  1. This must be in Slut Holler, WV (that's my neck of the woods, I can make fun of it if I want)

  2. many of you may already know, but Indiana led by Commish Faulkens instituted a pilot program utilizing the 40 sec play clock on 3 year pilot program. I believe at least 7 other states eventually joined. NFHS has officially adopted the 40 sec clock nation wide as the standard. REJOICE!!! Other notable NFHS rule changes: State associations can choose to utilize Instant Replay in state championship games also notable: Horse Collar has been adjusted to include the name plate area : I know we got called last year for it when our player grabbed the top of the number and pulled down. ugh. http://www.nfhs.org/articles/40-second-play-clock-postseason-instant-replay-among-football-changes/?utm_campaign=coschedule&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=NFHS_Org

  4. I have no idea ... but I hope what they are addressing (although I doubt it) is the single most-violated rule in the book: the requirement that all players be either in the backfield or on the line of scrimmage. I would say 90% of the teams that use 1 or 2 wingbacks in their formations have players lining up who are neither on the line nor in the backfield. By rule, that’s a foul for illegal formation ... or, at least it was before this rule change. They’re ineligible by rule, so if they go downfield on a pass it’s a foul. If they touch a forward pass it’s a foul. Never seen it called.

  5. In reading comments made by officials from other states, I’m amazed how many states have literally no schools that utilize visible play clocks. We take that for granted in Indiana. Can’t remember the last time I was at a game with no field play clock ... once Bill Sharpe left Jimtown. 😎

  8. I agree completely. We don't have a single source for interpretation here to provide that consistency other than "what does the book say?" It's tough to do that at a statewide high school level so that is not a knock on the IHSAA. Some states are just more structured than others. Unless we have a commissioner focused on officiating only it's very difficult to get to that level of involvement with rules and interpretations.

  9. You will not be disappointed in his attitude. It is incredibly contagious on the sideline. I taught with Coach Lowery for a couple years at Paoli. He brings an energy to the school and the field that will be awesome for the students and athletes. Sad to see him leave Paoli, but it is a great hire!

  10. With the outcry from some of my fellow officials in other states having to switch to the 40-second play clock ("it's a solution looking for a problem") I'm thinking several Indiana people could become consultants on how to do this! They have all the same concerns we did here. "We have volunteer clock operators who won't figure this out" (I think it's actually easier). "Our chain crew guys are slow and won't get there in time" (It's really not that much different in pace if you were doing it right already which they all claimed they were). "We have horrible ball boys" (to be fair some states don't allow you to change balls for any reason during a drive so they are chasing down those long incomplete passes for the next play...that's an easy change to ball mechanics). "The offense will be able to go so much faster" (they will still only go as fast as the ball and the officials are ready which is still about the same time; the advantage is on the back end with the end of the play clock being consistent). "The umpire is going to get run over because he's slow" (very rarely is a team ready to go immediately after the umpire steps back). I'm glad to see it passed too!

  11. I could give you a list of programs if you'd like....the worst is the italicized "NASCAR" style numbers....even if its, ohhhhhh lets say white numbers on a black jersey. They are shortened from top to bottom and the font makes it impossible to differentiate some numbers on film or even from the sidelines.

  12. If everyone is so concerned about their children and grandchildren’s future, shouldn’t all of these old codgers step out of the way and let them decide their OWN future?

  13. I haven't seen final wording on that, but I believe the intent is to clarify what they mean with the 2-yard belt. There has always been some debate on whether the offensive player had to be engaged in a block to expand to the neutral zone and not be downfield. There are 3 statements in the rule. One mentions they are allowed to be 2 yards downfield and the other mentions they be 2 yards if they engage in the neutral zone and then go 2 yards. I believe they were going to try to clarify which one of those is the correct interpretation. If they go with the latter, RPO just got a lot harder to run because your blockers will have to engage with a defender at the LOS or stay at the LOS.

  14. I was in the ditch at: But facts is facts You totally lost me at: DT is right Why must every thread on this board turn into a contraction debate? If the local school board and community support having Football, why not? Are there schools out there that should probably call it a day, absolutely. Is it my place as a taxpayer and community member of Seymour tell Linton what they should be doing with their Football program? Bigger point, you mention yourself open enrollment, this is bigger than sports, school systems today need to have butts in desks to make it financially. How does cutting out sports programs further that cause? Furthermore, in rural communities if they opt to drop Football, because kids can just transfer to another competitive school, how long before rural schools lose enough where it puts their school in jeopardy? What about the local competitive school, how long before they're forced to expand, thus putting more pressure on the local tax base, no bother for the transfers, they have no skin in the game.

  15. Why are some on this forum so keen on giving "every kid who wants to play football" a chance to play, and the more schools that offer kids the opportunity to play, the better? Look, I get it. I get how Friday Night Lights can bring a community together especially in rural Indiana. It's a big event, a community gathering in all those places where there's nothing to do and nowhere to go. We've seen it happen at Eastern. But facts is facts. A lot of schools simply don't have the money, the resources and the numbers to field even a semi-competitive football program. With the IHSAA's "open enrollment" policy, any kid who wants to play football can simply transfer to a school that has a decent, established program in place. DT is right. A lot of programs need to fold their tents. As he said, just look at the bottom of the Sagarin ratings by class. Loaded with perennial bottom-feeders, moribund programs with little hope of resurrecting to even the level of mediocrity.

  16. No. No. No. And no. Did you think DT was referring to enrollment numbers as the cutoff line for contraction? I'm assuming, but you know what that sometimes means 😜 Exactly.

  17. On behalf of broadcasters and PA announcers everywhere, THANK YOU. I've been calling for this for years in all sports. Unfortunately, I'm sure there are a few coaches out there who will try to skirt this as much as they can to make it difficult to see them on film and order uniforms with, say, navy numbers on maroon with no outline (which are almost impossible to read), but at least this gets rid of the uniforms where the numbers are nothing more than a thin outline. It's very simple. If you have a dark uniform, use white (or gold/grey if they're in your color scheme) for your home numbers. For the white jerseys, use the darkest school color you have. Gold or grey on white remain almost impossible to see (but would probably fit within the rules) without a thick black outline.

  18. So Indy Lutheran is out? And Attica? And 2013 state champ Tri-Central? And 2018 runner-up North Vermillion? Phew ... good thing that 2018 state champ and three-time state champ, Pioneer, and seven-time state champ, LCC, have those extra 8 and 7 kids, respectively, hanging around the halls to keep them from having to throw in the towel.
