3A South Semi-State Gibson Southern (11-2) at Heritage Hills (12-1)

Recommended Posts

Gibson Southern 11-2 at Heritage Hills 12-1

3A South Semi-State

This is the 50th meeting between Heritage Hills and Gibson Southern and the Patriots lead the series 33-17.  The Patriots also faced the three teams that consolidated into Gibson Southern in the 1972 and 1973 seasons and went 0-2 VS. Jack Jewell's Fort Branch Twigs, 1-1 VS. Haubstadt, and 2-0 VS. Owensville.

In the first season of Patriot football, the Patriots went 9-1 and their only loss was a 15-12 defeat by Jewell-coached Fort Branch Twigs. The Jack Jewell lead Titans won the first 3 meetings in the series beating Roger Snow’s Patriots in 1974, 75, and 76, the Patriots didn’t beat them for the first time until 1977, the same year Bob Ashworth became the Patriot's head coach. That same season was also Hall of Famer Bob Clayton's only season as Offensive Coordinator at Heritage Hills the following season Ashworth moved on to Evansville Reitz and Clayton took over the Heritage Hills program.

The Titans have won 13 of the last 19 meetings starting with a Coach Rick Stefanich win in 2010 that snapped the Patriots streak of 21 straight wins over the Titans. Heritage Hills and Gibson Southern have played 5 overtime games in the series including a 7-0 five overtime affair in 1982.   In the Coach Nick Hart and Coach Todd Wilkerson era, Nick Hart's Titans lead the series 12-5.

This is the Titan's 5th Semi-State, all under Nick Hart.
I believe this is the 11th Semi-State for Heritage Hills.

Barring a complete overhaul of tournament structure….we will never be treated to this rivalry game in a bigger moment/atmosphere.

A game of ultimate bragging rights.  A semi state game actually played under the lights on Friday.  Playing in November….It really doesn’t get much bigger than this for this rivalry.

How do two teams from same conference in lower classes play in semi state?

Lots of factors

Chatard is now north 3A

Memorial is playing up in 4A

Bosse is 4A and Mater Dei hasn’t moved up from 2A

It looks like they drew a line from Mt Vernon to Owen valley…and then Owen Valley to West Vigo…everything north and west of that was a different sectional

IHSAA can't read a map? It is what it is, but it will be a game that might get a guy like me from Evansville to drive to Lincoln City in November to see who gets a crack at Chatard at LOS.

It didn’t happen but would have been cool, in 1988 & 1989 Tri-West and Western Boone almost met in State Finals.  The school districts border each other and many friends & family would have been divided on that day.  It didn’t happen TW lost to South Spencer in the ultimate mud bowl in 1988.  Webo lost to FW Luers in 1989.  What could have been didn’t happen.

South Spencer.....many don't know they played at that level consistently every year.  They were one of the "Big 4" in the PAC back in those days.

There isn't an excellent way to break up the 3A South—many clusters with a few outliers. The only thing that will change up the sectionals will be the schools' enrollment numbers. Memorial and Mater-Dei filtered by throwing a wrench into everything, but they stay put. If Bosse drops, it could complicate things. However, it all depends on the fluctuation of 4A & 5A.

A seeded tournament might well have produced a similar result. By my count, GS has beaten 2 non-conference teams with winning records and HH has beaten 3.  I have no problem with both teams winning their way to the state semifinals.

And 3A south has been a study in shifting demographics. Sullivan, Crawford County, Brownstown Central have all dropped to 2A.  Owen Valley, South Dearborn, and Madison have all dropped from 4A to 3A.  Southridge now seems to be solidly 3A by enrollment after getting the SF bump.

Not if you go by the "effective enrollment" so eloquently coined by our friend 32! And technically...we are still up by SF standards from our sectional championships in 2020 & 2022

Back to the game at hand on Friday ...everyone relatively healthy?? Any big factors to note going into the game??

I’m glad someone read my ramblings.  I have managed to tick off all my P&P buddies this year lol.  We are healthy enough to not have any excuses.

“Tick off all my P&P buddies”….I’m just keeping a low profile.

To be clear, I think the IHSAA as regards how they organize the tournament and absolutely refuse to at least internally seed Sectionals are a bunch of intellectually low grade Jackwads (think I made up a new and descriptive…and, yet, uncensorable noun….if that’s a “word” at all) yet have somehow ended up with the South Semi-State that seems to perfectly reflect the actual end result of a “seeded” South.

As 32 said, we too are healthy enough that we have no excuse.  Calling for rain Friday....are we in for a mud bowl?

to remember the Kickapoos and Twigs... Haubstaut, Cynthiana and Griffin (my Mom's alma mater! Altho I think that's North Posey turf.... amazing that 3 PAC schools are involved in Semi-States...
