  3. 46 years at Scecina as an assistant and head coach...quite an impressive run. He was an assistant coach there for all 5 of my brothers. The last of my brothers graduated in 1982; probably the most infamous class in Scecina history. 😄 Coach Hurrle is a class act, and so many have been blessed to be on his teams and in his classrooms. Best of luck Coach Hurrle in your retirement. https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/high-school/2024/03/14/indiana-high-school-football-coaching-legend-ott-hurrle-retires-scecina-memorial-ihsaa/72972519007/

  4. Coach Hurrle is definitely one of the good guys and truly a legend in the coaching ranks. His years of service have meant so much for the school and the east side of Indianapolis. He will be missed but wish him the best in his well deserved retirement. Ott was a few years ahead of me at Scecina so I didn’t play for him but two of my brothers did (75 & 76). Two of my sons played for him, one was a sophmore on the 94 team that was arguably their best team. They were the last team to beat Roncalli and unfortunately lost their running back (Donald Winston) to an injury in the semi state game. Lost that game by one as the second attempt of the point after was botched, the first one was good but flag was thrown late for an equipment infraction (mouthpiece wasn’t in on a lineman). The story for that experience was always something I marveled at as the holder talked about his experience at the senior retreats for the next couple of years. Great guy and highly successful. Coach left the next year and unfortunately my son suffered thru a winless senior year. The other son was on the state losses as a sophmore and junior. (I know 20 years apart as I had kids in there for 20 out of 21 straight years. 🤓 ) They were the team that was moved up for being to successful when they never won a championship. That term has always baffled me as you look back at that move when it happened. It was an overtime game in the semi state against Linton. Scecina kicked a field goal to go up 3. Linton takes it to fourth and goal from the one. Could have kicked the field goal but decided to go for the win. So if they score they go to state and Scecina stays in 1A and has a good shot at state the next year. If they stop them on one play they are deemed to successful. Got to admit that play was pretty awesome. Now I have a grandson that played as a freshman on the varsity team. It was a little scary as he was only about 115lbs. His first interaction with Coach Hurrle was hilarious in films after his first catch. Scored a couple of touchdowns and had a great year. The thing is that anyone involved with this program thru the Hurrle years could give you stories that would reflect the same feelings. He coached football but developed character. Job Well Done Coach and Enjoy your retirement

  5. My 2 cents: I first saw Westfield when they came up to play Merrillville in the semistate in November, 2020. Before the game even started, I knew Merrillville was in trouble. Even in the pregame, you could see Westfield was extremely well-organized and disciplined. And that’s the way they played. Not extraordinarily athletic, but no missed assignments, no bad body language, no stupid penalties. Their sideline ran as smoothly as I’ve ever seen in a great big game on the road. In that regard, I felt they were comparable to Center Grove. In my view, these are the signs of a very well-coached team: discipline and execution. In the times I’ve seen them after that, same thing.

  7. Is this really what some people in big schools worry about? Does it eat away at your person every time a 1A champion is crowned? I mean, find something worthwhile to worry about in life. Sheesh. Oh, and they already do this. Class 1A State Champion Class 2A State Champion, etc.

  8. Quick. Someone tell Snider its championship is devalued since 5A only had 31 teams last year.

  10. How can it not be? Apparently this is what the American citizens want. I see NO positive outcome from this election. My only hope is whoever loses shuts the f…up and rides off into the sunset….. But we all know this ends in a shitstorm.

  11. Saw reports there was 4 or 5 suitors asking for JF, but JF's Agent requested that those teams not be the final destination and led them to Pittsburgh. I believed Poles then and I do now, when he said he was going to "do right' for JF when he makes his decision. Rooting for the kid.

