  1. Single elimination tournaments are designed to crown a champion, not parse out who the best team is. In my examples above, the losers win those games 9 times out of 10. Herb Brooks said it best in his pregame speech to the US Hockey Team before the game with the USSR in 1980, if we play them 10 times, they will win 9, but not this game, not tonight. Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world.

  2. It's time to get this thing started. A little more than 72 hours away from Sectional 32 Championship with a great rivalry, and two schools that are only separated by 8 miles!!! 11-0 Heritage Hills vs 9-2 Southridge. There is talk that Southridge had several key players missing in the first meeting besides the QB. I am wondering if there is any truth to that and what impact it may have on the game!! Obviously the tournament success that Raider Nation has enjoyed in recent history will definitely be something that Southridge can rely on in this game. Heritage Hills conversely coming off one of the craziest wins in program history will be playing at home for the first time in a month!! One would think that would be a huge asset to this Senior dominated team! Will the ground and pound mentality of the Patriots offense and defense continue to roll?? I expect nothing less than a heavy weight match up like Ali and Foreman!! Hay makers and body blows from both teams! I can't wait. Now let's start talking!!

  5. The IHSAA, for some inexplicable reason, has not appreciated the excellence of the Field of Champions (Broad Ripple) and has moved playoff games away from there some years back.

  6. Thank God these game are played out on the field...GS is a really good team. All good teams aren’t perfect and these HS kids deal with enough adversity out on that field. If the boys looked tired in your version, then maybe they were, BUT they hung tough and won. They did exactly what they needed to do, rather than pray GS misses, they knew they had to somehow get a block, which they did. Same boys played in this game that blitzed GS 49-14. GS looked tired in that game— in my opinion. BUT GS regrouped and had a great run. Credit GS by putting 8 guys in the box all night. But they did that the first game too. HH deserved to win... 11-0 for many reasons and being tired is not one of them! GS is a class program and as T32 mentioned in another post reply, we only make each better in games like this... SR - GS - And HH constantly push each other. In fact this years big 3 in the PAC could toe to toe with ANY team in the SIAC this year meaning Central, Memorial MD and Castle. Reitz, North, Bosse all would be ran off the field based on what “I” see.... I’m a grid Coach too in this cyber football field!!

  7. 2008 Enlow was the coldest I have ever been......EVER......anytime....anywhere. I, quite seriously, just have not been able to tolerate cold weather as much ever since. I did enjoy making buddies and hanging out with a couple of guys from Reitz and Mater Dei who where attending. They gave me some extra hand and foot warmers as well. 2009 was, in fact, at Tech on a Saturday. Nice weather but same result as Enlow. I know lots of folks love Tech but I just have never felt the love for it personally. 2009 didn’t help me like it any better, either.

  12. We were supposed to be heading home last year as well. I think EM has answers the bell every time vs Chatard. Repect Chatard and you guys are the gold standard for 3A football but we would be playing Friday if in 32. Just as we are in 24. Last years game would have been a running clock for semistate.

  14. Is this game being broadcast/webcast? Not seeing it on IHSAATV (and affiliates) and I don’t know what WHMB40’s Game of the Week is as of yet. Given that it’s between No’s 1 and 2 per Sagarin and featuring the Defending State Champ vs. an upstart Cinderella team, it just might be worth broadcasting.

  15. In your tenure (10 years) in high school, how many teams did you play on that won the tomahawk. Oh none that is right., you act as if you have all this knowledge of football but at the end of the day you only know the ending stats. You have never played so you don't actually know what it takes to win. You have never been accurate at predicting what will happen, just good at talking about what happened after the fact. This has been going on from MightyJones to JohnnyFootball and now ultimate warrior. Your not in the know like you think you are because all the people you know, I know them as well and they tell whatever they can to get you to leave. There is a reason why, if your so well connected and such a football genius as you believe yourself to be, you have never been on a coaching staff.

  16. wouldn't having 7 turnovers and 2 safeties and the penalties be the definition of being "out played" Not trying to start a fight here, but that to me seems like one team played well, the other team didn't which led to the results of the 2 games.

  17. I'm sure that this topic has been approached in the past, but why is there still home field advantage in the tournament after sectional? IMO, Regional & Semi-State should be played on neutral site between the two schools. Since there is no Sectional Rankings, how do they decide who gets homefield? Basketball and Baseball do it, why can't football?

  18. Problem is that Dwenger lost their best defensive player for the season and the true leader of that D. It hasn’t hurt them yet. North Side had a kick return and a 15 yard TD drive so the 22 they gave up is a little deceiving. However, losing Hayden Ellinger is going to hurt them big time after the sectional championship when they play a team like Harrison and Valpo if they make it that far. When they had Ellinger yes I believe they had arguably one of the best D’s in the state regardless of class. They might’ve just lost one of their other best players for the season. They’re losing players at the wrong time.

  23. 2008 3A South Semi-State was at Enlow. Frigid. Cold. 2009 3A South Semi-State was in Indy at the place in near downtown... Tech? Surrounded by brick wall (like Enlow).

  24. ‘08 semi state was at the friendly confines of Enlow Field in Evansville. The last game on grass in that stadium as the EVSC installed turf the next spring. I might have lost a toe due to frostbite that night. ’09 was at Arsenal Tech. Not sure if that was the IHSAA’s doing or BCHS. Haven’t been back since, but I’ve heard it has been renovated and turfed since then. It was a classic stadium, IMO.

