  1. Not too happy bit this particular thread. Winning games can be tough given injuries, the general youth of the team, among other factors. But these kids are out there fighting, let's not make fun of their efforts.

  2. Yeah...now that's funny!! I'll bite. Reitz fans have had the privilege of watching opposing teams carry real footballs into the end zone all year!!! Beat Harrison and Bosse. Please. SIAC should be changed to the BIG 3.

  3. ? You just made an argument that public schools all play by the same rules without knowing there has been open enrollment in every Indiana school district for the last decade. How does that not change things? I will assure you that parents and students are choosing public schools from outside their current district for the sole purpose of athletics? How does that not level the playing field? Not every P/P is an athletic juggernaut and you would be penalizing schools that already struggle in their current classification. The success factor is suffice.

  4. I’d rather see it in the last days of November with sleet, mud and wind outside while comfortably ensconced on the 50 yard line at Lucas Oil Stadium. To make it perfect you could add a pizza buffet.......

  5. Sit back, as this is going to take a while. But if you are really interested in this issue, I think it’s worth it. I think DT is one of the more progressive, out-of-the-box thinkers on this site. But DT and I are going to have to part company on this one. If you are going to address competitive issues by adding criteria other than raw size to a classification system, a Success Factor (SF) is a much better way to do it than a Multiplier (M). The M is a broadsword when what we are really looking for is a scalpel. Here’s why. In order to determine the best solution, you must first identify the issue and then decide on the goal you want to achieve. The issue the classification system attempts to address is simply that schools that are larger have advantages over schools that are smaller. Nowhere is this more evident than in football, which is in some respects, a numbers game. The goal of a classification system is to, within practical limits, have like schools playing like schools. The call for a classification system that takes into account more than just sheer school size came about not because P/Ps have some distinct advantages (although they do), but because they were having success disproportionate to their numbers. Is it really an advantage if it is not translated into success? Of course not. It was not uncommon to go to Thanksgiving weekend in Indy and see 60% P/Ps in the finals, when they comprise only 10% (or less) of the football-playing schools. This disparity was reflected in all levels of the tournament, i.e., sectional, regional and semistate championships. It has been well-documented on here that P/Ps have certain advantages: Absence of geographic boundaries, giving them access to a theoretically greater pool of potential players. A demographic makeup that results in their students being more willing/able to participate in extracurricular activities. A selective admissions process that, again theoretically, allows them to “recruit” athletes. Of course, there are P/P supporters who will fight you to the death as to whether these advantages actually exist, whether they are offset by advantages that public schools have, or whether these advantages translate to athletic success. But let’s assume for the sake of argument that these advantages do exist, and that they can result in greater athletic success. The problem with a M is that it treats all P/Ps exactly the same when it is inarguably clear that they are not. Some P/Ps capitalize on their inherent advantages, and some do not. No one in his right mind would argue that Cathedral and Bishop Noll should be treated the same. Yet, that is what a M system does. Chatard is a perennial contender for a state championship. Park Tudor has won just 15 of the 70 games they’ve played going back to the 2013 season. Yet, a M treats them as if they were the same. A classification system that seeks to promote fairness should address the real issue: disproportionate success resulting from a willingness to take advantage of the factors that contribute to success. Some P/Ps do, and some don’t. A M paints with too broad a brush. Since the issue is disproportionate success, a classification system based on success is the best way to address the issue. Now, you can certainly quibble over whether the current SF system is the best way to go about it. Is the cycle too short? Does it award the right number of “points” to certain achievements? Does it measure disproportionate success accurately? But what you can’t argue is that a success based system is the only fair way to address the problem of inherent advantages resulting in disproportionate success. Because it’s only when a school uses those advantages to be disproportionately successful that a perceived problem arises. If all the P/Ps had a level of success like Bishop Noll and Park Tudor, would anyone be clamoring for a M or SF? Of course not. The other positive attribute of a SF system is that is applies across the board to all schools, not just P/Ps. Because, you see, there are public schools that have advantages, too. They have greater access to financial resources than P/Ps. They pay their coaches better. They generally have better facilities. When was the last time you saw a P/P float a bond issue? New Palestine is a great example. During the same period that Park Tudor was 15-55, New Pal went 82-4, with 4 sectional titles, 4 regionals, 3 semistates, and 2 state championships. They have certain advantages in terms of their demographics, facilities, and, most importantly a supportive administration and community. They’ve leveraged those advantages into great success. In other words, they’ve proved they can punch above their weight class. A M system, however, would not address their disproportionate success. But under the SF, they are 5A, rather than the 4A they would be simply by enrollment. And they’re doing quite nicely in 5A. So there is no unfairness there. The bottom line is that if the objective of a classification system is to have like schools playing like, so that the playing field is “level,” a M is too blunt an instrument. Its basic assumption – that all P/Ps are alike – is demonstrably wrong. If you’re going to address a disproportionate level of success for certain schools, then the best way to do it is to affect the schools that use their inherent advantages – whatever they may be – to achieve that disproportionate level of success, and not make things even harder for those schools who, for whatever reason, have not been able to translate whatever perceived advantages they have into that type of success. My two cents.

  11. Sounds to me like your saying Salem cant beat the good teams. Also you failed to mention that Bosse held Memorial to 10 points going into the fourth quarter. Washington scored late and Lincoln capitalized on at least 4 Bosse turnovers Just keep telling yourself that Bosse is not good. Not saying they will win the sectional but they are very much a sleeper.

