The one from Westfield was at Sheridan for his Jr and Sr year.  Again, phenomenal kid.  According to him and his parents, he was struggling in such a large environment, and the "small school" feel helped tremendously in academics and his state of mind.

Glad this family was able to make this personal decision to benefit their son.  That's the way it should be.

Now I'm going to shuffle off to a 2A thread to avoid that whiny Sheridan announcer complain that benefits like this should keep parochial schools out of 1A.

  2. South Putnam is going to be very hard to beat in the south this year.  Of the two south teams that came within one score of Lutheran, the Eagles have the most coming back.  Starting QB returns, along with one of the best deep threats in 1A as a sophomore.  Look for South Putnam to put up a lot of points.

Providence was better last year, but graduated quite a few key contributors.

  3. Map of possible 2A sectionals, if the preliminary list from above holds.  Provides more of a northwest/southeast semi-state than a true north/south semi-state.

The proposed sectional in Indianapolis would consist of: Park Tudor, Covenant Christian, Heritage Christian, Cardinal Ritter, Scecina Memorial, Lutheran and Chistel House Manual.  I assume gerrymandering in LCC and Andrean in exchange for Manual will be considered.

(Note: site is behind a paywall)

A new p/p threat has emerged in the Lafayette metro area.  Who will they steal away from the likes of Jeff, Harrison, McCutchen,  the River Rats,  etc.?

We'll pencil them in as the 2028 1A North representative.  Blackhawk Christian should be bumped to 2A by that point.

Again, what causes enrollment to be an issue?

Surely students wouldn't be turned down or left out for any reason would they?

Not exactly sure why this is hard to understand.  You never want to think people are being intentionally dense, but sometimes you have to wonder.

Maybe the issue is how people understand the phrase "controlling enrollment".  That's often used in the context of enrollment numbers, as in, "private schools control their numbers to remain in a particular class."  This doesn't happen.  Ever.  Schools may grow faster than their projected rates (Guerin?), but any limitations on enrollment are based solely on building capacity.  No school wants to have a population smaller than their building capacity, especially if it's a school that can't issue a bond referendum for expansion.

If you're referring to "controlling enrollment" in the context of evaluating the quality of students for admission, that absolutely happens.  But it's not based on height/weight/40-time.  And it's probably pretty rare that a student is denied a seat when there's one available (see the point above).

I think you're right. I feel like I have been unfair with my opinion of private schools and the challenges their coaches face. I have never been one of the 17 coaches on the sideline of a school with 258 kids. So, what would you see as challenges that are private school coaches/teams face?

The incessant weeping and gnashing of teeth displayed by overzealous public school fans around tournament time makes it difficult for private school coaches to enjoy the GID like any normal fan.  And that is a tragedy.

It's obvious they fare better at the 1A-3A level because they can control their enrollment.

Any help you can provide Indy Lutheran would be appreciated.  They'd like to "control their enrollment" up about 50-70 students.  Building holds 400, but staff/course offerings are optimized at about 320.  Last enrollment figures were 245.  Thanks in advance.

    My way too early picks:

    1) Adams Central - 3rd time is a charm for the Jets.  They head into 2A with a blue ring.

    2) Providence - South sleeper.  Young team in '22 bounced by Lutheran in the regional.  They avenge that loss in '23 in what will be considered an upset, but really isn't.

    3) Lutheran - Name a single 1A/2A team in the last 20 years that graduated 15 seniors and were as good the following year.  I can't either.

    4) South Putnam - Strong program, but won't make it through a tough sectional.

    5) North Judson San Pierre - Advance based on returning experience, despite losing a lot to graduation.

    6) North Decatur - See above.  I think they would have won it all had they made it past Lutheran in semi-state.

    7) Carroll (Flora) - Someone has to win sectional 43.

8 ) Sheridan - Someone has to win sectional 45.

    9) South Adams - Gets beat twice by big brother.  Again.

    10) Milan - Not much size, but scrappy.

    North:  AC over NJSP

    South: Providence over North Decatur

    State:  AC over Providence

I'm sticking to my top 4 preseason ranking from July.  Might juggle the top 3 a little.

Coaches don't even have to recruit to stockpile talent, parents and kids aren't dumb. They know where to go.

    This.

The overwhelming majority of what people label "recruiting" is done by parents and other kids.

Ultimately, I'd hate to limit a parent/player's freedom to choose.  It's how markets work.  It may be dumb to change schools for athletic reasons, but limiting freedom to make bad decisions is worse.

I bet South Side goes 5-0 against the Indy publics. I'm not saying recruiting doesn't occur in Fort Wayne, because it absolutely does. But there's more of a balance in Fort Wayne from the bottom to the top. There is zero balance in Indy. Either your top ten in the state or you're bottom ten. There doesn't seem to be an in between like there is in Fort Wayne. How did Indy Lutheran become so good so fast? Just a bunch of good ol Lutheran boys working hard? I'm not so sure.

Not trying to compare South Side to the IPS schools.  They're all bad.  I was using South Side as an example of the same dynamic in The Fort that occurs in Indy.  Both cities had large population shifts away from those two school districts.  IPS seems to have lost more population to the mega township schools outside 465 than FWCS has lost to Snider/Homestead/Carroll.

I agree with you that there is a bigger disparity between IPS and the Indy township schools than there is between South and the rest of the SAC.

And for what it's worth, Lutheran has had about as many players from IPS feeder schools as Concordia has received from South Side/Geyer.

Someone from Indy help me out. Recruiting is probably the reason the PP's, Ben Davis, and Warren Central are so good and teams deep inside the donut are so bad. I'm just not sure how Indianapolis teams can be as bad as they are without their best talent being raided by their neighbors. I'm presuming suburban schools are self sustaining based on their enrollment and resources alone and have nothing to do with the outright failure in Indianapolis proper when it comes to football.

Why is South Side terrible at football?  Could it be that the parents of talented kids in the surrounding neighborhoods decide to send their kids to Snider or Luers?  Do these same parents convince other parents to do the same?  Probably not a single Snider/Luers coach involved.  Same thing applies in Indy, just 3x the scale.

What exactly are you trying to imply here? That the Sheridan police actually do their jobs? Or that they target people from out of town?

Just offering friendly advice to the good people from North Decatur.

Forgot to add:  If you do get your car towed for a broken taillight, remember to pay the impound fee in cash (small bills) to make it easier for the lot owner to split the fee with the officer who wrote the ticket.

  13. Each of the 4 regional games this weekend is a rematch from last year.  When was the last time that happened, and will the results be the same?

    Harrell Predictions:

North Judson over Park Tudor, 35-28:  Was D.J. Gordon available for this game last year?  Can North Judson shut him down this year?

Adams Central over Carroll, 31-24:  What does Carroll have to do to pull off the upset?

Sheridan over North Decatur, 31-24:  Only prediction I disagree with.  Game is at Sheridan, so if you're traveling from Greensburg, make sure all your taillights work, your license plate is current and keep it under the speed limit once you hit the Sheridan line.

Lutheran over Providence, 38-24:  Providence is having a great year, but has their schedule prepared them for the Saints?
