Well, having read the region sports board from the link above, some quotes are out there:

    1. Merrillville’s defense is far superior to Snider - Wow, that is quite a statement. Not sure what games that poster watched of Snider, but the Panthers defense is pretty good. Must be the 11 D-1 starters on defense for the Pirates…

    2. Snider hasn’t seen speed like Merrillville - Uh, Snider plays plenty of speed teams. FYI, Snider has plenty of speed as well…

    3. The real state title game was Valpo vs. Merrillville - Let’s see how that plays out… Pretty damn sure Snider isn’t going to lay down against the Pirates and whoever comes out of the South is pretty damn good as well…

It is only Tuesday so let’s see what else is said from the Region…

But does Merillville have city speed?

    Snider wins in single digits.

Not sure what to expect. I see Snider has a higher scoring O on average and looks like both D's give up about the same amount of points on average. As we see in most of these games, usually comes down to who has less penalties and turnovers, 3rd down conversions and special teams. Does M-ville have a good kicking game? That is huge key in deep playoff run.

One concern I have is Snider's secondary now after Mishawaka passed for over 300 yards. Maybe that was a result of Cavemen's run game?? How good of a passing team  are the Pirates? How does O & D line match up to Snider's?

Wondering that myself, if Mishawaka exposed a weakness in the Snider D or if the run-oriented offense worked to open up the passing game that could have conceivably burned any legit D.  If Snider has done well vs. other passing schemes that may have been a one-off.

Definitely not flaming you - and I had the same thoughts myself - but I have grown to really enjoy it. It's an offense that truly all 11 players have to do their job in order for it to be effective. And the proof is in the pudding on the success Warsaw has had running it. In the 6 seasons under Coach Curtis, they have gone 48-16, won 2 conference championships (last NLC championship before that was back in 2001), their first ever sectional championship (2019) and playing in their 5th straight sectional championship game this Friday. They have averaged 30 PPG on offense over that time, and had 20 games of 40+ points scored.

It might seep boring initially, but I feel like it can grow on any fanbase. Especially when you watch it ran to perfection like it was Friday night against Carroll. It's the great equalizer in my opinion. Yes, if you get down fast and early, it makes it tricky to get back in the ball game, and has happened a handful of times for the Tigers. But the pros outweight the cons from my observation.

I don't disagree with any of your comments.  There's a lot of moving pieces and timing that go into that style of play.  If a team does it well and has a good D, like Warsaw, they're hard to beat.  It is interesting to watch, however for me it slows down the game too much.  OTOH, I'm not a big fan of the pass happy "greatest show on turf" style either.  I like to see a balanced offense.  This obviously boils down to a matter of personal preference, and I can appreciate and respect your view on it.

Being a former resident of NE Indiana, I hope Warsaw does well.

  4. Interesting thread and read about Warsaw's offense.  Not sure how many large schools down here are run-heavy, but there's a fair amount of small schools that like the option/wishbone/flexbone-style of offense.  There's a team about an hour away from me that typically will use up the entire 40-second clock every play, in addition to running the ball 98% of the time.  They played a team earlier this season that scores practically at will (one of your perennial powerhouses) and they held that team to 21 points.  They still lost, 21-0, but considered holding that particular team to 21 a moral win.

No offense (pun intended) to anyone, to each his own, but I find that style of play very boring.  Playing keep away is fine if you got the D to stop the other team, which it appears Warsaw has so far, so props to them.  I remember several games when my kids were in school, where we could shut down that 3 yards and a cloud of dust scheme, next thing they know it's the middle of the 2nd quarter and that running team is down by 3-4 scores.  Hard to catch up at that point.

Good on Warsaw for being competitive with that style of O.  I just think at some point they will run into a team that can stop it, then that slow clock-eating offense works against you.

JMO, don't flame me too bad for it.

    Only 4 NE8 teams left.....