  13. No doubt whatsoever. Probably the best player with his hand in the dirt since Reggie White. But — and I heard this on the radio today — please stop with the comparisons to Lawrence Taylor as the greatest defensive player of all time. LT completely revolutionized the way 2 different positions — offensive tackle and outside linebacker — were played. They had to invent a new position (“edge rusher”) to describe what he did. Just read The Blind Side. Or, you can just ask Joe Theismann. 😉

  14. I'm all in for a second high school. More opportunities for kids. Think about it, double the number of kids playing in all athletics. I think these large mega schools are a disservice to the community.

  15. When it comes to athletics, we all know that it's not "all about the kids" in most cases (yes, there are outliers). It's all about the egos. Anyone who thinks differently is just kidding themselves.

  20. Just putting this out there: Gateway in INdiana where this data comes from is ANY MONEY the school corp pays you. For instance, when I look at my "gateway" number, it is more than the teaching contract with the 2 varsity sports I coach and its stipends. I do Middle School reffing for my AD, school has to put it on my payroll , which came from central office decision, so be it, but those type of things raises the number on Gateway. Just throwing it out there.

  22. That's a great question. I'm in agreement with you as far as "I don't think you can put a price tag on the development of young people," is concerned. Which is why whether coach Gilbert (or others like him) is compensated via an ever flowing athletic revenue stream or a community-wide tax "burden" (we both agree on the definition of burden here), I don't believe it matters. I believe he is fairly compensated for the work he's done/ doing and that if more places around the state (and dare I say country) followed suit, they would in turn see similar success and therefore enhance the culture of their schools and communities.

  24. 1. Money, great SES, two parent households, etc. 2. One of, if not THE fastest growing area of population in the state. 3. Facilities are top notch. 4. Best conference in Indiana FORCES them to stay competitive (a rising tide raises all boats). 5. Recent state championship appearance/success that can be sold as a cultural piece to the current crop of student athletes. 6. Pay/teaching schedule. Just my opinion.

  26. If this is a legitimate concern, we could just utilize our brain power (decision makers) and write a clause or bylaw into the classification rules that would allow 1A to be corrected/ adjusted to always have 32 teams, given extreme circumstances such as "teams in 1A drop football or close all together in a 2 year cycle, (list other reasons), or otherwise." I was even kind enough to begin drafting the clause for 'em! Lol I'll be honest, one of my primary reasons for supporting 1A having 32 teams as opposed to 5A is the health and safety of the 1A players. Do we truthfully believe that it's "more grueling" for 5A schools with rosters of anywhere from 50-100 guys to go through their season than it is for 15-35 guys on 1A rosters, most of whom are playing all 3 ways? Let's give those 1A guys the extra week to get healthy before the postseason. Valpo, Merrillville, Whiteland, Decatur Central, and the like will manage just fine without a Bye, in my opinion. My initial thought/ question. I just decided to play along and attempt a solution for HoopsCoach's proposed problem.

  27. Not really a surprise to the locals here. Coach Gilbert ran for Westfield mayor last year, but lost to current mayor Scott Willis in the May Republican primary. With Coach Miracle taking over, a long time Gilbert assistant, the program is in good hands.

  28. The whole Fields discourse has really brought out the fact that most people watching do not actually know anything about football. He ran the same offense for two years in a row and did not improve even slightly (in the QB-friendly Shanahan system, I might add). The OL discourse is mute because sacks are mostly a QB stat (something most people just can’t seem to wrap their head around), driven home even more so by the fact that Bagent had about half the sack rate in 5 games playing behind the exact same OL. Pretty telling that Nagy and Getsy also both got jobs immediately after they left. All advanced passing stats say that he was a bottom 5 QB in the NFL this year.

  30. I don't understand how Fields has turned into a martyr. 3 years of film exists. And for 3 years experts who view the all 22 will tell you he can't see open WR's, holds the ball too long and is incapable of throwing WR's open. Seems like all of this is swept under the rug because it's the Bears and they're an easy punching bag. Yes, he dealt with injuries in the OL that created inconsistency and he dealt with rotating coaches. You can't give him a free pass on skills you need from your QB just because the infrastructure surrounding the QB is going to get better. Especially when you have a solid QB class in front of you and a chance to restart the clock on the QB payscale.

