Tesla (or the Elon Musk) thread

(CNN)Tesla cut the price of its most affordable car, the Model 3, by $1,100 making the new starting price $42,900.

That's still a long way from the $35,000 price tag that Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised when the Model 3 was first unveiled in 2016. Still, Musk boasted on Twitter Wednesday that the luxury sedan really does now cost $35,000 after factoring in incentives and all the money drivers will save on fuel.
Reminded by a Twitter user about that promised purchase price, Musk replied: "We're doing everything we can to get there. It's a super hard grind."
This is the second time Tesla (TSLA) has cut prices in recent weeks. At the beginning of the year, Tesla announced a price cut of $2,000 on all its models to help offset the partial loss of federal income tax credits for Tesla's electric vehicles. The tax break started phasing out this year for Teslas after the car maker hit the 200,000 vehicle limit for eligibility late last year. The credit, which phases out in steps, was reduced by half -- from $7,500 to $3,750 -- beginning January 1. It will drop by half again in July.

Tesla recently announced job cuts as it worked to save money amid product price cuts.
This latest price drop comes after Tesla ended its customer referral program on February 2. Under that program, Tesla owners could earn prizes by referring new customers to the brand. Depending on the number of people referred, prizes included cash, racing a Tesla Semi on a test track, driving a Boring Company tunnel digging machine or discounts on a new Tesla Roadster.
Musk has said recently that he expects to be able to produce the Model 3 for $35,000 in the next few months. In the meantime, the company is also coming closer to unveiling its next new product, the Model Y crossover, which will be based on the Model 3's engineering.

Price drops along with added incentives aren't working.....

According to officials, the officer was pursuing a vehicle headed down to the South Bay when the car began to run low on battery power.

“Just slowed down to six miles of battery on the Tesla, so I may lose it here in a sec,” the officer said, according to police radio transmissions. “If someone else is able, can they maneuver into the number one spot?”

Other units took over the pursuit. Police said the chase was called off when it became unsafe, and the suspect vehicle was later found abandoned in San Jose.

“The Tesla wasn’t fully charged at the beginning of the shift,” a Fremont police spokesperson said. “This unfortunately happens from time to time even in our vehicles that run on gas, if they aren’t re-fueled at the end of a shift.”

The Tesla, a used 2014 Model S manufactured at the plant in Fremont, began patrolling the streets earlier this year, as part of a pilot program to help reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions.

In other words, an ignorant cop fails to use a powerful tool properly.

Watch Teslas drive around parking lots with no one inside them: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2019/09/watch-teslas-drive-around-parking-lots-with-no-one-inside-them/

Tesla's long-awaited and long-delayed "Smart Summon" feature is finally being released to the general public, the company announced on Thursday.

"Customers who have purchased Full Self-Driving Capability or Enhanced Autopilot can enable their car to navigate a parking lot and come to them or their destination of choice, as long as their car is within their line of sight," Tesla said in the blog post announcing Version 10 of Tesla's software.

"Customers who have had early access to Smart Summon have told us that it adds both convenience to their trips and provides them with a unique moment of delight," Tesla writes.

For safety reasons, customers must continuously monitor the vehicle—holding down a button in the Tesla app—as it moves through a parking lot. Tesla urges customers to maintain a line of sight to the vehicle at all times.

Tesla only started pushing out the official Version 10 release within the last 24 hours, but pre-release versions have been available to members of Tesla's testing program, the Early Access Program, for several weeks. Videos can give us some idea of how these features work—though hopefully the final version will work a bit better, with fewer bugs.

....

The technology is designed for use in private parking lots. Ars asked both Tesla and federal regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration whether it's legal to use the technology on public roads, and we'll update this story if we get a response.

It's unclear who would be liable if a car caused damage while operating in Smart Summon mode. Tesla has designed the app only to work when the user holds down a button, monitoring the car's progress. That could help the company argue it shouldn't be liable in case of a malfunction. But there's no guarantee that the courts would buy such an argument.

So much that could go wrong with this.  Walking is bad:

Tesla with Autopilot hits cop car—driver admits he was watching a movie: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2020/08/movie-watching-tesla-driver-charged-after-autopilot-hits-cop-car/

Quote

Police in North Carolina have filed charges against a driver whose Tesla crashed into a police car early Wednesday morning, Raleigh's CBS 17 television reports. The driver admitted to officers that he had activated the Autopilot technology on his Model S and was watching a movie on his phone at the time of the crash.

"A Nash County deputy and a trooper with the Highway Patrol were on the side of the road while responding to a previous crash when the Tesla slammed into the deputy’s cruiser," CBS 17 reports. "The impact sent the deputy’s cruiser into the trooper’s vehicle—which pushed the trooper and deputy to the ground."

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured by the crash.

The driver was charged with a violation of the state's "move over" law and with having a television in the car.

It's an important reminder that no car on the market today is fully self-driving. Drivers need to pay attention to the road at all times, regardless of what kind of car they have or what kind of driver-assistance technology their car has.
