  1. Besides holiday Basketball Tournaments and maybe a holiday wrestling tourney I have not seen a school sponsored sport where a family would have to book hotel for up to 4 days in another state, pay for entry into the tourney, consecions at the event, dinner and breakfast for before and after the event. I would say the time commitment to travel sports far out weighs the commitment for school sports.

  2. Winter sports can only meet and practice twice a week for two hours at a time during a six week time period during the fall, the same amount of time Football can do during the winter and and spring six week sessions.

  4. What bitterness? The fact that we want the kids to have a summer? The fact that travel ball has gotten out of hand and costs families far to much money and time. The fact that football gives out far more full rides to college than baseball or softball or basketball.

  6. So if a kid wants to be called Mike or Bob, stick to Michael or Robert no matter what? I had a student last year with a foreign name. His friends called him Steve though...have for years. So, go against that? Had another student who was a 3rd ( gpa was senior, dad was junior). The common name they had been called going back to gpa was Bob. That name is not on the record. If the students wants to go by Bob, and I refuse, it creates more problems than it is worth. I have had multiple transgender students the last few years; great kids as well, and solid students. It is no issue for me to call them by the name they want. Again, I am not willing to insert my personal beliefs where they do not belong. As far as this case goes, the teacher was even told by his association and the ISTA legal rep that he had no leg to stand on in this case.

  8. I have coached for a few years. I think it is very important for the kids to get away from the school and the coaches. Some conferences even have a dead week before the official IHSAA practice start date. I think that is a great idea. We do forget sometimes that some players even the great ones do not love football like their coaches. They need a break. I do feel the AAU/Travel teams seem to gotten out of hand. When coaches say to a player if you are not on a travel/AAU team then you are not on the school team is wrong. I do know that is happening in the state.

  9. Moratorium week is controlled by education-based IHSAA. Followed by IHSAA member schools. Agreed that the student-athletes need time away from school and coaches. AAU and Travel teams are out of hand. Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer all vying for similar athletes, especially at smaller schools. All three want athletes and ask for them in June. Talk about burnout. AAU/Travel ball coaches force the student-athletes to choose. IHSAA can not make choices for student-athletes, Moratorium or not. Bottom line: Student-athletes trying to please everyone puts them at risk. There are student-athletes now that pass on high school team in favor of AAU/Travel teams. As always, the game is better from_the_sidelines007