  25. I’m not saying that’s a bad idea- but no that wasn’t the purpose of this thread. I was genuinely curious as to how the process worked. And I’m still not entirely sure how it does from reading all these responses. I have let my feelings known -I think it’s a shame the deeper in the tournament to see a game played on adverse conditions (thinking Luers last year) when plenty of turf fields are available. Just my opinion

  27. Agree with Temptation on this. You’ve got 2 teams in 5A as good as anyone in the State. I think Valpo might well be there, also. Jury is out on Dwenger. Need to see them play more non-SAC teams. Big drop-off after that.

  34. 2-11 career wise I believe against Penn if you scroll back through the archives from Mishawaka to now. Absolutely knowing and doing are two different things. I guess my point should have been that he has beaten Penn and been very competitive with them at times when Penn was rolling everybody else on their schedule. Penn is always going to be Penn. A record like this year is reflective of the Valpo squad and the two out of state powers Homewood F and St X. and a rolling New Prairie team. Beating Penn is a season maker for most schools in Northern Indiana. Your point is noted and well-taken. Good luck to both teams.

  35. I have never seen such a star-crossed season. I didn't even know how to react when Plummer went down. It was beyond "are you kidding me?" because there have been so many others. I think it was more like "well of course he is hurt." O'Connell has looked decent in limited time. Odds are they won't get a bowl game anyway, so hopefully they can beat Northwestern and keep the bucket in West Lafayette.

  36. This will have nothing to do with Friday's outcome , but Bart Curtis is 0-8 the last 8 meetings with Penn . Knowing how to beat Penn and actually doing it Must be two different things .

  37. Ah, in all its glory the "Field of Champions"! Still can't believe the IHSAA didn't want the game played here (wasn't it against Gibson Southern)?

  38. Anything can happen, but the cards a sure stacked against Bloomington. On the road, trying to beat a team twice, after a semi blow out in the first match up. So if the knights win, will it be for the fact that they are the better team or because of all the other factors going into the game? Will Hurt out coach moriority in this one? Seems the talent is even on both teams.Just a few things to think about.

  39. Did you choose to not read my comment that Carroll is undervalued? Besides, thanks to Homestead’s near disaster @Noblesville the league needs to rethink it’s inclusive scheduling. Crap, I’m going all DT again.

  40. I mean... they also played (and beat) both Elkhart Central (9-2) and Mishawaka (7-3) who square off in 5A Sectional 10 championship Friday night.

  41. Snider beat common opponents by a wider margin. They both lost to Dwenger by 7. And Snider came closer to beating Homestead than Carroll did. I actually like the Sagarin Ratings come sectional championship time. It's probably even more accurate this year with the addition of the Mercy Rule.

  42. Thanks for the info Bob. I think what most coaches need to realize is just cause it was tolerated by one crew one week- doesn’t mean it’s that way the next Friday. Like with many things in life- different crews have different personalities and it’s just the way it is. What really has bothered me is when different side-judges on the SAME CREW have a different interpretation of the rules! A couple times this year I’ve had a side judge be pretty strict with his sideline- no problem- that is his right. But then I look over and see the opposing coach darn near to the numbers on multiple occasions- and when I point it out that I just want a fair shake of the rules it’s just a “I’ll tell him” response- but ya know how that goes.

  43. I was just looking at the strength of the various Sectionals and absorbing some of the subtle condescension elsewhere here when discussing 6A vs. the rest of the State. So, I decided to look at the average strength of the various 6A Sectionals (which have 4 teams each) vs. the top 4 teams in 3A Sectional 28 (Chatard, West Lafayette, Brebeuf and Guerin). The only real possible comparison was to use analytics so I defaulted to Sagarin. I could have used Calpreps, etc. but chose Sagarin since it is so often utilized here. I averaged the Sagarin strength rating of each 6A Sectional v. the top 4 teams in 3A Sectional 28. The results were interesting. The top 4 teams in 3A Sectional 28 had an average Sagarin Rating of 82.68 Only 6A Sectionals 4, 5 and 7 had higher average Sagarin Ratings (98.79, 95.66 and 91.85 respectively) 6A Sectionals 1, 2, 3, 6 (Perry Meridian really drags the average down in this Sectional) and 8 were all lower on average than Sectional 28 (77.27, 72.36, 80.48, 69.19 and 82.17 respectively). As it also turns out, only Sectional 4, 5 and 7 had a higher Sagarin rated individual team than the highest Sagarin rated team in Sectional 28. The top team in 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8 were all lower rated. Interesting (and useless) factoid but maybe a bow in the quiver of some of the smaller classes should they spy some 6A chest beating going on. To be clear, the champion of a Class is just that....their Class champ. They aren’t champion of the class or classes above (or even below them). My main point (and burr in my butt) is the automatic assumption that bigger means better......by default when it comes to talking about individual teams playing one another. It doesn’t. And before we talked about teams more recently like New Pal (who is the default example) there were other teams in Indiana like Mater Dei and Luers that for decades had consistently beat or competed evenly against schools multiple times bigger than they were and it was EXPECTED that they would win more than their share of those games. There seems to be some thought process that somehow every 6A school is a MIC (or HCC) school as regards football. Most 6A schools are just pretty average.......some just flat out piss poor. Keep in mind, 5A is only as strong as it is because of the 4A teams that moved into it and dominated that class. Good teams are good teams and it shouldn’t be some shock that they beat bigger teams. Rant over......maybe.