Bishop Dwenger @ Dekalb.....the Barons will keep this close for a bit, maybe even till halftime, but the Saints will pull away in the second half in a big way.....Dwenger 35-14

Mississinewa @ Columbia City.....the Eagles had a ROUGH 4 weeks to end the regular season but got back on the right foot last week...upset coming....Columbia City 28-17

GOTW- East Noble @ Leo......East Noble has been on a TEAR since the Leo loss earlier (14-7).  Leo has also been on a tear handling the lower echelon NE8 teams to end the year..in the first game the Knights held Hurst in check, if they do it again they will win.......East Noble gets revenge.....Knights 24-22

Should be a really good one, and I'm like you, not expecting a blowout.  All the cliche's about who has the ball more, who scores last, who makes the least mistakes should come into play here.

Your lack of confidence is well-documented.... AC is as healthy as they've been all season with likely only one starter out. Things look a lot better with 78 back. There is a silver lining to the injuries this year...if someone goes down in the postseason, there are guys who have legit varsity experience. I would be surprised if anyone in the north legitimately has a chance to take down the Jets going into the 4th quarter of any of their upcoming games.

That's very true.  Some legit experience for the younger guys could go a long way this time of year.

Bonecrusher gave a pretty good explanation. It's used for the Freshman and JV home games. It's also the current home to Blackhawk Christian's new football program. Blackhawk sits inside the Snider school district about 6 or 7 minutes away. When FWCS's built Northrop and Wayne High School's back in the late 60's, they built two very nice duplicate stadiums on the campuses. Both stadiums were meant to be shared. Northrop and Snider. Wayne and South Side. South Side had a nice stadium built for them, I want to say 25 years ago, when they underwent a multi million dollar upgrade. So that leaves Snider, the highest income generating athletic producer in Fort Wayne, as the only school in the city without their own stadium. There's actually a very large piece of property across the street from Snider that is owned by FWCS. I don't see any reason why they couldn't build a stadium there. I'm not sure it really matters. Snider has gotten on a bus for their home football games for over five decades, so it's really just another day at the office for them. Plus they draw a good crowd at those games, so I don't know what incentive FWCS has to give Snider their own stadium. But they did give one to South Side, a school that draws about 1/20th the crowd that Snider draws, so I guess we'll just see what the future holds.

That's pretty cool!  It's the right sized venue for that size of team and almost literally just down the road - with a right turn at Reed.

Agree it's pretty ironic that the top football income generating school in the FWCS doesn't have it's own house.

    Week 5 Preview

Heritage @ Adams Central:  Easy choice for game of the week in the ACAC and likely NE IN if it weren't for Carroll and Snider matching up this week. There's been some comments made by media and others questioning whether AC is as good as in the past because of some slower starts. This team is certainly different than past years. Not as explosive at times, but they've shown moments of it. I honestly think that people, including Ft. Wayne media members, are tired of AC being good and are hoping that the Jets fall off. I'm hoping that the Jets show up big in their first legitimate conference test in the last two years. They have potential to be as good or better than the past couple of years if they turn things on from the opening kickoff. The work is cut out for the Jets, as Heritage's QB is looking like he can carry this team to a level of success that they haven't seen in years. If AC plays up to their capabilities, I think they win by 20+. It could also be a one-score game, which could go to either team, if AC comes out flat.

Bluffton @ Jay County: Jay County came out and played hard last week against a much more talented AC team. Bluffton should be able to win handily with their physicality. I could see this being close at the beginning.

Woodlan @ Southern Wells: Woodlan seems to struggle on the offensive side of the ball a little more than on defense. I expect the Warriors to win this one, but it will be closer than in recent years.

South Adams @ Monroe Central: Last time SA lost two conference games in a row? 2018. They hit the road in a non-conference match-up that should get them back on the winning track.

Would love to see Heritage pull this one out, but realistically it seems - from what I've read - AC should be the favored team.  If ya'll were playing anyone else, I'd be pulling for you.  Good to see Heritage working their way back up the ladder.

