  4. So I realize I'm not one of the more active people here (174 posts), but just curious why I'm only allowed two reactions per day? Is there a threshold that once you pass a certain number of posts you get more? Website host rules maybe? Not that I would put up a ridiculous number of reactions, but sometimes after reading through the stimulating discussions here, I could see myself with 3 to 5 during a day. Not complaining, just curious.

  9. Bowling Alone is a book published in 2000 about the decline of bowling leagues and what the author thinks that means for American society at large. I never read it, but I think the decline of bowling leagues, from what I remember and probably in response to this book, was a widely interpreted to mean that Americans were becoming more insular. Certainly, there would be other factors at play, but do a quick search on the book and you can find the publisher's page that describes what the author attempts to show. There is no reason to think that other community activities or school extracurriculars--even those for the most vibrant of us all--would be immune to some sort of larger and pervasive societal malady of indifference, the struggle with the demands of modern life or a disinterest or inability to seek connection with others...in person.

  11. I suspect, with the new system layout, that the number of reactions is probably tied to level. If I recall correctly, even with the older system, a "newbie" was limited to having to make x number of posts ... I think it was 10 ... before you could start a topic. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a correlation with level and number of reactions granted. The other thing that I noticed with the new system is that, some items carried forward, such as number of posts; however, I think the ranks are based on posts SINCE the new system commencement. As such, 175 posts would normally classify you as more than a newbie, but that's your lifetime posts as opposed to those registered for rank by the new system.

  12. Long time educator here (37 years). Money has nothing to do with state support. I hear all the time to leave the science to the scientist. State support to me is treating the profession with respect, and leaving the teaching to the teachers. Quit tying our hands and be supportive. Not everything is about money. It should be about the STUDENTS!

  13. Maybe those government school extracurriculars are not as interesting to the current student body as they once were? Maybe more students want or need jobs? As for parents being overworked, when more and more of your paycheck goes to the government to pay for state and federal entitlements you have to work more to have that nice SUV, McMansion, DirectTV w/ the max number of channels, multiple cell phones, etc.

  18. I think that there are a lot of valid points with all of this. I still believe that the major issue with athletics in our state is that kids don't get free time away. Our football team was doing things in the gym starting in December and used the open facilities to their fullest. If you have seen us play it hasn't helped. When most of us played in the 80's and 90's we had our season, if we wrestled or played basketball we did that, then we went to our spring sport. I played three sports and never had to practice a sport out of season. During the summer we had weights for football three days a week for an hour or two and open gyms for basketball once to twice a week for a couple of hours. These were in the evening so kids could work and if someone didn't show up the coaches didn't get their panties in a bundle. We are asking too much of kids and they decide to give up these activities so they can work, chase girls, or do something on their own. They don't need to have a coach telling them they need to lift, do 7 on 7, show up to walk throughs then go to basketball and play two leagues a week and go to workouts/open gyms. Then attend team camps on the weekends. Kids that want to work or have to work to make money so they can have a car or just some cash to take their girls out to dinner can't do that and play sports. When you make kids choose they will choose. Don't be upset when they don't choose what you want them to.

  19. I've had coaches tell me that this year has been even more difficult because last year the protocols were ramped up so high. This year, it's more difficult to tell who has it, who has been vaccinated, etc. I can only imagine what coaching staffs and athletic departments are going through. One coach told me, we're just hoping to get to tomorrow to play on Friday.

  20. Totally bummed about Norm McDonald’s passing. He was likely my favorite comedian. He did some funny stuff early during COVID (the Bat Song and a stand up gig somewhere in LA which had a COVID-apocalyptic tilt). Hugely respected by other comics…often referred to as a “comic’s comic”.

  21. I can somewhat attest to this, but it's way beyond just sports. My boys play football and baseball as well as travel baseball. My daughter plays volleyball. In addition, there's also church activities that they are involved in including altar server and youth groups. My wife and I spend so much time driving kids back and forth to events and then showing up for support stuff like working concessions, or breakfasts, etc. I had signed up to play slow-pitch softball for the men's league at church, but ended up having to back out between managing the practices, weekday games, and tournaments. One of the things that I tended to do that helped me do some physical activity was coaching and, in that, I was able to merge community service, sharing an activity with my kids, and getting a little exercise too. My situation might be a bit different from some folks in that I have five kids, so even if I'm just spending a half hour per kid driving folks back and forth, I burn 2 1/2 hours just playing chauffeur ... add into that that I rarely get to just go from one place to the next and I end up with pockets of 15 minutes here and 20 minutes there and a half hour there of time where I can get anything done waiting for the next pick-up/drop-off to happen and I end up burning 3 hours or more just driving around each day. I always tell my kids that my calendar would be so clear that I wouldn't know what to do with all the spare time if I didn't have their schedules clogging up mine. 😀

