3 pt. shot attempts, assists, turnovers, etc., than to determine the outcome of a game. The confluence of gambling and fantasy sports creates unlimited opportunities to skew results. The NFL and other leagues are now so heavily invested in sports gambling that anything that suggests to bettors that the games are not on the up and up will be dealt with swiftly and severely. And it is spreading to college sports as well … which are not nearly as closely monitored as pro sports. Look for lifetime bans and criminal prosecutions. We have been used to TV networks exerting major influence on game times, pace of play, and other aspects of the games. Is the day far off when the large gambling concerns like Bally, Draft Kings, MGM, etc., will have that type of influence?

  23. https://theathletic.com/5372615/2024/03/27/ncaa-president-charlie-baker-prop-betting/ NCAA president Charlie Baker wants ban on prop bets in college sports By David Ubben 5h ago NCAA president Charlie Baker wants a ban on prop bets in college sports, he said in a statement released Wednesday. “The NCAA is drawing the line on sports betting to protect student-athletes and to protect the integrity of the game – issues across the country these last several days show there is more work to be done,” Baker said. Prop bets allow fans to bet on how many points or rebounds a basketball player might have, or yards or touchdowns a football player might have, instead of or in conjunction with a game’s outcome or spread. Fans can bet on the outcomes of games but in many of the 38 states where sports betting is legal, prop bets are not allowed in college sports. Baker wants that reach extended to all states. “This week we will be contacting officials across the country in states that allow these bets and ask them to join Ohio, Vermont, Maryland and many others and remove college prop bets from all betting markets,” Baker said. Some players have been subject to individualized harassment if their play resulted in a prop bet going against bettors, regardless of the outcome of the game. Baker has previously explored legislation that would create a “prohibited bettors list” of people who were known to harass players and coaches. Baker, who played basketball at Harvard, has opposed prop bets in college sports since taking over as president last March. “I think prop betting in some respects is one of the parts I worry about the most,” Baker told CBS News in November. On Monday, the NBA also announced that Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter was under investigation by the league for betting irregularities surrounding prop bets that involved Porter. In two separate games, he left the game early with injuries, allowing bettors to cash in on multiple prop bets that made them the most profitable for bettors on that day, according to a media release from DraftKings. Loyola Maryland coach Tavaras Hardy resigned earlier this month after Loyola said it had removed a person from the program after it became aware of a gambling violation. The Associated Press reported that Hardy was not the person removed from the program for the gambling violation. U.S. Integrity, a gambling watchdog group employed by many sports leagues and teams, also flagged unusual betting patterns surrounding a pair of Temple University basketball games earlier this year. That group flagged the activity surrounding Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon last year when Bohannon was fired for giving an associate inside information on his lineup that he used to attempt to place bets on Alabama baseball.

  24. As gambling becomes more prevalent, it’s only a matter of time before there’s a big scandal. All the gambling apps advertise on sports tv, as I see it the various sports governing bodies are OK with it, as long as there’s money coming in.

  28. I know the trend has been to limit all kicks as much as possible. That being said perhaps I’m naive, but I don’t see onside kicks being overly used in the HS game, and much like a shot clock in BK, I don’t think it has a place in the HS game…..yet.

  32. To be quite fair to Faith, while most religious institutions tend to do for them and theirs, Faith has worked with the local government to provide some facilities for the use of the community as a whole and not just their congregation. Faith built the, currently, only skate park in the Lafayette area and it's open to the community. Even when folks were worried that Faith's current expansion efforts might end up overrunning that park, Faith has committed to the community that it will find space on its grounds to make sure that there will be an available skate park. My main surprise with them building a football stadium is that, they had a rental deal with Jeff last season for 8-man that cost them pretty close to nothing. The issue is likely that, with the move to 11-man, that arrangement would be much tougher to pull off because 8-man usually played on Saturdays. Then again, Cathedral has used other institutions' ground for their home field too and, with five other schools with very nice facilities in the Lafayette area, I'd have to imagine that at least one of them would be open on any given Friday night. Toss in Benton Central just up the road less than a half hour and there's a half dozen locations. Until Faith gets stable in football, it would seem like a better fiduciary route. Of course, Faith's always been known for soccer around here, so perhaps it's being built as a soccer venue that allows football to be played on the pitch as opposed to the traditional Indiana setup of a football field with the orange and blue spray paint on the gridiron.

  34. Who knows as one angy Chicago radio caller just said, Caleb could be the Black Baker Mayfield. My fear on this miss doesn't come from Daniels or Maye. Between those 2, I would take Maye. Here's me being picky: I don't like how smiley Daniel's is when losing. And I think he's benefitted greatly from Brian Kelley's offense and the WR's he has. Maybe I'm wrong and he's like Burrow was and is playing at an NFL level himself with NFL WR's. My fear is McCarthy becomes the best QB in this draft. He just strikes me as a Tom Brady guy that can lead a team of men, get excellence from his teammates and never be afraid of a challenge. I rewatched that Rose Bowl game during some down time over the weekend. That kid is loved by his teammates.

  36. Your first sentence leads one way and your second sentence leads the other. You must be an independent. Seriously. I do think there's a correlation between taxes and quality of life. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. But I'll never skimp when it comes to our high schools. Professional sports take take a hike.

  37. It's fun to watch as a fan, but the best team doesn't always win in that scenario. I'll take the turf. As a taxpayer, I'm all for anything that improves the high school experience for young people. If that means the band gets to perform on a 1.5 million turf field instead of the mud, then I'm all in. The reason many people gripe about taxes is because it takes away from things like their $150 North Face jacket when they could buy an off brand for $40 that's probably just as good in quality. God forbid if you can't afford to go out and enjoy dinner for two for $100. Go to Applebee's instead. Sure it's less trendy and you're not going to impress your peers while they are out at St. Elmo's, but at least you'll have more money in your pocket for things that are a bit more important.

  42. I second that. Ten dollars to support your local athletic department is too much, but $120.00 is perfectly ok to support a bunch of guys you don't know from all over the United States who are highly over priced for the value they bring to the world. But that's just me.

  44. More wasted taxpayer dollars. And increased serious injury opportunities for the children playing on such a surface (this is well documented, I will not get into another discussion concerning this proven point again.) All so somebody doesn't have to mow the grass, paint some lines, and sometimes wash muddy uniforms.