Talk about timing, the wife and I are going to be visiting family in IN, and we'll be up there next Friday.  If we were going to be there this week, I would have tried to check this one out.  Last time I been to AC I was still in high school!  Hope it's a good competitive game.  A blowout either way does neither team any good at this point.

Sorry if this is dumb question, I am not that familiar with Fort Wayne Football I follow 6A Indianapolis Donut hole teams. Where does Snider play their home games?  I did google map satellite image and I can't image 6000 fans in that stadium.

    image.png.84d9013b07aee152bcde805038fd4ef1.png

Snider shares Spuller Stadium with Northrop.  The stadium is on Northrop's campus.  It's a good sized place, very similar to FW Wayne's stadium.  The field in your post at Snider's campus is, IIRC, used for practice/track meets/sub-varsity games.  Snider is pretty land-locked.  There's a thread somewhere on here, from the last 1-2 years, about Snider getting there own stadium and why it hasn't worked out so far.  The two schools are only maybe 10-15 minutes apart.

German Catholic genetics mixed with a strong farming & family oriented background. They are predominantly catholic kids that attend public schools. They do not start football until the 7th grade. They believe that youth football teaches bad fundamentals. I don't disagree, but don't fully agree either. I think if you have the right people to be an extension of the high school & middle school in your youth programs, it could succeed. You have to control "daddy ball" (both definitions) and make sure the kids are executing the same fundamentals & plays the HS/MS do properly.

Bingo! All programs have peaks and valleys. but down here where football is king, the schools with solid youth programs seem to be more consistent top performers.

Case-in-point, my youngest son was the only kid in his 7th grade class that played youth football prior to then.  The first part of the season he already knew and had a good grasp on what the coaches were trying to teach the other kids.  Imagine if all the kids playing that year had enough experience to know most of the fundamentals they teach at that level, and already have an understanding of a very simplified version of the offense/defense that the school ran - they would have been so far ahead.  One of our opponents, who is the textbook definition of a perennial powerhouse team, had a fantastic youth program.  They hit the ground running in 7th grade and it was very easy to tell the difference between them and schools like ours whose kids were just trying to figure it out.

Arlington High School closed in 2018 (along with Broad Ripple and Northwest). The IPS school board decided Arlington would reopen as Arlington Middle School for the 2018-2019 school year. So Arlington Middle School field was actually a High School field that is now known as Arlington Middle School Field. Both Cathedral and Chatard used it as their homefield in the early 90's as well as Broad Ripple's football field. The field is natural grass and since Cathedral got an agreement from Arlington to use it Cathedral has paid for the Natural Grass to be resurfaced and cared for. Yes with excessive rain (hence the photo up above) it does get muddy, but it is actually in better condition than it ever was while Arlington High School was still operating.

OK, now that you mention it I do vaguely remember hearing about a Arlington HS back in the day.  When it changed to JH I was already out of state.  Interesting...  Nice to see a larger school still using natural grass.

  11. OK, so what's up with all these high school teams - some of them larger schools - playing games at a jr. high venue?  I don't live in Indiana anymore, and keep seeing this "at Arlington MS".

Do they have a kickin' new stadium that's better than the high schools?  Is there a push for neutral site regular season games (IIRC most of these are Indy-area teams)?  Are these high schools all having work done at their stadiums concurrently?

What gives?  As the guy in the Dirty Harry movie said, "I gots to know!"

  12. I think moving kickoff time back 60 minutes is the best option.  I can tell you it's brutal on the field and in the stands that last couple hours of daylight in the earlier parts of the season down here in TX -- and we're used to these temps!  Been 103-110 (with heat index 110-120) most of the summer.  It's got to be even more difficult playing/spectating in temps like those if you're NOT used to it.

