LOL @ counting wins over PSU and Michigan as top 25 wins.  Well done.

What’s the justification for Georgia being 9? They beat two top 25 teams (who aren’t currently ranked) and have been blown out against any real competition. Usually when you beat a top 25 team, they drop. I don’t get how Northwestern beats Wisconsin and jumps 11 spots and then IU beats Wisconsin at Wisconsin with a backup a QB and doesn’t move an inch while Wisconsin drops completely out? There’s no rhyme or reason to any of their justifications.

  2. Not sure it matters if OSU wins the B10 or not. OSU is getting into the CFB as long as they have a zero in the loss column. One could argue that Iowa is a better game right now than Northwestern. Why not just let IU/NW play in the B10 championship based on the rules agreed to in the beginning of the year?

And while we’re on the talk of the CFB, what is the love for the Big 12? Iowa State at 7 with two losses is laughable. CFB head of committed cited IU’s lack of wins against the top 25 as a reason for no movement? Dude, they’ve knocked 3 teams out of the top 25 this year. Alabama and....IU are the only two teams college football this year to beat at least 3 teams in the top 25. Selection committee is keeping Oklahoma alive in the event Clemson loses to ND.

Allen is 2-2 (likely about to be 2-2) against Purdue and as this thread title indicates, neither team is tearing it up in the 2021 class thus far.  Slow down.

This is theoretically IU's best recruiting class of al-time in terms of average raw talent. Yes, the class doesn't rank well on the national scene because it currently only has 13 commits, but IU only loses 14 seniors this year that technically have a another eligibility if they want. But this is the deepest IU team I've ever seen and that speaks to Allen. Not many teams go into Madison and win very often, let alone with a back up QB down two offensive lineman.

I've never seen a few weeks of success for a program that has been irrelevant for 30 years go to a fan base's head so quickly.  Wow.

This isn't a culmination of a few weeks. This has been a decade in the making ever since IU started making legitimate financial contributions to its football program right around the beginning of the Fred Glass era. While Kevin Wilson was never the long term answer, he moved IU from B10 cellar to at least competitive. He paved the way for Tom Allen who has completely changed the IU football culture. And while I don't think IU will win 7-8 conference games a year consistently, they've overtaken Purdue.

They're not going in opposite directions. Next year has been seen by many Boiler fans as the make or break year as Brohm's first good recruiting class will be on campus for three seasons and his first full class will be on campus for four. Purdue wasn't supposed to be very good this season anyway.

You don't really believe that do you? IU won 8 games last year (and likely to duplicate it again in a shortened year) and is building national momentum. Purdue fans couldn't stop crowing about who good they were going to be this year with a two-headed monster at wideout and an improved OL. Coupled with arguably the easiest schedule in the B10, just about every Purdue fan I knew couldn't talking about how the West went through Lafayette. Well Purdue is 2-4 and avoided their toughest game against Wisconsin.

And records probably aren't even the biggest concern. It's the overall demeanor and culture. Jeff Brohm looks absolutely lost on the sideline. His team plays with zero emotion, guys are opting out left and right, and are extremely undisciplined. Curious as to why you think next year will be any better for Purdue. They most certainly lose Rondale and while GK and Bell are terrific individual talents, the lack of development across the board is staggering. It's almost non-existent. Jeff Brohm, the QB whisperer and offensive genius has yet to recruit and develop a QB and his play-calling is downright inept. Heads are starting to roll in West Lafayette and as it stands now, Brohm has no control over his program.

On the other hand, IU is slated to return 75% of it's 2 deep (theoretically everyone could return given its a free year) and will be a top 15,20 ranked team going into next year.

What are your serious expectations for Purdue next year? Going .500? Unless the OOC schedule is very favorable (I don't know) I don't see it.

I think making any gross/overriding assumptions based on 2020 is a slippery slope.

    Lets wait and see.

