Sectional 28 Thread

Thoughts on this one?  Lot of good teams in this sectional.  I know Chatard is being labeled the favorite, but Guerin took them to OT, and Tippecanoe Valley/Hamilton Heights both undefeated and look very tough.

Four undefeated teams and Guerin at 6-2.  Maconaquah sits at 6-2 also.

I would question the schedule of Peru, and possibly Tippy Valley, but TVs big win over West Lafayette would surely grab attention.  Chatard is Chatard, so no need to go further.  Guerin is battle tested, as is Hamilton Heights in the Hoosier Conference.  Let's see how HH comes out against West Lafayette tomorrow to use as a comparison.

My thoughts would be the winner of this sectional would definitely be considered the favorite to win the 3A title, with Hanover Central a possible dark horse.

I posted this in another thread but it is probably more appropriate for this thread.

Just a quick comparison of the teams in Sectional 28 based on highest ranked opponent (according to Calpreps) that they have beaten:

Guerin: #1843 Brebeuf 34-29

Peru: #4495 Rochester 34-23

Tippecanoe: #2282 West Lafayette 35-13

Hamilton Heights: #3740 Lafayette Central Catholic 15-0

Oak Hill: #6594 Eastern 34-19

Maconaquah: #7806 Cass 43-26

Northwestern: #9535 Tipton 43-27

BCHS: #192 Cathedral 24-21

Great records are sometimes built on a foundation of sticks. I think the strength of this Sectional is misleading. Peru could beat Guerin. Northwestern could pull the upset over Maconaquah. Oak Hill might have a chance against Hamilton Heights (not very likely) but I think you could drop in any other 3A team in the Top 10 (excluding Knox. They would fit right in) and they still walk away with this Sectional.

Up until last night’s 34-7 win over Cincinnati Elder, I thought this was just another good, solid Chatard team….but now I’m uncertain.  In the years Ive watched that pairing neither team has so thoroughly dominated the other….and Chatard is doing it with their #2 QB and RB not to mention any other injuries they may have.

Elder has 4 losses now but only their losses to Chatard and a good Moeller team have been by more than 4 points.  They were 6 seconds away from beating St. Edwards (who some will remember beat Center Grove by 17 earlier this year) until they lost by 1 and they have also beat both Cincy and Louisville St. X this year.

Everyone wants to point to the win vs. Cathedral but this thoroughgoing drubbing of Elder is much, much more significant and telling in my mind.  In perspective, it seems to make the Cathedral win almost feel like it was closer than it should have been.

On another note, until Sagarin incorporates out of state games in their analysis, I just can’t reasonably point to it as indicative of anything anymore.  There have been waaay to many significant games played by Indiana teams against high quality out of state teams  that not only aren’t measured by Sagarin but actually seem to lower teams in his ranking by even playing those games.  I think Chatard actually dropped again in Sagarin after it’s blowout of Elder.

Anyhoo, I don’t generally get overly excited about teams (and I’ve seen Evansville Memorial sometimes easily take Chatard’s lunch money in the past) but I’m beginning to wonder if this team isn’t along the lines of the 2019 and 2020 teams…which I considered very good.

That said, anything can happen in playoffs.

Agree. All these teams are mediocre and none of them will make it out of Regionals.

That's an impressive W.

SECTIONAL 28 [BRACKET]
Guerin Catholic [7-2] at Peru [9-0]
Tippecanoe Valley [9-0] at Indianapolis Chatard [9-0]
Northwestern [3-6] at Maconaquah [6-3]
Hamilton Heights [9-0] at Oak Hill [5-4]

I'll take GC by 24, Chatard by 42, Mac by 21, HH by 30

That's a bold assessment. I'm not saying it's wrong, but I'm not saying it's incorrect either. I'm gonna say the games mentioned will be closer than they appear. This is the Sectional of death by the way. Enjoy what we can and predict what we think we can. Enjoy life either way.

You weren't too far off on your predictions. My apologies for my previous post. 👍 After watching any tape I could find on the teams, I figured these games had the makings of being relatively close.

I hope that we get good breakdowns of each game from tonight from those that were at the games or watched them on a streaming service/TV.

TV has some big kids and a few kids with speed. They played tough in the first quarter. The inability to pass (Int on their first real throw) and a fumble the only time they crossed the fifty (until late in the fourth against the BCHS back up defense) looked like it sapped their emotion. It seemed like the Chatard coaches made some defensive adjustments and I’m not sure if TV had 100 yards of offense until late in the fourth quarter (when the score was already 40-0). Their best RB was apparently in a boot for most of the week and I am sure that had an effect on their performance.

On the other side of the ball, Chatard's starting QB was back after a 5 week absence and had to knock some rust off in the first quarter. After he settled down he threw two beautiful touchdown passes. The defense (the strength of this team) got stingy and the offensive line began to wear down the TV defense. They mixed throws and runs very effectively and a team will have to defend sideline to sideline against them as well as vertically.

As I have said many times, it will take a very good offensive team to drive a ball the length of the field against this defense. They might give up a big play or two at some point but that will not be the norm. Offensively they have been pretty safe with the ball and haven’t self destructed (like the did against GC last year in the regular season).

Look for next week to be BCHS 28-GC 0. Chatard will be entering the game healthy and their #1 RB may actually play (he has been out 6 weeks). Tonight their RB off the future, a freshman, carried the load on the last drive and scored his first varsity TD. This team is deep.

Unless we're looking for this thread to go down the road of comparing our feelings about our rings, (I'm pretty fond of mine btw) what makes the outcome of Chatard and Guerin different this time around?  Chatard may be healthier, but beating a rival multiple times in a year is very, very tough.  For those of you who have forgotten, when Chatard, Roncalli, and Cathedral shared a sectional, the regular season victor rarely repeated in the playoffs.

Last years regular season score was 31-30 Chatard and Guerin missed on a 2 pt conversion at the end of the game. The score of their playoff game was 49-13. I don’t think it will be as lopsided this year but I also don’t think Guerin scores more than 10 points this time. I would put my money on a healthy BCHS scoring more than 10. A healthy Chatard scores at least 28.

Unless it was between '73 and '93, Chatard has never played Cathedral in a sectional game.
