  1. I would say no. I believe Elwood got the right man for the job in Brown. This season will undoubtedly have its growing pains but I think the arrow is pointing upward in the long term. Being an old fart and no longer living in town means I no longer have my finger on the pulse of the program but it seems like some semblance of order has been restored. Also, I really don't see anyone outside of maybe Blackford or Ole Miss leaving the CIC. I'd understand if Ole Miss and their increasing enrollment might have eyes for stronger competition. I can't imagine it's very fun to whip up on inferior schools with a fraction of your enrollment. Blackford is a bit of an oddball but it sounds like they have already entertained the idea of spurning the CIC in favor of playing paddy cake with random schools like Jay County (ew, why?). The traditionalist in me would be bummed to see either school leave the conference. I'm sure Lapel would be on speed dial if that really did happen. Shenandoah is intriguing as well from a size standpoint but some of those drives to Middletown would be kinda miserable. As far as pulling schools like Heights or Tipton into the fold...Not a chance. Those schools are positioned well both logistically and competitively. I see the Hoosier as sort of the gold standard of small school conferences. Zero reason to exit a comfy situation like that. I'd liken that to asking Kate Upton for a divorce so you could go to a singles mixer at the Elks lodge in Hartford City.

  2. Is anyone running an NFL fantasy football league this year? If someone puts it together and we get 8-12 players, the winner will receive a donation for Booster status on TGD which they may use or pass it on... Also braggin' rights in your profile. Anyone willing to organize? Is everyone using ESPN or NFL or another site nowadays?

  3. Gonna take some time at Greenfield Central. Both QBs and top WR transferred from the program in the last 9 months. Looks like their varsity has less than 50 players. But the new coach is going about it the right way. Both 7th and 8th grade teams were in the wishbone.

  6. Week 1 at Roy Williams Field. Southridge is 4-0 verse the Miners. Should be an interesting game to see where both teams are at to begin the year. Linton is returning a lot of starters this year with some familiar faces. I am not sure what to expect from the Raiders other than a quality football team. Good luck to all!

  7. Friday, Aug. 23 LaVille at Bremen - I'm glad to see this game back on the schedule. LaVille's improvement in the Hostrawser years has earned them the right to play this game again! And now that LaVille is 2A it's a good measurement for the Lions. I like LaVille's team this year. They should be in mid-season form right out of the gate. Bremen is going to take some time to gel with a sophomore QB and a lot of new faces. I'm taking the Lancers. LaVille 21-7 Cass at Pioneer - Another good Sectional 34 match-up in week one! I don't know much about Cass, but they were a pretty solid team last year as it turned out. I suspect they felt they should have given the Panthers a better game in last year's opener. They'll be on a mission Friday night. But ultimately Pioneer will have too many offensive weapons to try to keep in check. Von Tobel will be better than most expect at QB and the Panthers will reload on the line. The twins will run wild. Pioneer 30-17 North Judson at Culver - Ditmire is going to wear some defenses out this year! He's a Dawson Patrick type load coming through the line and he will punish average defenses. NJ lost too much from last year's team to hang with the Cavs. It's the Zack attack for the win. Look for him to pound out 250 on the ground against a young Jays defense! Culver 27-7 South Central at Triton - Triton had a couple of talented and hard working classes come through, and Coach Brown knew how to get the most out of them! (Good luck to Coach Brown at Elwood!) Those football players are gone and I'm not sure the remaining guys really understand how hard you have to work for success. I suspect they'll find out pretty quick! SCUM also lost their all-state (in baseball) QB, but they have some guys returning. I'm going with the Satellites in a close one. South Central 21-19 West Central at Caston - Don't know much about either team really, except I know the Caston kids have some heart! With only one senior on last year's squad, the Comets will return a lot. I'm pulling for them to get the W. Caston 19-13 Winamac at Knox - Can Winamac be good enough in the passing game to knock off some folks this year? I'm going to say yes. Their sophomore QB will get better as the year goes on. But I don't think they'll have the horses to hang around with a solid Knox team. Coach Hendryx has that program moving along and I don't see them taking a step backward this year. Knox by 3 scores. Knox 28-7

  8. I remember last year, the first play of the game vs Whiteland, I knew we were in trouble. They had scouted really well, and just smothered us. I truly believe that Gaddis doesn't make that mistake again, and will have the guys ready. On an additional note, I hope that it doesn't pour like it did vs Whiteland last year lol!

  10. LCC is looking very good this year. After their fall from grace after having 3 different coaches in 4 years, the kids seem to have a good grip on the offensive and defensive schemes. Lots of speed, more depth, and everyone looks a lot stronger. Freshman class reminds me of the seniors from the state championship team that graduated in 2010. It's gonna be a great day to be a knight this Friday in Lizton.

  21. Why does one team have to do the same thing as another? How far does that go? Team A passes 4 times, then Team B is expected to throw 4 times? Since Team A wants to play their 2nd team 10 plays, Team B is expected to? What if Team B doesn't want to? This gets into newspapers publishing scores of scrimmages and who scores---it has -0- relevance, down to how many yards rushing someone has. IO---keep up the good work. Someone needs to call people out.