Regarding time zone, I have always thought Indiana is too far west to BOTH be in eastern time and have daylight savings, or even to be in eastern w/o DST.  Indiana should be on central.  DST is a discussion for another thread probably.

About every sectional in Indiana you can go through and there is a clear top 4. Between Sagarin, AP poll, Coaches Poll, common sense, etc. the IHSAA should be able to figure it out. And guess what? If you are a 2 seed and should be a 1, you still don't see that other top team until the championship which is how it should be. It's such an easy fix, I have no idea why they don't do it.

I'm pretty firmly against neutral site games (except for state of course). I know a little bit of it is bias because up here in the northern part of the state there really isn't too much travel between the schools. I know down in southern Indiana it gets to be quite a hall for some of the match ups. But at the end of the day I just don't think playing at a neutral site is going to create a great atmosphere for a championship game. I'd rather have 1 school pack a stadium with the entire community then have 2 schools travel 1.5 hours each with just their family friends. People talk about how the class system ruined Indiana High School basketball. I can see neutral or Saturday games doing something similar to football

I believe it depends heavily on the support level/buy-in from the parents and community.  How well do the fans travel?  How much do they get "into the game"?

Granted I haven't been to a HS game in Indiana for a good while so you may be correct for Hoosier ball, but I can tell you in the lone star state where I reside now, that argument about the atmosphere lacking won't hold water.

Fort Wayne representing in this list

Heck yeah!  Will be interesting to see how Dwenger does, ranked where they are in this poll.  Thinking they might be ranked a tad high, but it would be more than OK with it if they proved me wrong.  Snider & North look about right for pre-season IMHO.

  15. The homestead exemption here caps the tax (what you actually pay) increase at 10% of the previous year.  So if my house appraisal quadruples in a year, my tax bill will still only be 10% more than previous year.  Now there are a good number of people here who, for whatever reason, have not gone the homestead route - and many of them are in serious financial trouble.  Recently they've said "they're not increasing the tax rate", but then they just make a ridiculous appraisal on your property to make up for it.  Not exactly the same thing, but a similar mindset as the "1984" reference.

Apologies to the OP for derailing this thread.

No state income tax in Texas.

True, and I def saw that as a plus when we moved here from Indiana 17 years ago.  But boy the last few years they've really stuck it to us down here with property taxes!  My last three tax appraisals combined have not quite tripled the value of my home.  If it weren't for my homestead exemption, I would be in a bad place.  Whats the property tax situation like up there?

  17. When I first saw this I thought it was for Poteet HS in Mesquite, TX (Dallas suburb).  I didn't realize there was a town by that name, as well.  Learned something new today already!

Only ~2 hours from the coast to Corpus; South Padre's a little farther, but both are good places for a vacay.

Looks like a decent program.  Last 3 seasons winning records, looks like they been going 1 or 2 round into playoffs.

  18. I remember when this hit a week or two ago.

400 push-ups in an hour is one every 9 seconds, so do a push-up count to 6 or 7, then do the next -- that's if you wanted to space them out evenly.  It's been so long since I've done any kind of work out like that I don't have a feel for how difficult it really is.  My 23 y/o son had some workouts similar when he was playing HS ball.  He said it's not easy but if you're in shape, and have been doing push-ups fairly consistently, it's def doable.  He's not an "expert", but a fb player elementary through HS (grad 2018), is a certified trainer and working in that field, so I believe him.

I have attached a link to the thread from the TX football forum I'm on down here.  There is lots of commentary, and also a Twitter link.  Supposedly some of these kids were taking performance enhancement substances (creatin?), the coach was unaware of, that could contribute to the symptoms they showed.  Also, if these kids were not used to doing push-ups, just an extreme load of a routine the body isn't used to could do some damage.  The coach, in theory, should be aware of what his players are ingesting, but is that realistic if no one tells him?  There's def two sides to this story, that is still developing by the way.  I have not formed an opinion yet, still waiting to see what shakes out.
