The next reclassification

I agree. 5A could include Cathedral, New Pal, Roncalli, Lafayette Jeff (who will be loaded), and East Central depending on how this year’s state tournament plays out.

If Jeff moves down to 5A, I think they could see a deep tourney run given how they look.  Took Carmel until 4Q last year to finally shake Jeff.  Should get a good idea of their strength this season in the first game when they square of with cross-river foe West Lafayette.  Two years of 6A under their belt and another good incoming class of players could make them a surprise player in 5A if they are reclassified there next time around.

During the 15-16 and 16-17 alignment, South Bend Washington’s boys basketball team elected to play up in 4A, while their girls basketball team stayed in 3A.  Their boys basketball team was never bumped up to 4A, so they never “earned it.”  I could be wrong, but I don’t think there is any prerequisite for a school to elect to play up.

Didn't Mishawaka Marian petition up from 1A to 2A back in the day before Success Factor?

Yes, in the VERY EARLY years of the tournament (mid 70's)

Scecina did as well in the 90's

I thought Scecina moved up due to enrollment, won a couple back-to-back 2A titles and then, when their enrollment dropped, petitioned to stay in 2A before moving back down to 1A.  They then became one of the first teams, possibly the only, to be subject to Success Factor without getting a blue ring.  Then their enrollment moved up again and they ended up staying in 2A based on enrollment.
