  1. Great piece by WTHR on Cade Thompson...a Ben Davis sophomore football player who was diagnosed with cancer. Cade is the brother of Brock and Trevor Thompson and the son of former MLB player Ryan Thompson. https://www.wthr.com/article/sports/local-sports/cade-thompson-faces-unexpected-cancer-diagnosis/531-67a3abaf-7131-43f5-adc3-baabc10ea190

  2. I'm not sure aligning the youth program plays, etc. is a necessity for success. I think it's much more about creating an environment that draws kids in and sustains kids playing over time. In my 18 seasons of coaching youth ball at LCC, I officially retired this season, I have seen six head coaches and an interim coach. Every time we'd get a new coach, we'd ask the question if there's anything they wanted us specifically to be teaching the kids in the program. It always came down to safe procedures, understanding the proper way to do things, why we do things, and stoking their continued interest in the game; keeping them engaged until their bodies and skill caught up with their enthusiasm for the game. Even had a couple of them specifically state that, given the nature of the game, there's no guarantee that what the high school was running when the player was in 3rd grade would be the same six years later ... or that the coach might be different too. I think there is a move afoot now to do things like use similar nomenclature as the high school, but that still isn't the same as offensive schemes, defensive schemes, etc. A colleague of mine that also coached in the youth league with me for many years broke down the idea of the successful feeder program ... at least based on how we did it at LCC. All the teams, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, junior high, and high school practice on the same stretch of land with the 3rd/4th closest to the school and moving successively out. He told me that our main job was to keep those kids engaged/involve and learning the game so that they would move from here to there to there to there and eventually to there on Friday nights *gesturing from the 3rd/4th grade practice area to the 5th/6th grade practice area to the junior high practice area to the high school practice area to the varsity field*. He said, however, the most important aspect of that was not the kids, but to also get their moms to move in that progression as well because we had to make sure that we were providing something that they were comfortable with regarding safety, fun, and ROI for the family time spent with the player playing.

  6. We have 41 juniors and 8 seniors. Big skill players losses in QB, RB1, WR1, 2DL, 1 S. This senior class was Coach Peebles’ first freshmen class. Entire O Line will be back. NFL prospect TE. Best slot receiver in the state. D1 Kicker. And, a nasty linebacking crew all return. We are not halfway to a title run this year, so let’s not put the cart before the horse. Much work to do starting with an underrated LaSalle team at Arlington on Friday.

  8. We’ll be 2/3’s the way done with the regular season at the conclusion of Friday’s games. With playoffs rapidly approaching that means it’s also appropriate to talk about the state’s most coveted award; Mr. Football. In my opinion there’s 3 candidates who have separated themselves from the rest the pack. 1. Carsen Steele-Center Grove. A four year starter for the Trojans, it seems like a decade ago we first heard Steele’s name. After an injury ridden season last year, Steele picked up right where he left off. Carsen is the top offensive standout on one of the best teams in the entire country. 2. Donovan McCulley-Lawrence North. This is the sexy pick. Top offensive rated player in the state committed to the states flagship university. McCulley has been fantastic this year and is the key component to a very impressive LN turnaround. A strong finish to the end of the year and a potential section victory could make him the front runner. 3. Nathan McCahill-Cathedral. This time last year you’d be hard pressed to find anybody outside the Cathedral family that was familiar with the name McCahill. McCahill’s transformation from reserve receiver to star QB has been a treat to watch. Has put up ridiculously numbers against stout opponents week in and week out and is a major reason why Cathedral sits 5-0 on the year. He’s won the IndyStar performer of the week three times now and certainly on the radar. These in my opinion are the top 3 candidates but feel free to give worthy recognition to those out there.

  9. It's pretty safe to say that, if you make it to LOS, strength of schedule goes out the window. Would their ring color be different? Maybe. One questionable no call and one obvious missed call may have made the difference in previous championship games but all the credit goes to the teams that beat us. They were very athletic and well coached. We could've played a 6A schedule last year and it wouldn't have mattered. Western Boone was unstoppable.