  13. I get what you are stating, but I don't know if I would say a majority of teams. I see a few that seem to be backsliding. I also see a few that are not backsliding and not improving. It has definitely been a interesting year in 6A. Of course that will make it that much more fun come playoffs. What I think is interesting about the Cathedral vs Center Grove match-up every year is how it usually plays out. A couple of years I have seen comments where people thought both teams would be conservative being the last game of the season heading into the tournament. Usually it is the exact opposite, both teams lay it all out on the line. Should be a good game between two great programs.

  14. That Bosse defense gave up 21 points to Washington. That is the most points Washington has scored this year. Washington only scored more that 1 TD in one other game this year. That Bosse defense lost to Vincennes and gave up 28 points. That is the 2nd most points Vincennes has scored this year. That Bosse defense gave up 45 points to Central. That is the most points Central has scored this year.

  24. This will be the second toughest sectional in the state! I believe we can all agree on this: the winner of this sectional will earn it for sure. But I have a question, we seemed to have jumped straight to the tournament, why is there no talk of the SR vs GS week nine match up any where?? C'mon man, two ranked 3A opponents in week nine!! Where's all the hype??!!

  27. An ugly win is still a win, and now Green Bay has a firm grip on the division. Sure there were bad calls, but Detroit, in typical Detroit fashion, cannot do what they need to for a win. The Packers have been on the other side of bad calls plenty of times. I will take the win. But the Lions had plenty of opportunities to run away with the game. They had the ball on or inside the Packers 35 yard line 6 times in the game, and come away with just 22 points. They were 3 of 13 on 3rd down. They had 188 yards of offense in just the first quarter, and made it inside the Green Bay 10 on their first 3 possessions, but come away with just 13 points. Add to it, that Detroit had 12 men on the field when Green Bay was settling for a FG. The penalty gives the Pack a 1st down, and they go on to get the TD. Trade the TD back for the FG, and Detroit wins. like I said though, I will take the win. I still like this defense. Pettine’s ability to adjust is pretty impressive. The Detroit offense did not do much after the first quarter.

  29. I have no illusions about the likelihood of doing away with the all in format. The “welfare” mentality persists among coaches, fans, administrators, etc., since they’ve never had to earn the right to playoff participation, it’s become a handout. And if you asked 320 people who have been getting a freebie for 30+ years whether they’d be willing to give it up “for the good of society in general,” how many of them do you think would be willing to do so? The problem is that everyone is committed to doing what is best for his or her school. No one is looking out for the best interests of Indiana high school football in general. So, with that mentality, Indiana football will never be as good as it could be.

  30. I wouldn't say fast tracked. Experiments are only allowed for 3 years so it would have been removed for Indiana this year if the NFHS rules committee hadn't passed it. This was the 5th year it was voted on. The first year Mr. Faulkens submitted it and it failed he wanted to do an experiment, but he found out there is a formal process to get approved for an experiment. It was voted on the next year and failed, but he got approval for the experiment. After the first and second year it was submitted again but failed again. That's why this year's vote was critical for Indiana to retain this rule everyone seems to love.

  36. The proponents of seeding AND a qualifying format would likely get to watch a Chatard/Yorktown and Guerin/Brebeuf first round match-up and West Lafayette (and North Mont) would likely be in a completely different bracket and would get to face the winner of this group at the semi-state or state finals where it should rightfully take place. Crawfordsville wouldn't even be in the picture. Things to ponder....

  37. How bout this scenario WL on the road to HH, and they win Guerin Catholic beats Yorktown: WL would then travel to Guerin for round 2 Chatard on road, beats Brebeuf North Mont on the road beats Crawfordsville Chatard would then travel to North Mont for round 2 WL beats Guerin and Chatard beats North Mont...... Both WL and Chatard have equal number of games played on the ROAD, bottom team owns tiebreaker, and there you have it folks, the more unique anomaly, where a team can play and win a sectional title without playing 1 home game. If that scenario plays out and WL pulls that off, then I say give them the ring and don't worry about playing the rest of the string out. Of course that is just 1 scenarios and one that may not even come to fruition.

  38. HH over Corydon. GS over Salem. Southridge over Mt. Vernon. Bosse over N. Harrison. HH @ GS. I'll take HH again but GS will be much closer this time. Southridge @ Bosse. Bulldogs in the upset. HH over Bosse. Bosse is 2-3 players away from beating a team like HH. Patriots will wear them down. _____________ @PAC FAN - GS is on the marquee, but winning state and being runner-up (and beating 2 Indy p/p along the way) makes Memorial the headliner of the show in 3A South.

  39. I do find it amusing, even though we have had a few rebuilds over the years the pitch forks come a calling this week But when you look at the draw, I mean, statistically speaking, the Avon/Brownsburg game is not a surprise as only 4 teams vs 8 teams Then to have only 2 other matchups that creates outrage is pretty darn impressive Don't forget to become a booster today!!!

  40. I would take options 2 & 3 combined. "Back in the day", meaning the early 1980's for myself, we played a 10 game regular season schedule and had to qualify for the playoffs. I believe that was the infamous "cluster" era?

  44. Brohm has stated multiple times this season in pressers that they attempted to pull in JUCO lineman and things didn't pan out. The effort was there to do so, but you cannot force folks to come and you also cannot risk bringing in someone that doesn't fit your culture. The coaching on display this week was OUTSTANDING, created competition in all spots ,shuffled up OL, Plummer got the ball out fast and confidently, new look defense with some guys moving around and creating aggressive havoc was on display. Great Win for sure. David Bell. Still the Truth
