The majority of high school AD’s do not have quality or good high school football programs. For those ADs at those schools, it was an easy no brainer vote to turn it down. They prefer the random draw because they do not want to get stuck playing the best seeds and teams each and every year. It’s not right, it’ll be very difficult to ever get past this ancient random draw rule.

The HCC did not want another schedule against all conference teams. They had that back when the three Lafayette schools, pre Franklin Central, were in the conference.
Could’ve gone with 7 games and just rotate each year. Should’ve been voted in.

Westfield has another "cupcake" schedule 🙂
Opening game at Center Grove
Week 2 home against Carmel
Then that always easy HCC schedule
Should’ve been the entire HCC. HCC schools did not want to vote CG or Carmel in. This is what it would have looked like if a 9 game schedule would have been voted on.

More money. Less pressure. Really good football coach he was and a great program he was building.

Do you happen to know why?
Nope. Heard through the grapevines from a couple head coaches and assistants from within the MIC.

Possibly. It would be a tough sell for the Terre Haute schools. They would be a competitive fit in most sports but the distance to Terre Haute is a significant obstacle to membership in almost any conference.
When it was first announced that Harrison and McCutcheon were out of the NCC, I thought they could fit well in Conference Indiana. Adding those two schools would either save the conference or be the final step to kill it. Ignoring geography, it would have made some sense.
Southport 2368 Columbus North 2267 Harrison 2169 McCutcheon 1786 Bloomington South 1656 Terre Haute South 1609 Bloomington North 1558 Terre Haute North 1467 I think Southport wants to be in the MIC, and maybe Columbus North goes with them to get in together. Columbus could join the Hoosier Hills instead if they can be in the same conference as Columbus East. Not sure what the Bloomington schools do. Maybe try to get into the Mid-State or Hoosier Hills. The Terre Haute schools would fill in the enrollment gap between the members of the Sagamore if they joined (along with West Lafayette).
Harrison 2169 McCutcheon 1786 Terre Haute South 1609 Terre Haute North 1467 Lebanon 1033 Danville 820 West Lafayette 750 Tri-West 606 Southport was offered a spot in the MIC within the last school year and turned it down.

My best guess at 5A Sectional assignments. A lot of them are pretty easy, but a few outliers are going to make things interesting.
OBVIOUS
Sectional 9: Hammond Central, Hammond Morton, Merrillville, Munster
Sectional 10: Chesterton, LaPorte, Michigan City, Valparaiso
Sectional 11: Concord, Goshen, SB Adams, Warsaw
MAYBE?
Sectional 12: FW North, Kokomo, Lafayette Jefferson, McCutcheon
Down in 5A South is where things get a little weird. there are a lot of obvious 2-team groupings, but then what other 2-teams do they pair up with? My best guess will be:
MAYBE?
Sectional 13: Anderson, East Central, Franklin, Whiteland
Sectional 14: Decatur Central, Plainfield, Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South
OBVIOUS (Only because they are the same as the last cylce)
Sectional 15: Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Columbus East, Seymour
Sectional 16: Castle, Evansville North, Floyd Central, New Albany5A south:
Plainfield, Decatur central, Whiteland, Franklin
Anderson, East Central, Seymour, Columbus East
terre haute n, terre haute s, Bloomington N, Bloomington S
Castle, Evansville N, Floyd, New Albany

I don't think football was the reason that most of these schools said "no" to CG....travel time in other sports with many weeknight events was the reason I heard more often. Remember it wasn't too long ago that all of the big 3 Lafayette schools were in the HCC. Travel time/cost was the reason they were given the boot.
I think most of the HCC schools would welcome the competition (and the gate money) from a CG regular season game.
Keep in mind HCC also voted down Carmel to join as well. Can’t blame that one on travel time. People tend to forget that. I think travel time is a poor excuse.

Could you see a coach from the Indy area coming up to go after this position? Or do you think it’ll come from the northern part of the state?

Indystar just put out an article about the upcoming enrollments. Enrollments will be released in the coming days. Can’t wait. However, they said it would be end of April before the sectional alignments are determined. Man that seems like a long time period to configure those.

I could see CG scheduling a long-distance road game for last week of season now that they moved the Cathedral game up. That week falls during their fall break so traveling to a Friday night game would not be an issue.
What is CG’s schedule? Nothing is posted on John Harrell. I doubt CG wants to travel real far every year. Nobody does. It’s high school

Agreed. Play Indiana teams. Or schools that relatively nearby. Traveling 7 hours or so to play a short high school football game…cmon. As a fan, I’d rather see OUR INDIANA schools play.
1 hour ago, JustRules said:For teams like Center Grove and Carmel who have to fill a schedule without the benefit of a conference it may be the only way they can find opponents. Center Grove is opening at home with a team from Baltimore. They had a hard time finding an opponent. This at least gives them more options.
Is Carmel still not playing CG?