Wait and see more than fair. But the gap between Indiana and UM/Penn State is a lot closer than the gap between UM/Penn State and Ohio State. With heads rolling in Ann Arbor and Happy Valley, Indiana has the potential to close the gap even more if they can keep the momentum. I don’t ever expect IU to routinely beat those two, but don’t think this year is an aberration.

McCahill was a stud. Loved the wsy he played.... but he's not even in Donnie's ballpark. The coaches got that one right.

I don’t think anyone is going to argue that McCulley isn’t the more talented player with more potential at the next level and beyond, but if the award is supposed to go to the senior that played the QB position the best in 2020, it’s McCahill and it’s not really close.

No they can't.  Sorry.  2020 is an anomaly and while I agree with your premise that they can "go bowling every year", 9-10 wins 2-3 times per decade is the ceiling in my opinion.

The Big Ten East will rebound and the Hoosiers will be lucky to get one of the big three (OSU, Michigan, PSU) annually.  To get to 10 wins that means running the table.  9 means they have room for one more slip up.

Make no mistake, what Allen has done this year is amazing but 2020 is the exception, and not the rule.

9-10 over the top but don’t see why going 8-9 every year is out of the question? Assuming their non-conference schedule doesn’t beef up that’s been 3 easy wins. I think IU will be better than Maryland and Rutgers for the foreseeable future and not sold on MSU either. There’s 5-6 right there. Purdue and IU are going in opposite directions as programs and depending on the other two cross-over games, I think 8-9 is realistic even if they lose to the Big 3 every year.

    https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Football/CompositeTeamRankings/

Both schools have dropped 10 to 12 positions in the lates rankings?

Yes, COVID is wreaking havoc with everything form practice to games played to recruiting, but these latest rankings are not encouraging., especially for Indiana given their great success this year and all the attention and focus on Tom Allen.

IU has stockpiled a lot of young talent, but slipping into the 60s is cause for concern.  I would think IU and PU should both be firmly entrenched in the mid 40s, but we are nowhere near there

What is the spin on this?

    Surely there are some explanations.

Small classes. IU has 13 commits as does Purdue and the rest of these schools have ~20. IU's average recruit rank is 86.86 per the composite which would rank 7th. But class rankings, especially 247, is built on quantity not quality. IU does have a Florida State transfer who is immediately eligible that was a 5 star ranked 48th overall in the 2017 class that doesn't factor into the recruiting rankings.

If we're getting technical, this is IU's best recruiting class of all-time based on the average rating of each player.

But also , you have to know the Shelf was bare , of recruits , when Brohm took the job.  He had some left over Talent to work with but Nobody had the Boilers on their short list to play for. Previous coach couldn’t attract flies. So a big gap in recruits is rearing it’s ugly head.
Time will give us a better overview. I’m still not on the dump coach bandwagon.

I can see that being excuse in years 1 and 2, but fact of the matter is that Brohm was better with players from a coach "who couldn't attract flies". Brohm is about to enter year 5 and is regressing. His first full cycle of recruits are seniors. Recruiting talent hasn't been Brohm's issues, it's developing said talent that is a glaring weakness. Moore, Bell, Karlaftis are all-world talents that were college reasy from day 1, but the rest have been significantly held back by Brohm inability to develop them.

  11. Brohm is in over his head I’m afraid (although I’m not mad about it). Looks completely lost on the sidelines, play calling is inept, and defense and special teams are new levels of embarrassment every week.

Brohm is going to get at least two more years regardless of what happens because Purdue can ill-afford to buyout his contract that he basically swindled the athletic department with. Very good chance Purdue finishes last place the next two years in the B10.

if CG did not throw pick 6, If CG did not miss easy field goal, ... CG Wins easy. Both sides could If all day long. At the end of day Cathedral QB Had 126 yds passing and 2 yds rushing

But Mr. Football isn’t, or at least shouldn’t, come down to one game. McCahill’s overall body of work against the likely hardest schedule in the Midwest is better than Steele’s.

I’m still on record in saying that Steele wins the award.