  24. I will be at the game. I am a parent of a player. East usually starts slow and builds as players gel and learn their rolls. Still lots of players learning new roles and seeing significant minutes this year versus marginal minutes last year. Skill positions should be solid but line play on both sides of the ball will determines success. I personally was a bit concerned from the Martinsville scrimmage. I think Whiteland is big and runs a tough offense. Offensively we may struggle to run the ball early. I hope I am wrong. Three pretty tough games to start the season. 2-1 would be really good

  25. I agree, the amount approved is high but it is the kids that do not get approved because they came from schools that basically do not sign off on anybody. They may be few and far between, but they are there and I hate that they can keep a kid from playing a year of high school sports when a kid a town over can transfer w/o consequence.

  26. Unfortunately doesn't seem like there are many posters from the NLC this year. Each year has felt like there have been fewer. Not a lot of in depth analysis behind my picks for this week: Concord @ SB St Joe : going with the Indians here. This has been a nice week 1 matchup for these programs the last 4 seasons, and I have to give the nod to St Joe at home. Should be a good game. East Noble @ Plymouth : This should also be a good game. East Noble is always a strong program, but I'll take the Barron boys winning the opener at the Rock Pile. Elk Memorial @ Elk Central : final battle for the Mangy Lion. I expect Memorial to hang around and be competitive in a handful of games this year, but they've only won this rivalry once in the last seven years. With @NRRaider2001 hyping up Central's offense, I'm picking the Blue Blazers. Goshen @ Fairfield : I'm starting to sense a theme that will follow all throughout my picks this week. I am not high on the Redhawks whatsoever, and heard some good things about Fairfield's performance against Bremen in their Jamboree. The Lions handled Goshen, while the Falcons version of "Bart Ball" gave Bremen some trouble on defense. Considering what Warsaw did to Goshen last year running the same/similar style, I'll go with a bit of an upset and Fairfield at home. Could be an ugly game. Huntington North @ Warsaw : The Tigers open up with a new opponent for the first time since 1996. After 22 straight years of the US 30 battle between Warsaw and Columbia city (in which they sported an 18-4 record), I believe over time Huntington North should prove to be a step up in competition for the Tigers in week 1. However, I do not think that year will be this year. Coach Prescott did a great job turning around the Peru program from an 0-10 first season to an 8-3 record in his penultimate season and should be able to do the same thing in Huntington. Expectations are high in Warsaw after last season's introduction of "Bart Ball", and I believe the Tigers win their season opener at home. Jimtown @ NorthWood : I could be wrong here, but I believe the Jimmies are projected to have a better year than their last two .500 seasons, while NorthWood has a lot to reload for what has been arguably the strongest program in the NLC the last 4 years. However, NorthWood has won 6 straight in this rivalry, including 2 consecutive shutouts of Jimtown. I'll go with the home team again until proven otherwise. Lakeland @ Wawasee : this one I do not feel quite as confident in, but I don't think either of these teams will be very good this year. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if a repeat performance of last year's 21 point victory occurred in favor of the Lakers, but I'll take Wawasee at home to kickoff the Coach Reutebuch tenure. Northridge @ SB Adams : another toss up honestly. I think this should be a good game, but I'll go with the team that has a D1 commit at QB, which also ends up being the home team. Best of luck to all NLC teams this week and throughout the season (except those weeks you line up against my Tigers 😉 )

  27. I agree that this non-conference schedule will pay dividends. It just seems odd to think that Eastbrook could start the year out 1 and 3. I’ll be pulling for the Panthers to win all of their first four games, but that seems like a tall order. Good luck!

