  1. Appreciate the responses gentlemen - thank you very much.

So, next question then- when a seeding proposal is shot down by a 16-0 vote (or whatever it was), it that vote done by the Executive committee?? (Who, according to my reading, is NOT made up of principals - but rather AD's?)

Ultimately, the governing body of a group of members answers to … the members. The IHSAA bylaws specify the process by which the IHSAA Commissioner’s office runs the day to day activities, while the Executive Committee (elected by the Members) oversees them. Pretty much the way most corporations operate: shareholders elect a Board of Directors, who hire the CEO and oversee operations.

SO?? The IHSAA Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner's answer to the member schools?? Which...is all of us??

Or the Commissioner and the Assistant Commissioner's answer to the Executive Committee?? Which is ?? Who is that made up of?? And how does one get elected/appointed to that position??

    Seems pretty vague to me....

  3. With the recent seeding proposal shot down quicker than ...well I can't come up with anything "catchy" - but anyway, with it being shot down it got me wondering. The NFL/NBA commissioner has to answer to the owners of the league.

Who does the IHSAA "brass/higher ups/executive committees" quote/unquote have to "answer to??" Like...who hires these positions? And...who/do they have bosses to answer to? The IFCA presents a proposal for seeding...the IHSAA just says "NOPE"...and that is it?? The IHSAA decides they are going to do this new 1A-4A classification thing for non-football sports...and they viola - it happens! Meanwhile, their is a big contingent that thinks it would be a better idea in football to have the biggest 32 in 6A...smallest 32 in 1A, then rest split evenly...but the IHSSA says - NOPE!!

I will admit I am ignorant on the whole deal so there may be an easy answer to this...but sometimes it just seems to me like the IHSAA higher ups are like the almighty OZ.

The only way GS, VL, HH, EM, PCHS, SR, MV & MD (listed by enrollment) aren't in the same Sectional is if there is some serious monkey business going on at the IHSAA. Adding Memorial and MD makes an obvious 8 team group in SWIN. Will be a tough, tough Sectional. Princeton is gonna have to burn a lot of boats...

Interesting that GS could very well be 4A next time around as they are 30 or so from the top of 3A. MD is less than 10 from the 2A cut-off, so they could potentially bounce down next time around.

Also, I will add that the IHSAA has shown before that they will consider "competitive balance" and not just geography when determining sectionals ...in our own wrestling sectional Floyd Central and New Albany were both added (driving right past Jeffersonville, which is 10 minutes away) in order to try and even out the competition.

Take that for what it is worth

Ok I’ll stoke that fire…you Tiger fans better be careful what you are asking for in regards to this sectional. I know the Tigers have been uber successful the past 15 years or so- but a sectional such as this could put an end to such success real quick . Just saying…

With Boonville and now Washington already there. South Spencer, Forest Park dropping to 1A and Pike to 2A - I think maybe the PAC should split permanently.

Maybe even call up SR to the big leagues, unless they are hell bent on padding the trophy case.

The realignment of the PAC had very minimal effect on our schedule- minus shuffling a few teams around to certain weeks. We play all the important players in the PAC (traditionally) anyway- so who cares what “division” we are in…we certainly don’t I can promise you that.

Of course not. As I've said multiple times (obsessed in your words), those teams in the same Sectional would provide some great games for fans and great competition for the players. As to the financial side, maybe it isn't a concern to a public school, but maximizing gate receipts is an important revenue source for us. Personally, I'd rather see big games between schools in the same general area in the Sectional, not the Regional or Semi-State, because I'd like for the schools to reap the rewards of bringing thousands of fans instead of the IHSAA.

It almost sounds like you would prefer a Sectional that isn't competitive from top to bottom? What's the rationale for that?

In Southern Indiana (when talking PAC and SIAC) - I think our track record for postseason success speaks for itself and there is really nowhere to hide when it comes to where we, or any other team, is placed is sectionals. We'll strap it up and play regardless of where we are placed.

What I do hope to avoid is the atrocity that was sectional 30 a few years ago - I do believe in being somewhat "competitively balanced" (when feasible) in sectional alignments. Meaning, I don't believe it is right/fair to "load" up one sectional with routinely top 10 teams and have another sectional of ...well not so on par programs.