How many of those QB's were down by multiple scores in the 2nd half and needed to throw to play catch-up and abandon the run? Did McCahill have his best game against CG? Nope. Did he have a terrible game? Nope. It was 13-10 Cathedral with the lead with 1:19 in the 4th qtr. We all know what happened from there the Irish decided to go for it and selected a play Coach Peebles admitted he wish he would have picked a different play. How many teams had Center Grove on the ropes with 1:19 left in the 4th in an eventual 17-13 loss. McCahill did nothing to lose the game had no turnovers and played well enough for them to win.

By the way McCahill was 12 of 19 for 123 yds. 63 Comp % and 10.3 yds per play 1 TD 0 Int's.

Couple key drops early in the game probably lost him some yardage as well. #13 might have went the distance on a slant route on the opening drive if he catches it and #22 dropped a big pass on 3rd and medium at the end of first quarter that would have been a 20+ yard gain.

Against Best defense in the state of Indiana (Center Grove) Cathedral Nathan Mccahill had the 7th best performance

    1. Lawrence North Donaven Mcculle
      • Pass: 16-28, 256 yds, 1 tds
    2. Ben Davis J'uan Swanson - Jr
      •  Pass: 17-27, 223 yds, 1 tds
    3. Ben Davis J'uan Swanson - Jr (simi-state)
      • Pass:  15-30, 207 yds, 2 tds
    4. Pike Anthony Cialdella - Sr
      • Pass: 15-33, 195 yds, 1 tds
    5. Westfield  Maximus Webster - SR
      • Pass: 16-28, 160 yds, 1 tds
    6. Decatur Central  Peyton Horsley - Sr
      •  Pass:  9-19, 157 yds, 1 tds
    7. Cathedral Nathan Mccahill - Sr
      • Pass: 10-17, 126 yds, 1 tds

If Cathedral converts the 4th and 1 and wins the game, pretty easy to look past his one pedestrian game. Would possibly be a unanimous pick if Cathedral went 15-0 against that schedule.

  15. No disrespect to Steele because in the end he’s still my pick to win, but you could make the case that Steele was only the 3rd or 4th best player on his team this year. Watching the CG-Cathedral game live, Austin Booker was the best player on the field that night. Curry, a junior, is ineligible for the award. Jackson didn’t have a great night statistically and made several mistakes, but atoned for it with his epic last minute drive.

Even if Steele plays later into games not sure the argument changes much. Obviously more appealing stats but still.

this should be cause for concern....yes they do improve as the season, but the last two years they have started miserably

Is it really though? Ben Davis was already an extremely young team to begin with, couple that with their COVID issues and lack of preparation against not only good but senior laden opponents, it’s not that shocking. They were playing just fine by seasons end once they got their feet under them.

Never thought I would see the day when the suburban school with 2700 kids took it to programs like WC/BD and beat them into submission.  2021-22 will be the deciding factors to whether or not it is a trend or just a speed bump.  I know where you stand...

(Calling this thread now for over 100 responses with over 50 percent of them being insults @DT for his "hot take."  Folks so easily "offended" yet play right into his hands.)

It is a ridiculous hot take. Center Grove had/has a phenomenal junior and senior class, even for their program standard. Everything and every one in high school football is cyclical and Warren and Ben Davis aren’t spared either. Both teams were extremely young this year but by years end were playing some of the best football in the state, sans Center Grove. I fully expect Center Grove to repeat next year, given the talent they return, but BD and Warren will most certainly close the gap.

I agree they have the most upside.  Could they also potentially benefit from the train wreck that has become South Bend Community schools?  (I mean if a kid from the east side of Indianapolis can “re-locate” 20 miles west and lead a 1A school to a state title, why not?)

I’m also intrigued by Merrillville going forward.  Never thought I’d say this with a straight face but if they can keep the gravy train of Illinois/Region transfers rolling in, they could make some noise annually.

You don’t think Indy area public’s have athletes playing 20 miles from there house? Interesting.