I dunno - they have selected/requested to be in 5A for YEARS at this point. I'm not sure why they would want to drop to 4A now, but also, when they made the decision in the past, Merrillville, Valpariaso, and Warsaw were all in 6A the majority of that time. Now with those schools in 5A north, I think you might be right, they may look to go into 4A finally.
If Mishawaka stay in 5A... Sectionals likely look like this
Sectional 9: Hammond Central, Hammond Morton, Merrillville, MunsterSectional 10: Chesterton, LaPorte, Michigan City, Valparaiso
Sectional 11: SB Adams, Concord, Goshen, Mishawka
Sectional 12: Kokomo, Lafayette Jefferson, McCutcheon, Warsaw
5A south could go a number of different ways, but more liekly than not would be some combinantion of these groupings, but the below PAIRS would definitely be stuck together. There are a number of ways you could piece these sectionals together.
Anderson and East Central
Decatur Central and Plainfield
Terre Haute North and South
Bloomington North and South
Evansville North and Castle
Floyd Central and New Albany
Columbus East and Seymour
Whiteland and Franklin
However, if Mishawaka goes ahead and drops to 4A, you would just move Warsaw into their spot, and FW North Side would move up to 5A and into Warsaw's spot. Or you could interchange Warsaw and FW North Side I suppose.
Sectional 9: Hammond Central, Hammond Morton, Merrillville, Munster
Sectional 10: Chesterton, LaPorte, Michigan City, Valparaiso
Sectional 11: SB Adams, Concord, Goshen, Warsaw
Sectional 12: Kokomo, Lafayette Jefferson, McCutcheon, FW North Side
5A South if I had to bet..
Decatur Central, Plainfield, Whiteland, Franklin
Anderson, East Central, Columbus East, Seymour
Bloomington N, Bloomington S, Terre Haute N, Terre Haute S
Floyd Central, New Albany, Castle, Evansville N

I am betting they send Harrison to Sectional 1. I feel like there is precedent with sending Lafayette schools to "The Region". If that's the case, I'd see something like this
Sectional 1: Crown Point, Harrison, Lake Central, Portage
Sectional 2: Carroll, Elkhart, Penn, Snider (wow!)
Sectional 3: Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern, Homestead, Northrop
Sectional 4: Carmel, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville
This is what I’m thinking. As far as the South in 6A goes…should stay the same as these past 2 seasons.
Brownsburg, Avon, Pike, BD
North Central, LN, LC, Cathedral
Warren, Tech, Southport, Perry Meridian
Franklin Central, CG, Columbus North, Jeffersonville

To be “technical”…Zionsville is further south than Carmel.
Carmel sits on 131st (Main) st…Zionsville sits on what would be 121st if it went all the way thru. Both are further south than Westfield or Noblesville which both sit north of 32.
HSE & Fishers always go together based on IHSAA desire to bracket schools in same district together. They are both off of 126th on opposite sides of 69.
Of course IHSAA May decide to change things up and do something else for completely illogical reasons.🤷🏼♂️
I guess I get it, but I also don’t get it when always choosing to not split up schools from the same school district. Why would that be so illogical to send schools from the same district to 2 different sectionals. If it ever came down to it, and things were really based on north and south, why would it be such a a big deal to split schools in the same district up? Never fully understood why that is a priority of the IHSAA to keep district schools together.

That’s what I was told as well. However, have heard a few rumors that Carroll is backing out after 2024 and found another team.
2 hours ago, US31 said:Based on Snider and Laf Harrison (fairly confident assumption based on enrollement) moving up to 6A and Valpo being a "?"...is it possible for some big realignment in Sectionals 3 & 4?
Warsaw, Jeffersonville, Tech, and FW Northrop are currently the bottom of 6A...if the right two of those drop out, you have a possibility of 2 "North" schools dropping to the "South". I assume that would need to be Zionsville & Carmel, or HSE & Fishers.
I have a strong feeling at least one school from sectional 3 or 4 will go south next time. Zionsville seems to be the one more often lumped in BBurg/Avon in the past.
Any word on Whiteland enrollment? Have seen and heard many state that Whiteland is only a matter of time before reaching 6A status for enrollment. Not sure how close they are.

With Snider moving up to 6A, I would love to see Northrop take Snider’s spot in 5A and Snider take Northrop’s spot in 6A. If that is the case, it would be Snider, Homestead, HSE, and Fishers. Pretty good sectional in my opinion
If there are 2 or 3 moving up to 6A that fall in the North, then I believe as of the last numbers that the 2 or 3 that would move down would be from the North as well. This should not change too much as far as sectionals go. There might not be much change throughout.

Unsure as to why the 6A would change how they have been in the past…??? It’s the same schools with additions ones that slot right in in the north. Don’t see IHSAA switching sectionals up that much.
