  3. 46 years at Scecina as an assistant and head coach...quite an impressive run. He was an assistant coach there for all 5 of my brothers. The last of my brothers graduated in 1982; probably the most infamous class in Scecina history. 😄 Coach Hurrle is a class act, and so many have been blessed to be on his teams and in his classrooms. Best of luck Coach Hurrle in your retirement. https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/high-school/2024/03/14/indiana-high-school-football-coaching-legend-ott-hurrle-retires-scecina-memorial-ihsaa/72972519007/

  4. Coach Hurrle is definitely one of the good guys and truly a legend in the coaching ranks. His years of service have meant so much for the school and the east side of Indianapolis. He will be missed but wish him the best in his well deserved retirement. Ott was a few years ahead of me at Scecina so I didn’t play for him but two of my brothers did (75 & 76). Two of my sons played for him, one was a sophmore on the 94 team that was arguably their best team. They were the last team to beat Roncalli and unfortunately lost their running back (Donald Winston) to an injury in the semi state game. Lost that game by one as the second attempt of the point after was botched, the first one was good but flag was thrown late for an equipment infraction (mouthpiece wasn’t in on a lineman). The story for that experience was always something I marveled at as the holder talked about his experience at the senior retreats for the next couple of years. Great guy and highly successful. Coach left the next year and unfortunately my son suffered thru a winless senior year. The other son was on the state losses as a sophmore and junior. (I know 20 years apart as I had kids in there for 20 out of 21 straight years. 🤓 ) They were the team that was moved up for being to successful when they never won a championship. That term has always baffled me as you look back at that move when it happened. It was an overtime game in the semi state against Linton. Scecina kicked a field goal to go up 3. Linton takes it to fourth and goal from the one. Could have kicked the field goal but decided to go for the win. So if they score they go to state and Scecina stays in 1A and has a good shot at state the next year. If they stop them on one play they are deemed to successful. Got to admit that play was pretty awesome. Now I have a grandson that played as a freshman on the varsity team. It was a little scary as he was only about 115lbs. His first interaction with Coach Hurrle was hilarious in films after his first catch. Scored a couple of touchdowns and had a great year. The thing is that anyone involved with this program thru the Hurrle years could give you stories that would reflect the same feelings. He coached football but developed character. Job Well Done Coach and Enjoy your retirement

  5. IHSAA calls it "unique," which is laughable. There's a reason only one state does it this way, because it's really kind of stupid. If the Brownsburg/Ben Davis game didn't open eyes, than nothing will. What would Texas, California, Georgia, or Ohio say if they were told, "by the way, the two best teams in the state are going to meet in the first round." They'd declare lunacy. Would these same people who voted against seeding vote for a blind draw for the college football playoff? We all know the answer to that. Kudos to Bob Gaddis for his politically correct response.

  6. My 2 cents: I first saw Westfield when they came up to play Merrillville in the semistate in November, 2020. Before the game even started, I knew Merrillville was in trouble. Even in the pregame, you could see Westfield was extremely well-organized and disciplined. And that’s the way they played. Not extraordinarily athletic, but no missed assignments, no bad body language, no stupid penalties. Their sideline ran as smoothly as I’ve ever seen in a great big game on the road. In that regard, I felt they were comparable to Center Grove. In my view, these are the signs of a very well-coached team: discipline and execution. In the times I’ve seen them after that, same thing.

  7. Coach Amstutz is one of the best underrated coaches in the state. Made me always feel like I was unprepared and was an idiot. 😀 He is a TREMONDOUS coach, very big shoes to fill. One of the BEST I have ever been around.

  11. why? there are some years where you can speculate some about a few of the larger class champions (mainly 4/5 being able to compete in a one off with the champion of 6a) unless ur putting all classes together for a gigantic tournament to find out who the real champion is i don't see the point in making one team of high schoolers state champions and everyone else class champions based on where they grew up

  13. I believe this is the “equity” I am always hearing about modern education. Punish the high end students/programs to cater to the low performing ones. Pretty soon we are going to have a “redistribution” of accomplishments and Brownsburg is going to have to forfeit 3 of their wins and give them to Pike so that no one’s feelings get hurt and everyone can tout their “accomplishments.”

  16. Man, I despise politics with a passion, but the right wing, extremist, attitude of the IHSAA is very troubling and reeks of the good old boy network. How many out of touch old fools does it take to use just a tad bit of common sense and seed a tournament?

  17. The Brownsburg and Ben Davis game of 2023 (if there already wasn't a better example) SHOULD have been the eye opener. Unless you're living under a rock (which apparently some of the powers that be are doing). Bob's a great guy and I'm glad I (along with all of you) have the reading ability to know what Bob really means/ wants to say here. Lol

  18. I liken this to people wanting a national football tournament, because HS kids need to be playing an NFL length season I guess. The goal of every HS team is to win a state championship. They’ve done that when they won their class, there’s nothing more to play for. The goal has been achieved. Now we’re going to have another six team bracket so a couple of over top idiot dads can have bragging rights? I’m sure you guys will want to seed it as well, so we’d have CG v Tiny School that no one from CG has ever heard of. What the hell would entice Tiny school that no one from CG has ever heard to even want to play this game? It’s stupid.

  20. Is this really what some people in big schools worry about? Does it eat away at your person every time a 1A champion is crowned? I mean, find something worthwhile to worry about in life. Sheesh. Oh, and they already do this. Class 1A State Champion Class 2A State Champion, etc.

