  1. It has happened several times for Reitz. Both Bob Gaddis (now at Columbus East) and Tony Lewis (then at Henderson County in Kentucky) coached against their former team. Dan
  2. Nice article but you'd think they would've mentioned the fact they are rejoining the Hoosier Heartland. Delphi was a member from 1992-1997. http://www.almanacsports.com/football/conference.php?conf_id=hoosierheartland Dan
  3. Happy to announce the publication of the Indiana High School Football All-State Player Database, updated to include all-state players from 1906-2017. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1973467720/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_U_x_QQNpAbCRA9440 As a thank you, 10% of the net proceeds will be donated to this community! Just forward a copy of your receipt to dengler@almanacsports.com. Thanks! Dan Engler
  4. Hello everyone. I've just published my latest book on the history of Indiana high school football. With the end of the 2017 IHSAA playoffs, we invite you to take a trip back in time to the state's original playoff series, the Northern Indiana Playoff. Started in 1930, the playoff traditionally matched the eastern and western divisions of the Northern Indiana High School Conference and produced several mythical state champions. The playoff discontinued in 1972 with the advent of the IHSAA playoffs the following year. To purchase the book, click here. Get the book & support the Gridiron Digest Thanks to the TGD staff for letting me promote, and as a thank you, I'll donate 10% of the proceeds from all book and ebook sales (just email me to let me know you purchased). Thanks, Dan Engler AlmanacSports.com
  5. I remember our referee was not popular so we made our linesman the crew chief, so a new name appeared on ballots. We did see an improvement in our rating even though the crew was the same. Another time we were honored to work chains at the state finals. However, on the field was a longtime crew, but the back judge was working his first state title game in his first year refereeing football. No grudges about it, just two examples of how the setup is flawed. Dan
  6. AP All State

I have a book that chronicles all the All-State teams since 1906. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1521894655 Is there something specific that I can help you with? Dan "Rudy" Engler

  8. PCS rankings - Week 5 I've been compiling the PCS rankings (similar to the old BCS) as time permits for the past 10 years, and I'm happy to announce the Week 5 PCS rankings are now online! http://www.almanacsports.com/article.php?news_id=2017091301 Here are the No. 1 teams in each class: 6A: Ben Davis (4-0) 5A: Roncalli (4-0) 4A: Evansville Reitz (4-0) 3A: Gibson Southern (4-0) 2A: Eastbrook (4-0) 1A: Pioneer (4-0) Remember these are for entertainment purposes only Thanks and enjoy, Dan "Rudy" Engler AlmanacSports.com 2017 PCS Rankings - Week 5.pdf
  9. The cluster system

Good point. To be honest I'm not sure. I love the all-in system. A qualification system would make Indiana high school football more exciting for many, but still not convinced it would improve it for everyone. Dan
  10. The cluster system

I hear you, and I know this is the exception and not the rule, but I find it hard to believe that a qualification system could make this rivalry any better.
  11. The cluster system

With all due respect, to say that the regular season has no meaning, I cannot agree with that. True, the games have no bearing on the postseason pairings, but to say the regular season doesn't matter, please come check out the Reitz Bowl during Week 9 when Reitz & Mater Dei slug it out in front of 12,000 fans. I would argue they believe that game means something. Dan
  12. FYI - The game limit went from 10 games to 8 in 1985 when the all-in playoffs started. Since the tournament was expanded (from 4 rounds to 6), they lost two regular season games so teams could still only play a max of 14 games. Scrimmage was added in 1995 so teams played that & a jamboree for two seasons. In 1997, teams had option of replacing jamboree with ninth regular season game, which of course most did.
  13. I'd love to see how those graphs play out. Let me know if you need any information. Another interesting point with the numbers that I thought of...in any 4-year period, the W/L record a team sustains can be vastly different yet result in the same points. For instance, say a program earns 4 points in an four-year period. If they won a state title, that year they went 6-0, but might have lost in the first round the other three years for a 6-3 record. Conversely, if a team won sectional each of those four years, they would be 12-4. Same amount of points in nine games played vs. sixteen. Dan
  14. While the IHSAA uses a two-year snapshot to measure each team's tournament success, we wondered what the results would be if we applied that formula to the entire history of the IHSAA football playoffs, from 1973 to present day. Well, the mathematicians at AlmanacSports.com have done just that, and we would like to share the results with you. Fort Wayne Luers and Indianapolis Chatard tied for first place with 66 points. Remember, for each season, teams could earn one point for a sectional championship, two for a regional, three for a trip to semi-state or four for winning state. Here is how the rest of the top teams rank: 66: Fort Wayne Luers, Indianapolis Chatard 63: Carmel, Indianapolis Cathedral 53: Ben Davis, Sheridan 51: Fort Wayne Dwenger, Penn 49: Roncalli 46: Hobart 44: Fort Wayne Snider, Jimtown 42: Indianapolis Ritter 39: Warren Central 36: Evansville Mater Dei 33: Andrean, NorthWood 30: Tri-West 29: Adams Central 28: Jasper, Lafayette Central Catholic 27: Franklin Central 26: Bremen, Lawrenceburg 25: Evansville Reitz 24: Bloomington South, Heritage Hills 23: Center Grove, East Central 22: Columbus East, Griffith, Lowell, West Lafayette 21: Valparaiso 20: Indianapolis Scecina, Linton-Stockton, South Bend St. Joseph's 19: Evansville Memorial, North Judson, Zionsville 18: Castle, Goshen, Hamilton Southeastern, Merrillville, South Putnam 17: Fountain Central, Mishawaka Marian 16: Concord, Rensselaer Central 15: Eastbrook, Eastern Hancock, New Palestine, Perry Central, Tipton 14: Fort Wayne Wayne, Harding (Fort Wayne) (closed), Pioneer, Southridge, Southwood, Tell City, Western Boone 13: Mishawaka, Portage 12: Avon, Brownsburg, Brownstown Central, Hagerstown, Harrison (West Lafayette), Indianapolis Washington, Lewis Cass, Norwell, Westfield 11: Blackford, Delta, Lawrence Central, Seeger, Speedway 10: Carroll (Flora), Danville, DeKalb, Greenwood, Hamilton Heights, Plymouth, Whiteland Click here for more information and to see which teams had nine or less points