  10. Fort Wayne/NE Indiana top players to be considered: Duce Taylor, QB Ft Wayne Northside: thru 5 games; 89-145, 1651 yards, 20 TD's, 2 INTs with 2 rushing TD's. Hurt by the fact N Side is sitting at 2-3 on the year and likely not getting out of the sectional with Dwenger there. Stat machine. James Arnold, QB South Adams: thru 5 games; 71-101, 1396 yards, 18 TD's, 2 INT's. 4 year starter for 5-0 #2 ranked team in 1A. Should have a great post season run, BUT being in 1A hurts historically. Mason Englert, WR Ft Wayne Carroll: thru 5 games; 35 catches, 835 yards, 11 TD's receiving, 12 TD's total. Top receiver in area on a very good 4-1 6A Carroll team (IFCA #6).

  12. My wife and I were having a similar conversation this week. Our youngest son is playing tackle football for the first time this fall. I can see that he and a few of his friends easily frustrate a coach. If your main goal is to win the 3/4th grade league, it would be easy to run them all practice and never play them. Luckily his coach understands his role is to teach basic fundamentals, help them improve, and keep their enjoyment of the game. Obviously the goal of the league is safety and skill development (are you ever going to get perfection from 3/4th graders?) A varsity coach can teach you what they call inside zone and outside zone, but a bad elementary school coach can run a player off before he ever gets the chance.

  14. on this day, my vote would be for LT Blake Fisher, Avon High School. I contend he is as important and dominant player than those 3 tremendous offensive skill position players listed right there as well and I wouldn't blink twice if any those kids won it, but Fisher is what the "yutes" say these days, IS A DUDE. 17. Decent parity but don’t understand the need for a conference that doesn’t allow every team to play one another and effectively crowning a conference champion? That and you eliminate any possibility of scheduling out of conference, thus effectively ending long time rivalries; Chatard-Cathedral, Columbus North-East, etc. It’s a no for me.

IF, and it's a big IF, Center Grove gets upset in the tournament, the team coming out of the North can compete with any of those other teams in the South. If Center Grove makes it to State, I'll be heading to the bars early that night because I won't need to stick around LOS after the 2nd quarter.

  24. The WRC is certainly down this year compared to previous seasons, but there still is a rich history in the conference, and some of them will bounce back as the talent cycles. Here's how I see your games for this week: NV over Attica - NV seems to be getting healthy and better each week. The Falcons probably need to win this game and the FC game to avoid the 1-win season, as PH & Seeger are probably favored over them in the coming weeks. The Ramblers are on life support. How many players do they have on the roster? Anyway, I'll take the Falcons over my mom's alma mater by 24+. Covington over South Newton - Do the Trojans still have that soft grass? That was the softest field I ever set foot on, but of course that was 40 years ago, so it's probably changed a little since then. The Rebels seniors have not won a football game in their HS careers. They looked better when I saw them earlier this season, but they still have a way to go. Rebels have a couple good linemen and a couple good backs, but the Trojans should still prevail. Seeger over FC - This used to be the big game in the WRC, but not so much this year. How many people know the Patriots were the Indians when the school opened? I have seen the basketball warm-up that pops wore. My picture is the helmet he wore for Seeger in the early 60s. I have the helmet in my office now. The Mustangs are nothing like the teams of old, at least not this year. The Patriots should win this one easily. RP over Cloverdale - Does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care? Take the Panthers and some aspirin over the Clovers. Parke Heritage over South Vermillion - The Wolves (why were Rockville & Turkey Run consolidated and Riverton Parke left out?) may not necessarily be beating the Green Bay Packers every week, but they are winning and winning big. Coach Moore may be seen as an opportunist, but he wins wherever he goes. I like Coach, he may be arrogant sometimes, but I've been known to be that way myself every once in a while. He should be wary of the Wildcats, who apparently are the favorites to run the table in 2A this year. Have they backtracked from all that talk now that Sullivan brought them back to earth. Anyway, if the SV players are aware of all the SEC & Big 12 scouts watching these D1 recruits, it could be a major distraction. I'll take the coaching of the Wolves over the Wildcats this week. Have some fun with these. If these picks bother you, get over it. If you'd like to convince me how wrong I am, get to it. I love the WRC and the area around Attica, Williamsport, West Lebanon, Veedersburg & Judyville. It's where my roots are, so good luck to all the teams this week and I hope they all get to play.

