  1. Jerry is a very kind and generous person. I know he spent time over the years with my young broadcasters walking them through his notes and his research for games. Jerry's one of the few people who can still make me starstruck. He may have lost a step or two, but that's a step or two no one else had.

  2. Looks like you are expecting Center Grove to join the HCC. Bold prediction, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off.

  4. I think Hansen is the winner, but I’m surprised no one has mentioned Micah Coyle from Center Grove. Carries-306 Yards-2072, AVG-6.8, TD-22, and his team won the state championship.

  5. Yet another example of why a two year cycle is stupid. If SF points is going to be the system, it needs to be AT LEAST 3...preferably 4+. You could reclassify by enrollment every 2 years, and apply SF points every 4 (or even a rolling 4 year cycle).

  7. Actually, Jerry was first a DJ at WIFE radio when they first went on the air, and that was 1963. Jerry is from Sullivan, IN, and often has talked about when he was driving up to Indy for the job, he found out that his DJ name would be Jack Sunday. He has to be closing in on 80 years old, if not already there. Jerry also was the person who introduced The Beatles for their first of two shows during the 1964 Indiana State Fair. He was hired in 2017 to be the Pacers PA announcer after long time PA guy Reb Porter (another old WIFE DJ) retired. I never was at one of his games, but I heard it didn't go well. He was replaced the following season. The link below is about 2 minutes, starting with Jerry's introduction of the group.

  9. I have long wondered why the state final broadcast doesn't bring in the folks who have covered the team involved all year to the broadcast. Perhaps not as the main guy, the main play by play guy, but to add the knowledge of what the team does...who is who.. because I am amazed at how many times the wrong kid is named... and I know mistakes happen...and they don't really have much time to dive and research a whole season's worth of games. I know I'd much rather hear the voice of someone who really understands who the team counts on, who gets it done and what a team is about. I'd love a 3 man team....one from both sides and a neutral host.

  10. I’m a bit of a homer, and I realize he missed 2 games. But I think Porter Rode got screwed by not being 2nd team.

  13. Yep and a team from the same conference as Prairie Ridge ( in Cary Grove) upset that huge East St. Louis team last year. I would like to see the Free and Reduced lunch statistics between the 2 teams (since that seems to be a hot topic here on the GID).

  17. That’s definitely not me. And I can’t confirm or deny clacks I had heard all year that when the season was over he was going to Hobart or merrillville. Because he wasn’t a fan of the Andrean school system and he didn’t wanna start over as a senior with low expectations. At least that comes from the parents that know his family that are at merrillville. If he comes great. If he goes to Hobart great. The kid is a phenomenal athlete with great hands

  18. They can compete for sure...but there are less of them, so classification based on enrollment alone doesn't work.

  19. They played Ohio State close for a half, remember? August 2020: "Indiana is the biggest threat to Ohio State in the Big Ten East." Since that claim by many media members, the Hoosiers have gone 2-16 in Big Ten play.

  21. Agreed 100% it wasn't too long ago that you had Chatard (with Coach Lorenzano) and Roncalli (with Coach Scifres) that ran the ball until you stopped it and occasionally threw a pass. I still have visions of the Roncalli power toss that they would run at you relentlessly with 6 different ways to block it! They were not the only teams with primary run offense. Warren Central under Kevin Wright (talk about a dominant run game just ask @BobrefI think Desmond Tardy extended his crews officiating career by 3 years keeping them in shape against Penn), Sheridan was run heavy, Monrovia (with the belly offense with Coach Hutchins he had a ton of experience with that offense from Coach Harpold), Center Grove (Coach Moore's Wing T it's only been recently they have been throwing the ball around a bit more). Modern offense is definitely the way of spread offense and run pass option. Being able to throw the ball is great some years, when the weather gets bad in October and November some years running the ball is a must. Snow and rain are great to have a run game, but really this year we had a couple of tournament dates where the wind didn't lend well to the passing teams (Regionals and Semi-State). In some cases sticking with a run game would have benefited teams that lost in the Semi-State. Now when you get into Lucas Oil with perfect weather you can have both passing and running, but most teams will just stick with what got them there.

  22. No, not at all, and thank you. Still a lot of buzz around town, proud of the team. No good scouting report until you see which up and comers grow/mature over the off season. Obviously, Bennett should see the majority of carries and I do think Ahaus will throw more....current players coming back and some JV talent should give our QB some targets to throw to.....but we'll let the run set up those pass plays first. Rumor has it the STC was last seen westbound and down on I-70, loaded up and....well, just loaded. Destination St. Louis and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. Other rumors have him renting a back room at Jiggles for a few nights. I cannot confirm or deny either of these rumors, or any others that might be out there.

  23. I just love that your argument is basically "35-50% of kids in public school are turds, therefore, the kids that are not turds cant compete."

  24. As mentioned, Lburg graduated an "incredibly talented QB/receiver duo just last year". Yoon, the QB part of that duo threw for 9115 yards and 95 TD's over his HS career so there are playbooks in the coaching office that have a few pass plays in them. I also like mentioning that Yoon ran for 3649 yards and 51 TD's because those are nice complimentary numbers for a throwing QB at any level. I thought LBurg may try and pass the ball more this year but the Tigers were looking at a new starting QB, a completely new offense, majority of the O-line as first year starters....they didn't know what they had on offense. We already knew RB Bennett was good but he missed games earlier in the season with an injury so I'm guessing the coaching staff was just trying to win games. RB Witte really didn't start running the ball outside of some wildcat short yardage situations until the end of the regular season and start of the playoffs. As far as run heavy, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" I guess. The run heavy game plans got the Tigers to the state finals and after three quarters, they were still sniffing at a championship. If anyone didn't notice, Chatard has a damn good football with gamers and playmakers that, for those first six minutes of the fourth quarter, made championship winning plays. RB Bennett is back next year so LBurg will still be run first. QB Ahaus has no problem with arm strength and it looks like there's WR talent available for next year so with a year a varsity experience under his belt, I think LBurg will throw the ball more next year. I know South Dearborn, Batesville, and others will have something to say about it, but LBurg would love to battle Heritage Hills, Southridge, and/or Gibson Southern again for a chance to win those blue ribbons next year.

  25. JB is a legend around Indy. He originally was a DJ at WIRE radio 1430 am in the '60's. Then he was the 1st radio voice of the Pacers. He has called many championship games at every level. But, he should be put out to pasture.

  26. I would contend that, while there may be a couple of folks that might be chapped, the vast majority basically take the mindset that Chatard has for most of their seasons, "Tell us where to play and that's what we'll do, play." This is also the same that most teams that have been SF'd do. Chatard takes each season as it comes and realizes that, when you take each season as the hand that you've been dealt and push to make it the best, regardless of conditions, eventually you get to where you can be and want to be. Pioneer did it and didn't complain when the Kiser era was over and they were still taking their lumps in 2A. Scecina did it when they were the poster team for SF as the only team to be SF'd to a higher level without earning a blue ring for the effort. Cathedral has yo-yo'd and got beat up in 6A to only work their way through and become a more permanent fixture above their enrollment level. I conjecture that schools like Chatard realize that, yes, they can take advantage of a seasonal or yearly situation, but that organic tends to be more long-lived. Chatard will eventually end up more permanently outside of 3A, but like weightlifting, you are better off building the mass organically over time rather than rushing it for short-term satisfaction. Chatard will likely still be in the mix for 4A in a decade too. Again, the mantra of the SF'd tends to be fairly pragmatic: "Just tell us where to play."
