  1. Beating Jasper may not be a win anymore against a Top 10 team in Class 4A, but it is a quality win and a game that unless you are a top tier team in Class 3A or 4A, you can lose -- especially at Alumni Stadium. Jasper is a solid opponent and their luck recently in the sectional shouldn't diminish that too greatly. Everything is cyclical. Give the new system time. The stock and bloodlines run deep in Jasper. They are VERY successful in most other boys' sports, football will return to prominence. Jasper will also benefit in the coming years of attrition from surrounding schools. Many of my classmates and former teammates, for example, work in Jasper. Unlike their parents, they have chosen to live and work in Jasper rather than commute from Spencer County. I would imagine that other school districts are also suffering/benefitting from that phenomenon as well.

  5. Congrats to Southridge on the win. Good gamem but not the way I wanted it to go. Too much Calvert at the end. Good luck in the rest your season. I wish SR and HH would stay in the schedule, but I don't see this happening. The biggest school we play in the regular season is Boonville, everyone else is 3A. I think we need to play 5A and more 4A schools to get the feel of the tournament and better competition. At least we still a big rival game with Vincennes.

  6. Yeah, it's tough to be 0-2 and possibly 0-5 by the time we get our 1st win. I don't feel our record is all because of the new coach. This is new system and sure our system as a whole has changed. We still have the same coaching staff minus a few, and a few of their roles have changed. I feel there is a chance we will only win 3-4 games this year. We have great kids and great community support. The past 50-60 years have been good to us, and it seems the past few years we haven't been as consistent as the past. You can't tell me there isn't a team that would root against Jasper. I see it on this thread all the time, but that just shows how well our sports programs have been. As far as Jasper ppl being quiet on the thread.. I bet before 2012 there weren't many GS ppl on here posting as there are now with you're program turning around.

  7. The Indiana mercy rule has the clock run through the try and then stop. It starts again when the kickoff is KICKED. It will not stop for other changes of possession. The only other times it will stop is for team time outs and injuries. I would definitely get behind this. There are a lot of things not well done in the national mechanics book and several other things that need local interpretation or philosophy defined. If kept simple it could be a valuable resource for officials and be another step in the right direction to get us all on the same page.

  8. Isn't it interesting how communication filters down from the IHSAA with respects to the officiating. I've read a few times on these exact forums that the IHSAA wants the officials to do things a certain way, or handle situations in a specific manner. HOWEVER, I never have received anything from the IHSAA themselves. In the officiating forum, someone posted about how to handle the fake kneel down situation, yet I've never heard anything from the IHSAA. I understand that they have a ton of things to monitor and rule upon and that's why there should be a supervisor of officials who is responsible for communication, training, and development.

  14. Yes! Much like the class that’s been exhibited from you and a handful of other GS members on the board in the past! Guess I don’t see the difference in pointing out how one program, who portrays themselves as the end-all be-all, has yet to make an appearance at LOS, while you point out that a tradition rich program has regressed. We’re both just stating the obvious.

  16. The IHSAA doesn't invest enough time and energy into their officiating program. I feel they appreciate us and support us, but since they don't have dedicated staff to us, it's hard to give us the attention that's probably required to be effective. They are all good people with a lot of work to do, but until they dedicate someone full time to managing the officiating program things like this will happen. Officials in every state complain about how they are treated by their state association and many of them have dedicated staff to officiating so maybe it wouldn't be any different.

  17. As a fan that occasionally gets insight into the goings on of IHSAA thru this forum, it is obvious that “IHSAA” and “makes sense” do not belong in the same sentence. 😂😂

  19. Tell that to Southridge, Heritage Hills, or Vincennes or any team in the big 8. Beating a team that has dominated you or that has a close series is the one you want. Its bragging rights. You should know that. I'm not saying Jasper is going to beat you like a drum each time but it depends on the situation. Everyone has a rival team. And I wish we could have joined the SIAC when Tell City left possibly sooner. Yeah we may only win half our games but I would rather have a close game against a good Castle or Reitz team than a Washington team you 50 points on every year. That does nothing come tournament time.

  20. Bloom. North - North has looked pretty good in their first two games, and TH South has easily won their first two games, but I have a gut feeling that North will take this one on the road. Bloom. South - After having a subpar game against the Arties, I think they will rebound on the road in this one regardless of the injuries. TH North has yet to be scored on in two games but you have to consider the competition they have faced. Both of TH North's opening opponents so far are 0-2. South's new QB, David, has to make better decisions with the ball. Col. North - I have to go with the home team on this one.

