  1. We'll now we are back to the point that if we could just put the top 2 teams in each sectional on the opposite sides of the bracket.....isn't this a very small change that everyone could live with?  Keeps "All In"....doesn't add qualification...yet stops a huge chunk of the "travesties" we see posted on social media after the drawing every year.

CoachMack's Crazy Idea includes 8 Classes and an Open/ Elite Division. The breakdown is below and includes how the playoff schedule would work.

Open/Elite Division: Best 16 Teams in the State. Almost all will come from 6A-8A (FW Dwenger and Indianapolis Roncalli are only below 5A Top 16 "threats," based on my "model," and their own historical success). A first round loss in "The Open" does not eliminate you from postseason play, you will be allowed to rejoin the postseason in the appropriate class from 6A-8A dependent upon your enrollment. Prep bowl allows this with any open slots left, despite the prep bowl not being an IHSA "Playoff."

8A: 16 Teams. Based on this year, there would have been 11 teams in 8A, and 5 open spots for Open Division 1st round losers, with the 5 largest enrollments (most, if not all would come from 8A anyways). Largest School = Carmel 5200, Smallest School = Indy Arsenal Tech 2500, Enrollment % Difference = 2.08%

7A: 32 Teams. Based on this year, there would have been 30 teams in 7A and 2 open spots for Open Division 1st round losers, with the 2nd and 3rd smallest enrollments. Largest School = Homestead 2408, Smallest School = Terre Haute South 1609, Enrollment % Difference = 1.5%

6A: 32 Teams. Based on this year, there would have been 31 teams in 6A and 1 open spot for Open Division 1st round losers with the smallest enrollment. Largest School = Franklin Community 1590, Smallest School = Columbia City 1162, Enrollment % Difference = 1.37%

    5A: 32 Teams. Largest School = Indianapolis Shortridge 1159, Smallest School = Culver Academies 832, Enrollment % Difference = 1.39%

4A:  64 Teams. Largest School = Brebeuf Jesuit 829, Smallest School = Evansville Mater Dei 520 (success factored up), Enrollment % Difference = 1.59%

3A: 64 Teams. Largest School = Eastern Hancock 377, Smallest School = Indianapolis Lutheran 267 (success factored up), Enrollment % Difference = 1.38%

2A: 32 Teams. Largest School = Eastern Hancock 377, Smallest School = Indianapolis Lutheran 267 (success factored up), Enrollment % Difference = 1.41%

    1A:  32 Teams. Largest School = Cloverdale 283, Smallest School = Attica 160, Enrollment % Difference = 1.77%

    Playoff Schedules

Open/ Elite Division: IHSAA Playoffs Week 1, BYE for Week 1 winners, Sectional Champ Weekend, Regional Weekend, and Semi-State Weekend (Saturday Showcase)

8A: IHSAA Playoffs Week 2, Sectional Champ Weekend, Regional Weekend, and State Weekend.

Semi-States on Saturday during Regional Weekend at Purdue, ND, or IU.

    7A-5A, 2A, 1A: Current IHSAA 32-team playoff schedule

3A-4A: IHSAA Playoffs Week 1 - State Championship

1A-7A Semi-States on Friday so the Open Final is a HUGE Event.

    CoachMack's Favorite Aspects

    1. More Football (for our BEST 16, and in general)

    2. More State Champions (3 more per season)

    3. More consistent enrollment % differential across all classes (1.56% average in my model vs 1.83% in our current format), but specifically the improved differential for our smallest 128 schools.

Am I missing something, why are these two the same?

3A: 64 Teams. Largest School = Eastern Hancock 377, Smallest School = Indianapolis Lutheran 267 (success factored up), Enrollment % Difference = 1.38%

2A: 32 Teams. Largest School = Eastern Hancock 377, Smallest School = Indianapolis Lutheran 267 (success factored up), Enrollment % Difference = 1.41%

I know, that since Digital Scout ended their services before last season, that alot had been wondering what teams were going with for a new stat program,  Last year i used iScout, which was horrible but I made it through the season none the less. But during last season I found a new site that seemed like it had its stuff together.

I am going to be using TurboStats for this coming season.  It only works on Windows type products, so if you have iPads, they will not work with this. Also there is a yearly cost, but I know alot were willing to pay for a complete service if it met their needs.

This site has both software packages, and software/hardware packages.

There is a bit of setup that goes into it, but I feel that from everything I have seen, its everything I need.

Also, gives  your team its own website that lists the games and results as well as stats for the game.

I do not work for this site, nor am I endorsed by them. I was just letting people know the stat program that I was going to use this year.

www.turbostats.com if you want to check it out for your team this coming year.

We used turbostats last year.  Here is an example game:

There was a time (maybe still is the case) that we had more PAC championships than the rest of the PAC combined.  As it currently stands we haven't won the PAC since 2019.  While sectional is always on the top of the list, we would love to run the table, but as you have already pinpointed there are a few that give a challenge.

