IFCA and AP All-State Teams?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any insight as to when we can expect these teams to be released?  Seems like AP usually has been released around Thanksgiving.

I thought the AP one was Nov. 30th last year...seems it's a tad late?

I see several articles from the AP that say

McLaurin, Purichia top Indiana all-state teams

But can't find the actual list yet.

Not a single mention of any Winamac players. SMH. Tyler Katschke was a top 5 player in 1A.

Am I missing something. I don't see any players from either Andrean or Brebeuf on the 3A team.

Not even Honorable Mention?

I also thought that was odd for 3A. So was the omission of David Morrison from FW Concordia, or any of the Concordia seniors from the HM list.

Congrats to Quentin Brown (P) and Tyler Reed (DL) of Indy Lutheran for their selection in 1A. Also to Levy (QB) and Rollins (WR) of Trinity Lutheran.

Great list of players in all classes!

Is there going to be a top 50 players list? That may explain a few omissions.

Their coaches have to nominate them. If the coach did not submit their names then that would explain it. Both teams had very deserving players of course.

I guessed that...but found it tough to believe that both teams would have made that error.

Unfortunate. Does the Coaches' Poll work the same way?

I might be off but I only see 11 different teams listed on the 3A first team. And only 3 or 4 additionals in the HM category. Seems like 3/4 of 3A was not part of this process.

On the AP over the last few years it seemed like almost a third (possibly more) of the players came from the 2 State Championship teams (BTW - not saying that is as it should be BUT that is usually how it turns out). The omission jumped out at me immediately.

Doesn't a single AP member typically head up the process for each class? If so, it would be interesting to see just what might have occurred. Stunning to me that both teams would have failed to submit players (or possibly as many as 3/4 of the 3A teams - which would be more than stunning).

Also shows little effort to rectify a missing submission from the guy in charge. Lazy work.

Top 50 list is IFCA this is AP which is strictly media vote throughout the state

Really surprised to see Columbus East's Dwenger make 4A first team all state LB. Don't see too many sophomores making it. Kid has the work ethic and toughness to be very special in the next two years.

Junior Markell Jones from East was a given at RB. Next year he may have to play all 4Q in more than 1 game. If so, 3,000+ yds is not out of the question and may be the only way for the O's to make a deep tourney run in 2014.

Congrats to Cowan(QB) and Kuhn(OL) making the team too for the O's. Would like to have seen Patterson or Bateman on DL. They dominated the line of scrimmage against every team they played against except Bishop Dwenger.

Yet another probably dozen reasons no one puts any weight in AP All-State.

No Andrean? In the handful of times I saw them on film and in person they had at least 4 (and that is being very conservative I think) members that are All-State Caliber. Even if the coach didn't nominate them, any self respecting reporter knows that the state title team should probably get at least one mention. Heres an easy one... DeSomer - QB, you don't even have to try.

Look at 2A. Yet again, a nearly winless Eastern squad has 4 listed honorable mentions. One player only was in pads for less than half the season. I think their nominations are like when I take a scantron... just color in all the available boxes. Something good has to happen.

I'd like to continue picking it apart, but it just makes me laugh every year when this AP list comes out. Congratulations to the kids who made it, never will knock a kid for getting his name in the paper.

However the AP needs to see that this system is broken. How hard would it be to send a ballot to each of the AP member institutions Sports Depts and ask for write ins from their regions, or have them send in each of their all-area teams and then whittle it down from there. The good news is that the IFCA won't have the issue of allowing coaches to nominate and get the entire roster on a winless squad placed, or a state title team to be "forgotten".

I have always considered the AP the opportunity for State Finalists/Semistate teams to pick up some extra "All-State" designations for kids that they probably wouldn't get otherwise. That's fine by me....it is what it is. But the idea that somehow no one realized (or recognized.....or even cared) that the 2 State Finalist teams in 3A either weren't submitted or lost (or whatever) is pretty unforgivable and about as stark an indictment of the AP that I have ever seen. SOMEONE voting should have noticed this. Heck, people were bandying about DeSomer as a potential Mr. Football (I have to think there were some AP voters in the Region that should have noticed). No doubt he will get recognized in the Coaches' Poll.....but still.

Bear in mind, I have no dog in the 3A hunt. But it is a class I very much follow.

And people wonder why I think the AP Poll is as useful as reading animal entrails.....

Markell would have had 4,000 yards had he played every game all game. He played 1 game all year that he actually got to finish that game and that was the State Title game.

2 games this year he only played the 1st quarter, 6-7 games he only played a half. And he only played 3 quarters in 2 games. Lol