  29. Frankly, I'm not even sure if you are referring to Moore or Sharp. If it's referring to Brock Moore, the Indystar article noted that he transferred (I am not sure which school he previously attended) for academic reasons & then stayed behind 1 grade for academic reasons. Makes perfect sense if a student is struggling academically, dealing with his mother's serious illniess, etc. This change has obviously been very good for him both in the classroom & on the baseball field too. After the transfer, it appears that he was allowed to participate in athletics immediately. For IHSAA member schools, each student-athlete is eligible for 8 semesters of high school sports. Based upon the ruling of the IHSAA Review Committee, Moore had used up his 8 semesters of eligibility at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Please let me know if any of those facts are incorrect. As you suggested, I did some more research & found that the connections leading up to the Reese Sharp transfer is pretty darn interesting. Lots of facts below. Chris Estep has been the Head Baseball Coach at University HS for 11 years. Estep is not a teacher, he is the founder (1993) & owner of the Roundtripper Sports Academy in Westfield. According to his bio on the Roundtripper website, "Chris is currently the Head of Player Training and Development for the Indiana Mustangs baseball organization, while also serving as a coach." Also from that same website, "RoundTripper Sports Academy is home to several local sports teams in Westfield, IN. These teams include the Indiana Mustangs organization, the University High School baseball and softball teams, the Colts Baseball Club, the San Francisco Giants Scout Team, and PBR’s Team Indiana." Roundtripper's facilities include a 40,000 sq ft indoor facility, youth baseball & softball fields & a regulation high school baseball field. The University baseball team practices & plays its home games at Roundtripper. (Opinion here-- I bet that no other 1A baseball program enjoys those kinds of facilities...in fact, maybe no other team in the entire state.) All Mustang players are provided with a Roundtripper Academy membership that includes unlimited cage use, mound use, and indoor field use. Mustangs players will also have access to some of the finest baseball instructors in the midwest. Reese Sharp has been a member of the Indiana Mustangs Elite Travel baseball club for at least 7 years. I found this May 2016 article when Sharp was a varsity pitcher for Noblesville HS as a freshman: https://millermedianow.org/3123/sports/pitching-the-way-to-varsity/ From that article, "In Sharp’s seven years of playing baseball, a moment that has stuck with him took place during a travel game for the Indiana Mustangs, the only other team Sharp has played for besides Noblesville." https://www.mustangsnation.com/alumni - Sharp is listed as a Mustangs alumni who has committed to play at IU. From MaxPreps, here are Sharp's stats during his 3 years playing varsity at Noblesville. (Hmmm...only 14 innings on the mound as a Junior) https://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/reese-sharp/_VjrL0AiEeW-8KA2nzwbTA/gendersport/baseball-stats.htm Lots & lots of facts there. Unfortunately, I can't confirm that as a fact but, at the state title game, I overheard a University parent say that Sharp had a falling out with the Noblesville Coach. So, based upon those facts & a bit of spy-work, my conclusion is this-- after the 2018 season, Reese Sharp wasn't happy in his role at Noblesville. Based upon many years of training at Estep's Roundtripper Academy & playing elite travel ball for Estep's Indiana Mustangs, Sharp already had a good relationship with Chris Estep which eventually led to a discussion about transferring to University for his Senior year. With a solid squad returning after being 1A runner-ups in 2018, it was a great fit for both the student-athlete & the baseball program. Obviously, it would have worked out even better if Noblesville had signed off on the transfer or the IHSAA gave their approval so that he could have played the whole season. But he was still able to practice every day at Estep's first-class facility until the 365-day ineligibility ended plus he had already committed to play at IU. Based on being drafted in the 28th round, professional scouts surely stopped by to watch him workout too. After University clobbered each Sectional opponent, he became eligible to play starting with the Regionals-- Sharp started on the mound in all 4 of their remaining tournament games, he was the winning pitcher in 3 games, threw 21 2/3 innings (out of 28) & allowed just 2 runs total. As you correctly pointed out, there are personal & family issues which I am completely unaware of. In your first post, you mentioned gun violence. Are you referring to the May 2018 shooting at the Noblesville Middle School? Assuming those personal & family issues were pertinent to their athletic eligibility review, the student's family & legal counsel certainly submitted that information on their transfer application & to the IHSAA Review Committee. In both cases, the Committee ruled against the transfer applicants-- because facts often outweigh feelings.

  30. While I am not much of a fan of the Pitch Count Rule, it's clearly here to stay. Not sure if the IHSAA even has a say in this or if this is being mandated by the National Federation. As for your comment about the tournament & specifically about playing 2 Regional games in 1 day, teams used to play 2 games on a Saturday to win Sectional, 2 Regional games the following Saturday, 2 Semi-State games the following Saturday & 2 games at the State Finals back in the old single-class days. Even if you had an unhittable Ace with a bionic arm who could throw 10 innings for you each week, you needed a good #2 to fill up the rest of those innings every week. These days, you may not even need a #2 beyond the Regional. And depending on your draw & when you play, some lucky teams can get through the Sectional using their Ace almost exclusively.

  31. The pitch count rule does not make sense. It adversely affect small schools, whose student enrollment is much smaller and probably doesn't have as much depth at the pitching position. The IHSAA has acknowledged that it cannot control travel baseball or Legion Ball, so instead it is tightening it's grip on it's member schools. This is not how the game should be played. Furthermore, the playoff system is a bit of a joke. First, you have sectionals fall over a holiday weekend. This takes family time away and many schools graduate at that time so you might not be able to go to your friend or family member's graduation or graduation party. Second regionals should not be a double header. Play Friday and Saturday, forcing coaches to be more strategic with their coaching decisions (or Wednesday/Thursday and Saturday). If you want to see the best pitchers and best players, you need to adjust your playoff system as you change your rules. Just one man's opinion.

  36. Whoa whoa whoa. I never accused them of cheating. I said they play their starters most of the time. They do this every year. And I have no idea why? But I know that coach Hawkins DOES play by the rules. I take offense to people calling that an “even scrimmage” when 1 team plays their starters a lot and the other team doesn’t. Just because you are an official doesn’t mean you can officiate on this board. Just because you don’t like me, doesn’t mean you can put words in my mouth.
