23-24 DOE Enrollments

Recommended Posts

The DOE has released enrollment data from the fall count day for the 23-24 school year.  Here are the enrollments for each school for grades 9-12.  I made a tentative split for each class just to give an idea where they could be.  Note that there always seems to be a few schools that have slightly different numbers when the IHSAA releases their enrollments for classification.

Two schools in particular really stood out as having enrollments that were significantly lower than their 2022-23 enrollments - Rochester and Mitchell.  I think there may have been some kind of reporting error.  For now, I left them in the classroom they would have been in based upon previous enrollments, but I did list the enrollment that was listed by the DOE.

Schools with an * did not report their data to the DOE, so their enrollments are listed as the same as the number they gave the IHSAA in 2022.  I included Indianapolis Irvington, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian, Greenwood Christian, and Lafayette Faith Christian since they have moved to 11 man football or plan to do so, and they are tournament eligible schools.  I also moved the schools who earned enough success factor points in the current cycle to be in a higher class.

I forgot to remove South Bend Clay.  That school will close at the end of this year.  The cut line for the 1A, 2A, and 3A could move depending upon which schools who are new to 11 man football play in the tournament and closures like South Bend Clay which takes away a current football school.

Map of possible 2A sectionals, if the preliminary list from above holds.  Provides more of a northwest/southeast semi-state than a true north/south semi-state.

The proposed sectional in Indianapolis would consist of: Park Tudor, Covenant Christian, Heritage Christian, Cardinal Ritter, Scecina Memorial, Lutheran and Chistel House Manual.  I assume gerrymandering in LCC and Andrean in exchange for Manual will be considered.

Tough break for Harrison.  Getting bumped to 6A and no longer has a conference.  Meanwhile Jeff ends up down in 5A.

Jeff and Warsaw in 5A North makes the top half of the bracket ultra interesting. With Valpo, Merrillville, and Mishawaka already there, 5A North will be battle tested and ready to defend North's two year win streak against the likes of Decatur Central or East Central.

Looks like Luers and Adams Central would have moved up despite SF.

Yes, I'd been stating that this past season. Feel more rural Bellmont kids are going to AC now based on certain factors of new Decatur residents. Surprisingly SA is higher on the top of 1A than I expected. Glad all 3 County schools are in separate classes, but the timing doesn't work out. Bellmont is in a deep funk and AC's best class is graduating. They should compete in 2A but should take a small step back compared to the past 3 seasons. South Adams should compete in 1A but aren't quite what they had been in prior seasons. Be nice if they stay separated and have really good seasons at the same time. Similar to wrestling currently and 2 of the 3 in basketball right now.

Is Mishawaka staying in 5A? In what was shared above, they are showing Mishawka as the 4th largest school in 4A?

You are missing FW Northrop in 6A. There are 4 Fort Wayne area schools that will be in 6A with Carroll, Homestead, Northrop and Snider.

I would put Northrop in that "black" sectional with Homestead, HSE, and Fishers and then move Noblesville to your "green" sectional that only has 3 teams on your map (Carmel, Westfield, and Zionsville)

My error, Mishawaka is 4A. They should should challenge Northwood for supremacy up north.

I dunno - they have selected/requested to be in 5A for YEARS at this point. I'm not sure why they would want to drop to 4A now, but also, when they made the decision in the past, Merrillville, Valpariaso, and Warsaw were all in 6A the majority of that time. Now with those schools in 5A north, I think you might be right, they may look to go into 4A finally.

If Mishawaka stay in 5A... Sectionals likely look like this

Sectional 9: Hammond Central, Hammond Morton, Merrillville, Munster

Sectional 10: Chesterton, LaPorte, Michigan City, Valparaiso

Sectional 11: SB Adams, Concord, Goshen, Mishawka

Sectional 12: Kokomo, Lafayette Jefferson, McCutcheon, Warsaw

5A south could go a number of different ways, but more liekly than not would be some combinantion of these groupings, but the below PAIRS would definitely be stuck together. There are a number of ways you could piece these sectionals together.

Anderson and East Central

Decatur Central and Plainfield

Terre Haute North and South

Bloomington North and South

Evansville North and Castle

Floyd Central and New Albany

Columbus East and Seymour

Whiteland and Franklin

However, if Mishawaka goes ahead and drops to 4A, you would just move Warsaw into their spot, and FW North Side would move up to 5A and into Warsaw's spot. Or you could interchange Warsaw and FW North Side I suppose.

Sectional 9: Hammond Central, Hammond Morton, Merrillville, Munster

Sectional 10: Chesterton, LaPorte, Michigan City, Valparaiso

Sectional 11: SB Adams, Concord, Goshen, Warsaw

Sectional 12: Kokomo, Lafayette Jefferson, McCutcheon, FW North Side

The following makes sense to me geographically:

Sectional 1: Penn, Crown Point, Portage, Lake Central

Sectional 2: Carroll, Snider, Northrop, Elkhart

Sectional 3: Westfield, Noblesville, Harrison, Homestead

Sectional 4: Zionsville, Carmel, Fishers, HSE

I am betting they send Harrison to Sectional 1. I feel like there is precedent with sending Lafayette schools to "The Region". If that's the case, I'd see something like this

Sectional 1: Crown Point, Harrison, Lake Central, Portage

Sectional 2: Carroll, Elkhart, Penn, Snider (wow!)

Sectional 3: Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern, Homestead, Northrop

Sectional 4: Carmel, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville

A Snider/Penn matchup wouldn't hurt my feelings. Old rivalry renewed.

This is what I’m thinking. As far as the South in 6A goes…should stay the same as these past 2 seasons.

Brownsburg, Avon, Pike, BD

North Central, LN, LC, Cathedral

Warren, Tech, Southport, Perry Meridian

Franklin Central, CG, Columbus North, Jeffersonville

Warren Central got bonked hard from being the 3rd largest to 8th largest. Never thought I would see the day or year

Looks like they lost 400+ students since the last count?  That’s pretty significant.