  23. For Heritage Hills its a good win because regardless of whos favored in a particular season when HH and Jasper hook up more times then not its a war.. As far as football Jasper has struggled a bit but how many programs if any can say in the past 62 seasons they have 60 winning seasons, 1 .500 season and 1 losing season ?? As a diehard Patriot fan I love to Hate the Jasper Wildcats but have the upmost respect for a program that has accomplished something few others have winning state titles in Football, Boys Basketball and Baseball all 3. 2014 last time we went to Semi State the only regular season loss was at Jasper. That said Jaspers non losing season streak that go's back to 1989 could be in jeopardy this season, The Wildcats are 0-2 and next 3 games are at Boonville, At Heritage Hills and At Vincennes plus unless they add a team have only a 8 game schedule and play in sectional that has Central, Memorial, Boonville and Reitz.

  25. You mean since 2012? When it became sooo obvious that Jasper had been supplanted by another as the best SW program outside of the SIAC? And d@mmit! That program still doesn’t get the recognition it deserves!! Even after that state finals appearan- oh.... And I think life in the SIAC will suit Jasper, and Lincoln, just fine. Jasper historically excels at every sport, boys and girls, the least of which just happens to be football at this point in time. Lincoln is just now making a return to football relevancy after a decade hiatus, and are traditionally strong in the other major sports. No doubt that both schools will take their lumps, especially in the early years. But winning the conference isn’t on either’s check list. And it’s not as if they’re projected to be bottom feeders.

  28. How about we see them win a big game first. If they beat Memorial, Castle, Reitz, Central or MD...then maybe talk about a resurgence.

  29. No. No. No. If you want to argue it shouldn’t be until 42 points, the 4th quarter, or exist at all- fine. But once it runs, it runs. The starters should never be thrown back into a game just to preserve a running clock, perhaps after sitting for 30 minutes or more. If a losing team wants to shoot off fireworks and celebrate for a full minute after cutting the lead to 35-6 so be it. But the clock shouldn’t stop.

  30. Talking with coaches and officials in other states that have this, it's a pain. I'm guessing that's why they didn't implement it here. You could end up going back and forth with clock status and everyone gets confused. The advice I've heard from them is if at all possible once you go to the running clock stay with the running clock.

  31. North, Reitz and Castle, were hard to choose from. Reitz and Castle will determine who will break the tie this Friday. North, on the other hand, will have troubles against Memorial's defense and offense. I really like what Coach P is doing with North at the moment, even though its his 2nd year, he has the ability to make North a special team.

  32. Not sure I agree with this Dave. I don’t think AD’s take a conference switch lightly, so a 2nd switch in short order would seem very unlikely. Especially when you consider neither Jasper or Vincennes would have many other options at that point. The PAC is in the midst of redoing every school’s schedule in all sports due to adding 4 teams. Not sure they’d be excited to add 2 more schools in short order, especially if those schools didn’t show much loyalty to their new conference. Much more likely, imo, the SIAC eventually adds 2 more schools, goes to divisions in football, and thus opens schedules to non-conference games again.

  35. According to the Evansville Courier, Kentucky’s mercy rule kicks in at 36. I kind of like that. It’s more than 5 scores, so something else had to happen besides 5 TD’s. Either a 2 pt, a safety, FG, etc. The idea of a team trailing by 35 and receiving the 2nd half kickoff still having a chance - at least one possession before it kicks in seems reasonable to me.

  37. Hit submit too soon. Coach Nowlin has an excellent point the 6 quarter rule needs to be tweaked. Otherwise you may have no choice but to leave your starters in a game that they are dominating.

  38. I went up to the Official, stated that I was going to be putting #13 at Center for the last 8 mins of a JV game, He was ok with it, he then went to the opposing coach to let them know, they were ok with it. We moved forward to finish the game. If a kid played 8 quarters in a week that is a violation. I can tell you in my 16 years coaching JV games, when I see quarter rules broken, I do exactly NOTHING. I could care less. Not my monkey, not my circus. We at Rensselaer choose to NOT break the quarter rule.

  40. Many years ago in a JV game, the QB came out for the last series and told me was taking a knee. I told him “be sure and immediately turn and flip me the ball.” You guessed it. He forgot to take a knee and just flipped me the ball.