  24. Very random, but just an observation I made recently. First, I want to preface that I hope there are some viewers/guests to this thread that would consider creating an account to provide their own thoughts and opinions on the NLC. I say that because outside of a handful of users making posts, this thread is CRICKETS! However... even though there are few posting, this thread still gets a lot of views! Check this out. As of me writing this post: NLC - 2021 45 replies - 5.5k views Let's compare that to some other threads with a similar number of replies: Snider 2021 60 replies - 2k views New Pal headed back to 4A? 53 replies - 3.4k views Hoosier Conference 48 replies - 3.6k views Bishop Chatard at Cathedral 44 replies - 2.5k views Merrillville 41 replies - 1.5k views As you can see, we have plenty of people stopping by to check out what is being written about the NLC. Would love to see some more of those who are viewing give their own inputs 😄 Don't be afraid, we won't bite

  25. As Friday night draws closer, I had some thoughts to share with the WRC brethren. Better entertainment for your Friday night: A WRC football game or gambling at the local cock fight? Also I think they should strap spider monkeys to the greyhounds that race at the dog tracks. A dog can only be the winner if the spider monkey jockey stays upright till the end. Is it safe to try to domesticate coyotes? Who wins in a fight between 10 fighting cocks and 1 coyote?

  28. Linton isn't going to take anyone lightly. The Miners are still just getting everything together. The coaches are working to get the right people in the right spots. Also they haven't had a full squad the last two games. I think they will be close to full strength this Friday, although a couple are still out with injury. The potential is there for lots of improvement. As for the ending of the Southridge series, I'm not sure who dropped whom. I rather think it was a mutual agreement.

  29. There are a few things at play here. Fewer kids drive than in years past; so getting to and from events is difficult. We have a number of students who will hang out at a fast food place or gas station near the school after school lets out on Friday, in order to be able to go to a game. Not many are interested in that. In large urban areas, you get kids from different parts of town attending schools in communities where they don't live or have little to no connection to. A long stretch of little to no success for a program. More kids have jobs; including kids that play a sport. It is common for kids to miss practice because they have to work....have even seen kids miss games because they have to work. Many that do work are helping pay the bills in the home. If they are not working, they have to be home to watch younger siblings so a parent can work jobs with hours after school. What last season taught many, including adults, is that there are other things to do on Friday nights. Other distractions. As Bash stated, some kids would prefer the competition the gaming world provides than actually doing the physical work. That also keeps some from just attending as fans. As far as communities where participation is high for fans as well as numbers in the program; several things factor into that as well. Many current students are 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th generation to attend the same school. Along those lines; communities with just one high school often see better numbers in programs and attendance at games. More kids are able to drive or get to games. Peer pressure.....in smaller communities; if a kid wants to hang out with his friends, he does what they do. That may mean being on a team. At the very least, it means go to the game. Program tradition, or even a run of recent success.

  32. Because the Covid vaccine isn't really a vaccine. Let's look at the commonly held definition of the word: https://www.dictionary.com/browse/vaccine Yet now we know this vaccine does not confer immunity. Look at the statistics in Israel where something like 80% of the population has been "vaccinated", new covid infections of "vaccinated" individuals have skyrocketed. Yes, the "vaccination" will greatly reduce the effects of the virus should you still contract it, but it doesn't "confer immunity". It's really just a strong therapeutic.

  33. I was wondering the same Muda....people glued to their phones and technology. It would seem so many would rather argue/debate from their couch and simulate activities, vs. actually doing and spending time with people, actually looking them in the eyes before spouting and listening to their perspectives, experiences, etc.

  34. I would hear stories about my grandparents being apart of bowling leagues, lodges, women’s clubs, and many social clubs. I was talking about this the other day with a friend how are generation is not involved in social outings like past generations. You’re absolutely right, we are definitely more insular.

  36. Yes, the workload for teachers really don't give them the time. My wife has been in system for 25+ years and it is to the point of being unbearable now. She is in low 50's and wants out. Politics in local system and lack of state support is reason.

  37. This is a live ball foul. Play continues. After the down ends the defense has the option of the result of the play, or 5 yd. penalty from the previous spot and replay the down. Now, if this is a case where a man in motion suddenly cuts sharply toward the line of scrimmage just prior to the snap, there is a school of thought that treats this as a false start, since what happens is essentially the man in motion starts the play before the ball is snapped. In that case, it’s a dead ball foul. Blow the whistle immediately and penalize 5 yds.

  38. Let me clarify, a long trip is beneficial when the game isn't a blowout. The series is 1-1 that past 2 years. That's beneficial in my book.