Southridge - oldest and historically most competitive rival, on paper we should smoke them but this will be contested

Gibson Southern - In the last decade our biggest rival - tons of love here, this game will be brutal

North Posey - again on paper shouldn't be close, but sometimes this is quite a game

New game in week 2 to replace Tell City (FINALLY) - Christian Academy of Louisville, they have won state in KY for the last 2 years in 3A and they runner-upped (i think) the year before that.  Pretty sure that will be contested.

We should be very, very good, and should be better than 2023, but we are talking about children and you just never know.  I am chomping at the bit for next season.

Left the 4A and 5A KY state champs for us....I see how you are.  LOL

I bet at some point South Spencer makes the decision easy for you guys like Tell City did.

    Ok.  Let's make this work.

Scrimmage Week is Game 1 and Weeks 1-9 make a 10 game regular season.

You MUST win 2 games against another IHSAA school to qualify.  If you can't get 2 wins out of 10 games then just move on to basketball.  For reference in 2023 there were 47 teams with 10 or 9 losses.  A 9 loss team either finished 1-8 and lost Round 1 or got lucky with a draw finished 2-9 or 3-9.  But to get 9 losses, you had to be 1-8 after week 9.

Last year that means 315 - 47 = 268 "qualifiers" for this set up.  Even could allow a few more teams that scheduled wins, because the magic number would be 272.

    Top 32 in enrollment = 6A tournament

Remaining 240 qualifiers split into 5 even classes of 48.  Seeded obviously with the top 16 in each class getting a bye and let a bunch of 2 & 3 win teams face each other round 1 (week 10 of current schedule).  Week 11 is round 2, each class has 32 teams and the 6 classes will still crown champs Thanksgiving weekend in LOS.

If I were omnipotent commissioner for a day, this is what I set up.

Well said....I was actually working LOL (hard to believe I know) and didn't want to think it through but this is close to what I was conceptualizing.  Thanks!

Just at first glance, other than the first 40 schools, all the other classes wouldn't have a difference of more than 200 kids. It wouldn't be terrible. Only problem is you then have to change the playoff format to something other than everyone in the class getting in. I could be wrong, but I think that was what was said at the beginning of this topic. 32 team class everyone still makes it in. Add a week 10. So 40 schools would help with that enrollment gap from what i looked at, it would create more obstacles with the playoffs tho.

I think there are brackets to make it work with byes.

Out of the PAC...I could definitely see Heritage Hills going 9-0. State appearance and returning good amount of talent. Southridge, North Posey, and Gibson Southern would be tough roadblocks.

Out of the SIAC...Reitz has went 9-0 two straight seasons but not sure they can make it three with how much they're losing. Can't rule them out though as I hear they could be reload candidates. If not them, I could see Memorial doing it as they return good talent from a sectional champ team.

Out of the SWIAC...Linton was solid last year and they return some of their top players on both sides, I could see them going 9-0 especially with their schedule.

Perhaps with Tell City dropping HH they will fill that game with an opponent who actually has the capability of beating them.

Every school has strengths and weaknesses. Some more of one than the other.  No two private schools are the same, just as no two public schools are the same.

There is a long list of factors that lead to success. No question private schools have a higher winning percentage in the postseason than what you’d expect based on quantity. But it might be because the average private school is better suited to check off factors on that list.  That doesn’t equate however to all private schools excelling simply because of their p/p designation, and it also doesn’t prohibit public schools from achieving those standards based on their designation.

The trick is to see what the good public and good private schools have in common and compare it to what the struggling public and private schools have in common.

And within that framework...enrollment alone doesn't adequate work to classify the teams who do all of those things well into groups.  Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.

  9. So I conducted an interesting experiment here.  My hypothesis appears to be correct.  The construct is that the P/P faithful will argue tooth and nail that enrollment is the only measure needed to fairly slot schools into classification for HS football.  They have lamented time after time here that there aren't any P/P advantages in high school football.  Then, interestingly, when presented with the prospect that once a public get's big enough the advantages dissipate, they will pivot and argue that P/Ps always have an advantage at any level of HS football.  There is an interesting dichotomy here, not sure if it is more Freudian or Sabater.  It appears they need to have it both ways.  I mean "need" in the most literal sense.

Not sure how this checks out when Cathedral, Roncalli, and Dwenger are some of the most successful programs in the state at these levels.

But they aren't at those levels enrollment wise.  There comes a point that the P/P advantages disappear once a public has enough shear volume of heartbeats in the hallways....given they have all the things any school needs to be successful:  Feeder, Facilities, Admin, Coaching, Community, etc etc.  Said another way....I don't think publics have anything to complain about at 5A and 6A with regard to private advantages.  The only thing possibly left on the table is the ability to recruit, but that is a tough argument with open transfer.
