  2. Heard a comment before the game from a friend of a friend of someone on the MD coaching staff that going in to the game, MD felt they could move the ball on Andrean Defense and put some points on the board but was uncertain about stopping Bowen. They had some ideas but so did all the other teams Bowen ran over during the season. It seemed to me watching from the stands that very little Andrean did on offense surprised Mater Dei. Lots of key defensive stops on 3rd & 4th down kept sending Andrean offense to the sidelines. On offense, MD was able to run enough with Pierre to eat the clock and keep DBs honest on pass routes. Good game plan and near flawless execution by Mater Dei allowed them to come out on top.

  3. I'm technically a boomer and I'm not happy about it. I was born over 19 years after VJ day! I wasn't created by a post-war celebration. I was more "let's put up the Christmas tree and drink a few beers".

  4. Before this thread is completely out of control...... This Center Grove team played dominant football from regionals on. No one at any point in the season played any better. Brownsburg was a worthy #1, and HSE deserved the spot by knocking off the 'Dogs. But neither of these teams during the regular season were as good as playoff CG. Play like you've been there.... and that's what CG has done. Congrats to the Trojans!

  9. No one has been a bigger and more consistent critic of the coaches’ vote process, and its lack of useful information that officials can use to get better, than I have, even though my crew was very successful under the system. Whether you wait 7 minutes or 7 weeks to get your results, they tell you nothing useful. I’m more empathetic to your situation than you know.

  14. Congratulations to Carroll (FW) on a terrific season. Congratulations to Center Grove on what I would call one of their more impressive seasons. I took a lot of guff for stating that I thought CG would handle Carroll rather easily. It is what it is I only call it as I see it, with Carroll (FW) having that close of a game with Laf. Jeff. (whom Cathedral had beaten rather handily) I felt Center Grove would have no problem with Carroll. It had nothing to do with making the safe pick that didn't even come into my thought process. No matter what HSE was built up to be, they deserved the #1 ranking because they actually beat the #1 team in the regular season. I still am adamant I believe HSE would have lost to Brownsburg by 2 or 3 TD's had Brownsburg's QB (Whitaker) not been injured before halftime and sat the entire half. That being said regardless HSE nor Brownsburg were playing at CG level they had during the playoffs. I know some wanted to bring up CG having a close game with Franklin Central, well FC had a solid defense and their Head Coach Jason West is VERY familiar with CG having coached against them several years at WC. I will say Coach Moore is the ultimate motivator. He stated one thing himself when he stated Center Grove never was ranked #1 this year. They were the defending State Champs yet never were ranked #1 even when their lone loss at one point was to Louisville Kentucky. You better believe Coach Moore likely motivated his team throughout by using this. He also has been on record as saying they needed the loss to Cathedral to use as a learning tool and motivation. Not just the loss itself but likely the way they lost in a comeback 4th quarter fashion. Another motivational tool to make himself, his coaches, and his players better. One of the more impressive seasons by Coach Moore and his staff and coaching their players to be better. BTW what a call and decision to move Thomeson (SP?) from defense to RB after the loss of Wheat. While Coyle may have been a focus, he totally dominated that game. Last but not least for future reference players getting hurt has nothing to do with opposing team just hits harder. I truly hate that thinking. Injuries happen and can happen in a multitude of ways which has nothing to do with the physicality or hitting of an opposing team. Injuries can be freak accidents to be honest.

  17. I have great admiration for the Chatard program. Seen them numerous times over the years, a few of them up close and personal. Never seen them give anything but an all out effort. Always well coached. Consistently punch above their weight. Take on all comers. And their “standard” is nothing less than excellence. Congratulations to them!

  22. Are you suggesting that the IHSAA post the 'rankings' prior (or in conjunction with) the beginning of the tournament? If you have noticed, the past 2 seasons the IHSAA has removed the ability to see who was awarded games in the tournament in FB. I assume that this was due to multiple inquiries as to who/what/where/why crews were given assignments; And they were tired of dealing with it on Meridian Street. Every season, I can "plan" on receiving a negative vote from at least 2 schools, for NO REASON whatsoever other than spite. I am fully aware of who they are. Of course the occasional 3 pops up, and it usually is "Well they did our Sectional"...completely oblivious as to how the ranking system works. But so it is. .I have no idea of how information is presently conveyed via Meridian Street to their member schools as to 'how they should evaluate/vote for crews. But I do know a few years back at an IHSAA sponsored conference; To an official we were floored at the rational and utter randomness of how schools were voting. It was astounding in its simplicity of an evaluation for crews. The IHSAA schools adminstrators present had no standard way of anything close to an accurate way of anything that could be considered an 'evaluation'.

  23. Yes, TV stations in other regions could purchase the rights to also broadcast the games from Bally.

  24. I agree totally. I remember when Chuck was a student at Elkhart Central in the 80's. He used to call into a local weekly sports talk show and made no secret that he wanted to become a broadcaster and he has become a very good one.

  26. So it should have been closer to the endzone? As long as the ball itself didn't cross the goalline, in NFHS, that is still not a touchback.

  27. Congrats to East Central; definitely worthy to be called 2022 state champs. Gotta think they will be one of the favorites to win it all next year as well. Don't know what 4A north needs to do to close the gap but I hope my Cougars are part of that solution. 4A south has been on a different level lately with New Pal, Roncalli, and East Central being some of the best programs in the state outside of Center Grove and Cathedral, sprinkle in an Evansville team emerging every year and it's a meat grinder to make it to Indy. Again congrats to the trojans on their title yesterday; much deserved.

