I know it was a very small dataset, but you could see in the scrimmage that Westfield was going to have trouble against Ben Davis. They could not keep BD's defensive line out of their offensive backfield.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't see much room for Carmel to grow out much more. It's not like Zionsville, Noblesville, Westfield or Fishers/HSE. It's kind of locked in by those places.

Ben Davis was a really good football team last year, but Brownsburg or Center Grove could have won it all too. The Giants were just a little better/luckier on that particular night. It was going to be one of those three or even Cathedral in 6A. Respectfully, no one in the North was going to win State last year as good as CP was.

Warsaw went down and Snider moves up. Harrison has joined 6A and Cathedral remains in 6A as well. 

With Snider moving up, this could be an all Fort Wayne sectional. 

Sectional 1 could easily be Portage, Harrison, Lake Central and Crown Point.

Sectional 2, 3, and  4 are where some changes may come about. 

Possible outlook for Sectional 2: Penn, Elkhart, Carroll and Northrop 

Possible outlook for Sectional 3: Snider, Homestead, HSE and Fishers

Possible outlook for Sectional 4: Carmel, Westfield, Noblesville and  Maybe Zionsville. 

Penn and Elkhart make things muddy with them sitting in the middle of the state. If Valpo would have moved up We could have seen Valpo and Portage back in sectional 2. The Fort Wayne schools are almost interchangeable in regards to placement in either sectional 2 or 3. In Sectional 4 for me it is hard to know which schools will likely be labeled a Northern school since they are all so close. 

Ben Davis tends to be a tennis ball that gets bounced around. In 6A, the Giants have been paired with Avon, Brownsburg, Pike, Arsenal Tech, Perry Meridian, Southport, Lawrence North, Lawrence Central and Warren Central in Sectional. Personally, I think the Avon/Brownsburg/Pike configuration makes the most sense. Ben Davis has still never played Franklin Central even though they were paired in the same Sectional in 5A for a cycle.

The trophy says IHSAA (Year) Football Champions (Class)

Which is accurate. They are the state champion of that class. Are there some years the 6A State Champion might not be the overall State Champion/superior team? It's plausible. I think if you win your class, you earn the right to be called a State Champion.

Pete is a good person. He was a first-rate colleague in the short time he was here at Ben Davis. I hope he succeeds as the HC at Penn.

Good luck Coach Gilbert! Coach was a year behind me here at Ben Davis. I graduated in 93 and he graduated in 94.

After two games vs. out of state teams last year for Ben Davis...

Looks like a lot of schools are posting their schedules for 2024. What games are you looking forward to on your school's schedule?

For Ben Davis, after having six home games last year, they drop to four in 2024. The Giants pick up Cathedral in the Moeller slot, and Center Grove returns to the schedule. Looking forward to the 100th meeting of Ben Davis and Warren Central.

9/6-at Pike 

9/13-CENTER GROVE 

9/20-at Warren Central (100th Meeting)

Coach Yeoman had the unenviable task of following a legend. It's not easy, but he did a fine job as the head coach of the Kingsmen. Congratulations on a great career, Coach. From all accounts, he's a first-rate human being. 

I can only imagine what some of those early Avon coaches like my dad and his players from the 1960's would have thought about this facility. Good gracious. That's a beautiful facility, and that's a great tidbit about the Valley. Something I never knew, and I've been a Westsider for all of my 48 years.

Exactly. Great example. I'm sure we'll see those areas around major metros continue to see growth. We're seeing it around Indianapolis where, when I was a kid in the 90's, Avon and Brownsburg were small, country farm schools. Now, they're massive. When I taught at Franklin Central, we had 1,700 kids. That school is almost twice that size now 25 years later.

Indiana's population is not declining. It's showed stability or very small growth. Now, if you're talking community by community, then I get what you're saying. There are some areas where the population is declining and others where it's growing exponentially.

Obviously yes. But, for Indiana schools, the travel part hasn't changed. It's more for the outside schools. I guess it just increased the pool of teams that could play Indiana teams.
