I thought that before the season started the IHSAA made a change in Sectionals 17 and 18 and moved KV back into 18?  On the John Harrell site it show that KV is in sectional 17.  Which is it?

Yeah, it's odd.  Sectional 17 is a six-team bracket and Sectional 18 is an eight-team bracket.  Had heard that they would split them evenly, seven and seven, bringing KV back west.  Not sure when this was changed.

Is this a normal practice, to accept a new head coaching job but keep/send applications out for a better gig? Calumet got a very good coach, and I suppose you have to do what you have to do from a personal standpoint.  I just feel for the kids in the Niles program who haven't had much success lately, get a coach in talking up a plan/vision, and then having him leave them high and dry 2 months before the season.

Normal practice - I don't think so - but... greener pastures and whatnot.  One could speculate that perhaps he arrived and realized what he was up against.  Could be that it just wasn't a good fit for his family.  Could be... the list goes on and on.  We'll focus on the positive that is bringing a young, promising coach into Da Region. I remember a somewhat similar hire/resign that occurred at Valpo not too long ago, and that seemed to work out for them.

CP vs Andrean is a great addition to the Region football schedule. As DT pointed out, especially if the new school is built on the proposed site in CP. The new school is still not officially approved by the new Bishop. Work continues by Andrean leaders, but Bishop has not decided yet, very frustrating for many at Andrean.

With the addition of CP, the first three games next season are going to be tough for a young, rebuilding Andrean team. They open with Merrillville, then CP, then travel to Michigan power Grand Rapids Central Catholic. Baptism by fire for many new starters.

Offensively they have to replace 9 out of 11 starters, lose key players at WR, QB, RB and will start a sophomore QB behind a new offensive line. Offense will evolve and improve over the course of the season, but will be work in progress early. Defensively, this will be the strength of the team led by Bowen. Many starters and key players return. Good size and speed on defense.

In terms of NCC, Andrean will be right in the mix as usual. Lowell likely will be the favorite, Hobart loses a lot of skill players and leadership, as do Highland and KV. I'd say NCC is wide open.

State title run always one of their goals, but realistically this is a retooling year for them. Talent is there and they have been working hard in off season, but awfully young and inexperienced at Oline and QB.

    Great rundown.  Thanks!

I just saw where the state said that schools would retain the enrollment records from two years and won't realign anything for one year.

So Morton, though consolidating with Gavit, will remain in 4A?  It'll just be a superpower for the year, before making its way to 5A in 2022?  And Hammond High, though consolidating with Clark, will remain in 3A as the new Hammond Central?  Have a hard time believing that.  Too, this would leave both sectionals as seven-team brackets, correct?

Assuming Merrillville in 5A with enrollment, one figures Sectional 9 looks like:

    Merrilville, Munster, Morton, Hammond Central

Gavit and Morton into 5A as the NEW Morton High.

Clark and Hammond High into 5A as the NEW Hammond Central.

    Sectional 10 would then be:

    LaPorte, Michigan City, Valparaiso, Mishwaka???

Lots and lots of teams staying east this season.

Losing three teams from 4A Sectional 17, Morton, Gavit, and Griffith (3A enrollment), there will be some new faces heading west into Da Region.  Kankakee Valley perhaps?  New Prairie, SB St. Joseph, Logansport, Culver Academies?

That headline is potentially very misleading. I immediately think Ryan Turley, which if it isn't him, the headline should include the word assistant.

Ask and you shall receive.  A clear distinction in last night's headline:

Former Hobart High School Assistant Football Coach Investigated Over Claims Of Inappropriate Conduct

HOBART, Ind. (CBS) — A former assistant football coach in Northwest Indiana was facing serious accusations Wednesday night.

Police said they are investigating claims of inappropriate communication between the former coach at Hobart High School and one or more student athletes.

The investigation is to determine if anything criminal occurred.

There were no charges late Wednesday. Therefore, we are not identifying the person involved.

He played QB, made the region team as a RB, and made North/South team as a WR. The plot thickens. Not knocking the kid. He is a good football player and a good athlete. Having sat in region meetings, I am familiar with the process and I actually am familiar with the kid because I was a finalist the last time that job was open.  That's why I'm a little surprised. Good for him though.

Sounds like a Swiss Army knife!  Perhaps the powers that be wanted him on the team for sheer athleticism.  Knew he'd help in some way or another?

  9. After a quick glance at the State Series bracket...

Jamaal Salary, LaPorte @ 160lbs (RB)

Aiden Sneed, Kankakee Valley @ 170lbs (LB)

Jacob Simpson, Hobart @ 170lbs (State Finals LB)

Colin Kwiatkowski, Valparaiso @ 182lbs (Semistate LB)

Eli Pack, Culver Academy @ 195lbs (FB)

Gage DeMarco, Chesterton @ 195lbs (LB)

    Jason Streck, Merrillville @ 220lbs (Semistate TE/H)

Hunter Whitenack, New Prairie @ HWT (OL)

Not sure if Simpson does anything in the spring, but does anyone know of individuals who qualified for the state series in all three athletic seasons?

I found his article on facebook this morning.  I don't recall seeing a thread on it on here.   If it has already been posted, forgive me for being redundant.

The last week of the regular season (week 9) saw a National record get tied.   Blake White, the QB at Indianapolis Lutheran threw 8 TD passes in the first half against Trader Point Christian in a 63 - 6 win.  That feat has only been done 4 other times in high school football history.  For the season White has 37 TD passes which is #1 in Indiana ad #4 nationally.   Just thought I'd share.

Impressive!  Piggybacking crazy stats, I was told local prep coverage suggested that Hobart scored five defensive touchdowns last week.  Can anyone confirm and is this some kind of a record?  Thanks!

Thanks, HSF;    It must be true.  Jim is very reliable.

Wow. I think Lowell can still tie for their conference title if they beat Munster and Andrean.

Its a strange year but I guess that's been said before. .

Strange indeed.  An uncharacteristic black eye on an otherwise model football program.  The NWI Times reports that CP, Portage, Wheeler, Griffith, and KV all add a +1 in the win column.  The Hobart game stands as a no-contest.  Arguably the best 1-5 team in that state...

Yea that’s why I was asking. Not sure what all they have coming back. I’m also anxious to see how highland and KV are in year 3 with current head coaches

    With a little digging...

Lowell: QB returns with a slew of RBs.

Highland: Stud RB/FB/LB Rios is back.

KV: QB returns for a third campaign.

I'd guess that the week six clash of Andrean/Hobart will decide the conference championship.

Lowell/KV/Highland in the middle looking to play spoiler.

    Munster bringing up the rear.

Fun game to watch, neither defense could stop the other offense... take those fumbles away and that would have probably been a wild finish!
Anxious to see how Valpo/mville game goes, Hobart/Andrean could be a doozy too. Will Lowell be a player this year?

The Red Devils are always a solid team. One of the top programs in the area, year in and year out.  I'd venture they've earned the right to be considered a contender.

  14. Andrean plays a difficult schedule, regularly facing larger opponents.  Added two difference-makers on offense from neighboring private schools in Illinois.  Throw in a healthy #3, and the Niners will be a very tough out come playoff time.