  29. This is the feeling I have living in the northern part of the state, as well. There is no one in the Bally Sports Indiana service area that is paying that much per month for that cable channel. The IHSAA is well-aware that Bally Sports Indiana doesn't reach into the north, or else they wouldn't have allowed WHME to air the games for all those years. So, basically, they are punishing people in the northern -- and as I read this, the southern part -- of the state. It truly is an unequitable situation. Not to mention, you are completely missing the opportunity to get the casual viewer who might come past your game and see your product for a while I get the fact that the IHSAA controls the rights and can do what they want with them. But to run the media campaign "this is your IHSAA"? Apparently, that's only true in the markets that receive Bally Sports Indiana.

  32. I'm not saying the enforcement of uniform rules is tied to lack of advancement. My biggest problem is waiting for feedback from the IHSAA on what our school scores were and who voted. We will get it in a couple of weeks, when many officials are involved with winter sports, the last football game was 7 weeks ago, you have an idea what schools voted how, and when you try to address scores, it gets lost in everything that has happened in the last 7 weeks. So you start thinking, it would be nice going through a football season without worrying about the politics of playoff assignment. When the first playoff games are awarded, that is when we need our crew info. Bob, I know you mean well, but your thoughts on all of this are based on a highly successful career of football officiating. I know you try to see things at the other end of the seesaw, but other people don't always have empathy for the folk down here.

  34. In several different threads, as well as in conversations, the terms “personal foul” and “unsportsmanlike conduct” are sometimes confused, or even used interchangeably. A lot of people may say that’s not a big deal, both are 15 yd. penalties, so it doesn’t really matter what you call it. I beg to differ. Since there can be significant differences in both enforcement and disciplinary consequences between the two fouls, it is really important to get the right foul called. Personal fouls are contact fouls. They must involve one of 3 types of forcible contact: excessive (e.g., body slamming a runner who has clearly been stopped), unnecessary (e.g., the cheap block 20 yds. behind the play), or a type of contact illegal by rule (e.g., grabbing the facemask, horse collar). Personal foul penalties can be enforced from the previous spot, the succeeding spot, the end of the run, or the spot of the foul, depending on who committed the foul, where and when it was committed, status of the ball, and other factors. Unlike basketball, you don’t “foul out” of a football game because you’ve accumulated a certain number of personal fouls. Disqualification occurs only if a personal foul is deemed “flagrant,” i.e., “a foul so severe or extreme that it places an opponent in danger of serious injury…” All personal fouls are signaled using Signal 38. If the foul occurred while the ball was dead, Signal 38 is preceded by Signal 7. If the personal foul involved a prohibited type of contact, the signal sequence ends with the signal for the particular type of prohibited contact, e.g., Signal 25 (horse collar), Signal 26 (blindside block). Unsportsmanlike conduct is a non contact foul. It covers a multitude of sins, from taunting, to excessive celebrations, to bad behavior toward the officials. Regardless of when, where, or by whom a USC foul is committed, it is enforced like a dead ball foul, i.e., enforcement is from the succeeding spot. Any player or non-player who accumulates two USC fouls is automatically disqualified. If it’s a coach, he must leave the playing area and have no contact with the team for the remainder of the contest. The IHSAA also enforces a 1 week suspension of anyone so disqualified. The officials are required to turn in a written report to the IHSAA of any incident in which a player is disqualified or a member of the coaching staff, administration, etc., is assessed a USC foul. Because all USC fouls are penalized as dead ball fouls, it is not necessary to precede the unsportsmanlike conduct signal (Signal 27) with the dead ball signal (Signal 7). I’ve included a link to the NF Football Signals Guide. https://www.nfhs.org/media/4016213/2022-nfhs-official-football-signals-final-3-9-22.pdf

  36. A) I live in Seymour, brilliant sleuthing there Sherlock since it’s in my bio. B) Being a proud graduate of Seymour High School I can form sentences that communicate my thoughts and ideas with others even when I’m drunk sitting in my mother’s basement. C) I have no clue when Seymour’s last trip to the regional was, you’re obviously more of a fan than I. D) The breakfast rush is about to start you probably need to get off your phone and get the drink station cleaned up. E) With all this knowledge about me I figured you’d be aware that I’m not a boomer.

  38. And I can also talk about a couple other titles lost by CG (one in OT) by a combined total of 6 points that could have easily went the other way. But they didn’t. Just like last didn’t end with a loss. A young man made a clutch play near the end. How about we celebrate the accomplishment?? Not sure where you were going with your comment to diminish , but it’s disappointing and a tad troublesome.

  40. Looks like the hit that Tyquan Hammock put on Garrett Meador. I don't even think targeting existed back then.
    1 point
  41. Funny you should ask that. There is no mandatory disqualification for targeting in high school like there is in NCAA. However, a targeting foul where contact is initiated with a helmet above the shoulders of a defenseless player can be a candidate for a flagrant foul, resulting in disqualification. I was the observer on this game, and I discussed this very question with the crew after the game. After a thorough discussion, we all agreed that the hit, although there was a lot of contact, should not have been considered “flagrant.” So, IMO the crew got it exactly right … except the Referee gave the personal foul signal (#38), but omitted the signal for targeting (#24).

  42. -Different discussion for a different day, but the Pacers have way too much pull over Indy media for a mediocre franchise. The state football finals in November and opening week Cardinals games in April. Two things I would much rather watch than regular season NBA games. Yet they get preempted every time.

  46. What adult human being with the word “dad” in his screen name (meaning he has children of his own) gets on a high school message board and attempts to take a dump on a group of 15 to 18 year old kids hours after their biggest win of the year and possibly their greatest athletic accomplishment of their lifetime? Yeah, I said it. Loser.