  36. 2 privates just beat 2 publics in 3A Semistate semis. St Joe & Guerin Catholic may meet up in 14 days at State Finals. In 2A, Park Tudor got knocked off by Brownstown Central (hooray!) In the other bracket, defending champion FW Blackhawk is looking for yet another small class title. In addition to the Success Factor, the IHSAA should incorporate an enrollment multiplier as some states do-- multiply p/p enrollment by 1.5 to determine their class. But they never will...

  37. There are discussions about a 3rd high school in the the SE corner of the county. I have no idea how serious those are or if its likely to happen. Geographically it would seem a 3rd school would probably have to be up near Lapel, off of 32 or 38...not much open land anywhere else. HSE currently has 4 junior high schools, so how those would spread between 3 high schools would be interesing (unless the plan was to also add some Jr high schools or restrucure what they do with grades 5-8.) Interesting thought problem about Indy Metro athletic confernces....If HSE and Westfield add another high school each in the next decade.....how will that change HCC/MIC/etc? https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=197NFgLcxNzY2NbagYL5uavc3RsRmrmiJ&scrlybrkr=180f3c06&ll=40.015709144062015%2C-85.9691205&z=12

  38. I do not get why so many are so high on Xavier. When he is on, he is unstoppable, with shooting and passing. My issue is that he so rarely shows that level of play. I see much more of him dribbling into traffic, putting up crazy shots, throwing passes that are way off. He just seems to be responsible for far too many turnovers. That said, that ranking list was from June. There were very high expectations for him back then. I did not see it then either. I rarely agree with Dakich on things, but blogger boys is hilarious; and sooo true.

  40. I think it'll happen. Town and Ditch are getting developed from 146th all the way up to 32. Spring Mill and Oak Ridge are pretty much "there" and any open land is getting developed. North of 32, there are developments scattered around Ditch, Spring Mill, Grand Park, and up to Chatham Hills Golf Club. NE of the HS there's a lot of developments going in around 191st street over to the Noblesville border. I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up capping out around 3,500 in the future.

  44. I believe what he is saying is that less than 32 teams would devalue a championship. 5A and 6A have 32 currently and have a much less of a chance at shutting down a program before the season begins or not being able to finish because of injury. 1A could begin with 32 and be at 28 by the end of a two year cycle. I know a few years ago (2021?) we had at least two 1A schools shut the program down right before the season began. It's not a ridiculous thing to consider.

  45. How ironic would it be if the Bears were “stuck” with Fields because they couldn’t unload him … and then he turned into the multi-threat franchise QB we saw flashes of this past season? You can bet everyone would be lined up to take credit for that, when the reality is they busted their butts to try and ship him out of town.

  46. Swift I think is a interesting signing for Bears, reasonable price, but not stupid price, essentially a 2 year contract. Love the Safety Byrad signing and especially the price also. Now with all the QB movements that have occurred: What is logically known? Vikings (just signed Sam Darnold) Pats (Just signed Jacoby Brisett) Commanders. (Still has Sam Howell) 11th, 3rd, 2nd picks How bout this scenario: Vikings send: Justin Jefferson, 11th overall, 4th/5th in 2024: 1st and 3rd in 2025: 2nd in 2026 For 1st overall Pick in 2024: 4th in 25: 3rd in 26. Extend JJ right away. Draft J.J. at 9 Draft best EDGE/BOARD PLAYER at 11. Fields plays next 2 years with JJ and behind him. Give Bears a chance to see if this Coach can unlock talent of Fields, if he does and he turns out to be that guy, then you have trade capitol of JJ LETS GO!!!

  47. How much value is there in a 1A state championship after 3-4 teams in the class drop football or close all together in a 2 year cycle? That is my primary reason for opposing 1A having only 32 schools.