  7. 1 hour ago, tango said:

It was, but from the schools' standpoint, having that game in Sectional would have been far more lucrative and the environment would have not changed. As a semi-state game each school received only 100 tickets worth of gate revenue. Instead, the IHSAA was the one who made the bank. Call it what you want, but a Sectional with tradition-rich schools like GS, HH, SR, & Ev. Memorial will offer some great games to watch and the schools will benefit financially and competitively.

Ahh ok I see.....so it is all about the $$$$$$.

We got plenty of gate from the Vincennes sectional championship.  I agree with Jets...I'd rather see a couple of the four schools you mentioned in a Semi-State.  In terms of the HH game...the atmosphere could have been even better had there actually had been visitor seating...to many standing etc.  Many fans forced to sit on the home side that normally wouldn't have.....kinda feels shady to me.  I understand work was underway.....but common man!

Someone check the gates of he#$% and make sure they haven't frozen over!!

There were some funky groupings in several areas during the last cycle... HH and GS (2 PAC schools w/in 50 miles of each other) playing for a semi-state being an example...

And it was one of the most electric, coolest atmosphere's for a semi-state that I've been to. (And I've been to plenty of them)

You seem obsessed with creating a southern "sectional of death" (you've mentioned it many times since the enrollment numbers have been given out) like it is some sort of badge of honor?? I say the more spread out (if possible) and the better possibility for deeper advancement leads to cooler atmosphere's like the one mentioned above.

I am pleased to share with you that Pete Riordan will be recommended for Board approval to the position of Penn Head Football Coach.

Coach Riordan has been an assistant coach on the Kingsmen Football staff for 20 years (most recently serving as Defensive Coordinator). He relocated to Indianapolis from 2007-2009 while his wife was in residency as a physician. During this time Coach Riordan served as assistant coach at Ben Davis for three seasons (2007-2009), the last two seasons as defensive coordinator.

He will be Penn’s seventh head coach of the Kingsmen Football Team.

Coach Riordan teaches Economics, Advanced Placement Economics and ACP Business at Penn. And as you may remember, he was recently named a teacher Impact Award winner for helping his students increase their test scores on their AP exams by as much as 20%.

The announcement happened earlier this morning when Coach Riordan worked with Athletic Director Jeff Hart, Strength & Conditioning Coach Matt Cates, and retiring Head Coach Cory Yeoman to surprise his players with the news. It was important for Coach Riordan to talk to the team first before making a public announcement. A public news conference is taking place at 2:00 this afternoon.

In addition to coaching Football at Penn, Coach Riordan was a Junior Varsity Baseball Coach at Penn (2001-2003). Penn won the State Championship in Baseball in 2001. He served as the Boys Freshman Basketball Head Coach (2001), the season that the Kingsmen finished as State Runner-up. He was a volunteer assistant Football coach at Northridge for the 2000 season.

Coach Riordan owns a state championship legacy. He played on the 1995 South Bend St. Joseph State Championship Football Team and was a three-year starter. Coach Riordan also played one year of Football at Wabash College. He earned a B.A. from Wabash and earned an MBA in Finance from Indiana University South Bend.

Coach Riordan credited his high school coach, Frank Amato, for teaching the love and respect for the game of Football. He also credited former Penn Defensive Coordinator Don Monhaut for teaching the details and preparation of game-planning, and former Penn Head Coach Cory Yeoman for his unbelievable passion for the game.

The P-H-M Board of School Trustees will officially approve Superintendent Dr. Jerry Thacker’s recommendation of Coach Riordan to this position at its meeting on Monday, March 25, 2024.

Coach Riordan and his wife, Nicole (Penn Class of 1999) have two daughters who attend P-H-M schools.

Please join me in congratulating Pete Riordan on his new position as the Kingsmen Football team’s new Head Coach!

Pete is a good man, and a good coach, I don't know if he is the correct pick for this program to bring them back to 6A relevancy. Time will tell.