  26. Really wish Jeff could join a new conference because they need stronger competition badly, but i really just don’t see any options. The past 3 years they would probably fit right in the 4-5 spot in the HCC. They’ve taken down Westfield and Noblesville in sectionals recently and also played Carmel good 2 years ago, were even up 14-0 on them. Would be hard for them to be the only Lafayette school to leave the NCC. Harrison would probably be the the second worst HCC team this year ahead of Franklin Central (could maybe beat Noblesville but i doubt it) and McCutcheon is just a lost cause at this point. Really nowhere for them to go, but they have surely made themselves a reputable opponent in the past 5 years

  28. It depends if you want to define strength as parity or top-tier team that can make a deep run. I see the SIAC winning 4 sectionals, one per class 2A - 5A. I don't see any teams winning regional, similar to 2016.

  30. I did not mean to imply anyone is teaching without the requirements. I do believe the state passed a law around 2012 making it possible to teach courses with an accredited university degree, then I believe they have a certain amount of time to get a teaching license... I do think it's feasible for a school corporation to hire a trainer who doesn't teach classes, just as they might hire a landscaping company to mow, police for event security, or a paving company to work on the parking lot. It's up to the school boards in Indiana, elected by townships, to allocate funds as they see fit, so long as they are not breaking DOE rules/Indiana state law.

  32. So, before this year, what was the standard protocol for someone that had pneumonia? Just as dangerous to basically the same demographics and pretty much the same spread rate. Your sick, you stay home until you feel better. The rest of the world goes on. My point is, what changed? The introduction of COVID, followed by the crazy increase in deaths in New York following the panic signaled from the Governor after he put COVID positive patients in nursing homes among the elderly which inflated the death numbers, followed by including "probable" data from patients not even tested, which brought the numbers higher and instilled a level of fear that is dictating the "new normal". You don't hear anymore about the NY Governor screaming for the help that he actually didn't need. Notre Dame has postponed a game this weekend because 7 players tested positive yesterday (they have daily tests btw) not one has symptoms, but they and there contacts have to be quarantined. One year ago, a player gets sick and has symptoms bad enough he just doesn't play, gets back in the game when he gets over whatever he had, but the rest of the team goes on. Not anymore.

  33. Some really good thoughts. 1. Back to back classes is huge. 3-4 in a row and ur starting to talk powerhouse not just a solid program. 2. O’Shea was the first name that came to my mind as well. LCC dropped off quite a bit immediately after his departure and he’s done a great job at N.C. but it’s 6a so I wasn’t sure how pertinent my post was to that class. 3. Weights and nutrition are icing on the cake once u have the athletes interested and involved. Which is a biggest hurdle for many programs across the state. If u don’t get the athletes to play then it doesn’t matter what u feed ur team.

  35. For a lot of mid-size or small schools in NE Indiana, the strength coach is a PE teacher in the building. At Garrett, it is not just football. All teams follow the same S and C program year-round. Ideally, the kids train during the school day through a class we offer. If they do not have that class, it is their in season coach's responsibility to have them training in the weight room at least two days a week. They coordinate that all through the S and C coach. If they do not have the class and they are not in season, there are training groups after school. Our S and C class is open to non-athletes, but they do and follow the same program as everyone else.