  21. When it comes to athletics, we all know that it's not "all about the kids" in most cases (yes, there are outliers). It's all about the egos. Anyone who thinks differently is just kidding themselves.

  26. IHSAA make these changes now: 1. Adjust brackets to 32 in 6A and 1A, then split 5A - 2A with 61-64 schools in each. 2. Seed the Sectionals. Either complete seed or I’d be happy with seed top 2 and blind draw on the others as someone suggested earlier. 3. Neutral Site Semi State games 4. Keep LOS as home for all Championship games. Thats all. Too much to ask?

  29. East Noble has an Assistant AD--Brandon Durnell, the varsity basketball coach. They also have an athletic secretary. They probably could have allowed Amstutz to continue to serve in both roles if that was desired at the corporation level.

  31. Good points. Expanding on that: In the past, for a team up north to win the large division state title, you just had to be better than Carmel, Ben Davis, and Warren Central. You basically had two northern teams, Penn and Snider, competing with those three. Now you have Center Grove, Brownsburg, Hamilton Southeastern, Fishers, Westfield, Cathedral, and Avon. That's ten powerful programs for the north to contend with. Ten years ago, with Snider bumping down, all that was left was Penn............good luck with that. Fast forward to 2024 with Snider bumping back up, now it's 4 vs 10, with the inclusion of Carroll and Crown Point. The odds are still stacked against the north. There won't be a balance of power until Homestead, Lake Central, and Elkhart up their game.

  34. Figured I'll get my WW preview out of the way. May do Valley to my best abilities later in summer. Going into year 4 of Lowery and going into what seems to be a transition year after the loss of quite a few seniors they will look to build and get the foundation settled. Last yr around week 6 they went full flexbone offense after running a power I version for a year and a half Offense- New QB, WRs, 2 OL, and a RB or 2 are expected to be figured out over the summer. I expect SO Holden Russell to start under center after running the JV offense last year. While not as fast as Chase he may be or become a better passer. This will be his 3rd offense in 3 years. JR High he was in a spread passing and then last year ran that previous Power I. I'm sure alot of the same concepts will carry over so the transition could be minimal. Back up QB is a mystery. Incoming freshman Jent Tankersly ran the 8th grade and both back up QBs from last year also graduated. Im sure they will find and older kid to learn incase holden goes down. (I'd guess RB/K/LB Gavin Hunt). At RB they lose Greyson McCoy who also may have been best WR. SR Hudson Cress and SR Tyler Miller return. Cress is small and shifty but lined up mostly at FB but did play SB as a freshman when they tried a flexbone/Shotgun marriage that led to divorce. Miller played TE as a sophomore and moved to RB last year but didn't see a ton of carries. He may move back to TE if they feel SO Jamesdon Collier is ready for a decent role. I'd expect JR Hunt to start after coming over from Salem for his sophomore yr. In the event the JV gets some varsity time I'd expect incoming freshman Xander McPheeters to get in. OL last year went through 3 LTs before season ended. 1 returns so Collin Hasty may get first crack to keep it. They return JR Jack Armstrong (RT), JR Rolondo Brookover (C), and SR Alex Houchins (G). The guard to replace is JG Cruz. JR Zach McCutcheon started at C for JV and maybe Brookover slides over or he gets moved. Could also be SO Gavin Clunie (6'2 250ish). Be a competition im sure. WRs is a mystery to me. Titan Williams, Jaxon Cambron, and McCoy all graduated. I'd say JR Hayden Morrow and SR Jaden Griffith start off but I'd keep an eye on SO Colton Brown. He has a good report with Russell and looked good on JV. Defensively you'll see alot of the same kids but more rotations. I feel they have a slew of LBs who can play/rotate so I'd expect a 3-4/3-5 type of alignment. SO Wyatt Wallace started at LB as a freshman in Sectional loss to Valley so I expect him to get good time along with returning Armstrong, Miller, and Hunt. SO Tristan Brown and JR Brennan Sears also could see some time. Finding some DL who can rotate in will be key and quite a bit of change in the secondary too. Morrow did start a few games at safety. Overall this season could go any direction. Gaining strength is a must if they want to get back to competing for PLAC. Too many loses just getting the ball ran down their throats. Paoli, PC, Valley, and the Salem Collapse all games they just got beat up front. The defense was different then previous years with the 3 man line but having all the LBs off the line didn't work in games against power run teams. I think the Sophmore class is good. The freshman class was around .500 in JR high but have some pieces that may factor in down the road. I didn't project guys who missed alot of time last year (Alex Willams, IzIah Dennis, and Landon Holloway) so if they play/are ready that'll give more bodies. Team is young (8 seniors) and lots of new starters at key spots so could be a rough season. Overall numbers continue to improve over last 3 to 4 years. When Lowery took over he had about 32 on roster and last year was around 45. JR High played a 7th and 8th grade team last year for first time in a long time and Youth league had 70+ and 4 teams over 4 grades. Be an interesting season for sure and im sure will have plenty of ups and downs

  36. Warsaw as well! The Tigers travel down to face the Warren Central Warriors in Week 2 on August 30th. That's a huge pickup for them. I am pretty sure after this home and home with Warren Central, the Tigers then have a home and home with Ben Davis and FW Snider on the books in coming years.

  37. Muda you’ve been screaming for over a decade that Frankfort should leave the Sagamore, and now that they have you are complaining about that. After 20 years of listening to you I think it might actually be possible that you just like to complain, and that you dont actually care about the issues you rage against. 😜