Now THAT is impressive. Do you have any idea if he will remain in those roles while taking the Head Coaching job at such a prestigious school??

    1.  Money, great SES, two parent households, etc.

    2.  One of, if not THE fastest growing area of population in the state.

    3.  Facilities are top notch.

    4.  Best conference in Indiana FORCES them to stay competitive (a rising tide raises all boats).

    5.  Recent state championship appearance/success that can be sold as a cultural piece to the current crop of student athletes.

    6.  Pay/teaching schedule.

    Just my opinion.

Care to elaborate as far as Coach Gilbert's role within the school?? Dean of students? Strength Coach? That type of salary seems to suggest some type of Administration role I would guess??

Works out perfect for the new Sectional 32:

    GS - 771

    VL - 711

    Heritage Hills - 635

    Ev. Memorial - 617

    Princeton - 600

    Southridge - 576

    Mt. Vernon (Posey) - 574

    Ev. Mater Dei - 520

Any other grouping would be completely illogical...

Memorial better be careful what they wish for…wasn’t so long ago you were in the Patriots sectional and were, well, pretty much irrelevant.

They also wrestle 30 matches a year. Usually after 30 matches you see a decent amount of the schools in your sectional and have a good idea of who is the dude to beat in the sectional. Not as easy to do with 9 games.

I get that they do it for wrestling - an individual sport.  But when would you and @jets propose the meeting?

Saturday morning after week 9?  That could be possible in 1-4A, but would be much easier in 5 & 6 where you would still have two weeks to prepare.

Every time seeding gets brought up - the naysayers sprout up with these points (how are you going to make it FAIR & logistically WHEN would you have the meetings) ....YOU'RE MISSING THE MOST OBVIOUS POINT - it is 100% better than having two 9-0 teams play 1st round while 1-8 gets to play 2-7!?!? IN WHAT WORLD is that right/fair?!?

Give the regular season some form of meaning.

Will things be PERFECT?? Of course not....but it is light years better than what we have in place now.

I guess I don't understand that, but yes, to each their own.

I did grow up here, btw. And do coach here now.

    Ok - I'll give this a try:

    1. Your original point (from what I gathered) is Brownstown doesn't have a soccer program because of its lack of proximity to a larger metro area.

    2. I said that argument/point doesn't necessarily hold water/make sense - as there are plenty of examples around the State of similar logistics that do have soccer.

    - It's no skin off my back either way, again, was just curious. I think the easier argument/point to make would be "we just don't want it (which you did say) and the community doesn't either" ....that in itself would be shocking to me, just given the culture of things nowadays

I googled all of them before I posted what I posted. I understood how far in minutes and miles they were from Evansville when I posted. Thanks.

We don't have soccer close to us, not hard to figure out. Not sure there was ever anything for you to take issue with....  I was asked a question about why kids in Brownstown don't play soccer.

I was just genuinely curious (and maybe a little jealous?!) how a school such as Brownstown doesn't have a soccer program. Obviously that is a big win for the football program (in terms of numbers)...I don't necessarily buy the argument of the proximity to a big city being necessary for having a soccer program - that doesn't make much sense to me? But, to each their own....

What do those schools have in common that Brownstown doesn't? Especially North Posey/Tecumseh.... but even still Pike Central/Tell City have very simple drives/access to...

Outside of that--- we simply don't want it.

I actually don't know the answer?? Is there something obvious that I am missing?

  16. 39 minutes ago, btownqbcoach1 said:

We have 480 students, so 240-ish boys... 60-65 of those play football. We also don't really have anyone in the community that cares to have soccer.

Certainly understand that - but there are plenty of schools with those enrollment numbers and/or fewer that still certainly field a soccer program. (well, maybe not football roster numbers, those are impressive) North Posey, Pike Central, Tecumseh, Tell City come to mind in our conference.

Any school that has girls/boys soccer, marching band and football, should have turf. Sounds like the majority of the  MSC is finally getting that figured out, the rest will follow suit.

Tough sell if it’s just for the football team and the school (and community in turn) has to foot the bill.

How many of the PLAC/MSC teams do NOT have a soccer program?? Is Brownstown the only one??