  36. For a few years, our PE teacher would have weight lifting as part of PE. Worked out fine. The team could still lift after school. I believe they "contracted" with a fitness gym until a weight room was built at the school. Also with the way things are these days, you could trade off in advertising for services rendered. There are many businesses that have commercials during the Linton broadcasts on the radio. They could just put up a sign on the fence at the football stadium. No difference really.

  37. Over half the season has been played. It is safe to say we have a better understanding of each team now. Mid-Season Report: Central, North, and Jasper has separated them self from the rest of the SIAC. The second group is Memorial, Mater Dei, Vincennes Lincoln, and Castle. This group relies on their defense first and hopes the offense can score enough points to win. Each of these teams are a toss up when they play. The bottom grouping is Reitz, Bosse, and Harrison. I am not sure what to think about Reitz. They do have a last second win against Vincennes and a win against Harrison. But the team on the hill is struggling on both sides of the ball. They do have a chance to move up into the middle grouping. All of the bottom teams have new coaches/staff and this is probably causing their struggles. Mid-Season ranking with season ending predicted season records: 1. Central (9-0) 2. North (8-1) 3. Jasper (8-2) 4. Memorial (6-3) 5. Castle (5-3) 6. Mater Dei (4-5) 7. Vincennes Lincoln (2-8) 8. Reitz (3-6) 9. Harrison (1-8) 10. Bosse (0-8) To this week games: Castle @ Reitz: Knights 31-14 Bosse @ Memorial: Tigers with a running clock in the 4th. 42-12 Harrison @Vincennes Lincoln: Alices pulls away in the second half. 35-14 Mater Dei @ North: North wins this, but MD will keep it close. 28-17 Game of the Week: Jasper @ Central Jasper now enters the hardest part of their schedule. Central is so talented and fast. It will be very interesting to see what the DC come up with to try to stop the other team. However in the end, Central has more overall talent and speed than Jasper. Central wins pulling away. Bears 38-21

I took a look at their recruits that show up on 247 Sports: Class of 2021: 6'1 CB committed to Cincinnati, 6'1 S committed to Ohio State, 6'0 CB committed to Alabama, and 6'0 CB committed to Miami (OH) Class of 2022: 4 Star RB with offers from Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Penn State, etc. That is an impressive amount of talent in the Secondary. They did give up over 50 points to Elder (2 OT game). I'll go with Irish by 15.

  45. Some good thoughts and observations on this topic of discussion. I'd like to see more topics like this on here. I would like to add the following: If a school hires a new coach I would think his first order of business would be to meet with the head coaches of the junior high teams and the youth league(s) to discuss his offensive and defensive philosophies with them. If a kid has played the same defense and offense through junior high then in high school he'll know it backwards and forwards when he gets to his freshman year. I realize mostly in the youth leagues they are being taught techniques for blocking, tackling, etc but they do run some offense and defense. And if a coach is hired by a program that has no youth league, then I would hope his first order of business would be to get one started. I also realize some of the smaller schools may only have one grade school. In that case, they could still have a team but play other schools in the area. Maybe you'll only have a 4 or 5 game season, but at least they would be getting experience and exposure they can use at the junior high level. That is how I see a program being built and a program being consistently successful. You wouldn't build a house without a good foundation under it. So that is what I see: you MUST have a good foundation to have a successful program. Hey, just my two cents and maybe not worth that much in some people's eyes, but there it is.

  46. There are exceptions to every rule. North Central in Indy is a good example. O'Shea is in his 4th season and is 22-15. Went 3-7 the first year, but NC only won 1 game in the previous 3. Won their first sectional championship in school history. There's been one D1 player in the first 3 years and one that has verbally committed this season. The coaching staff is exceptional. Junior high success may be the key. This year, they have 4 defensive players that have started varsity for 3 years. That will deplete anyone's JV team. Previous Coaches: 1-29 ; 16-38; 14-19;
