Spotlite on The Duneland - Nice Opening Week

Very nice opening week for the long beleaguered DAC.

Merrillville looks to be loaded at the skill positions and has a D1 lineman to blast open holes for a stable of fast young running backs.  The Pirates easily handled rival Andrean 48-20.  Merrillville resumes its long rivalry with former conference juggernaut Hobart this week at Demarre Stadium in what should be a packed house for the resumption of the Regions All Time Greatest Rivalry.

Valparaiso continues to impress and looks to build on its semi state appearance last year, as the Vikings opened with a 34-14 win over nemesis Penn.  Bill Marshall really has this program moving and the  Vikings, now in their first year at 5A, will be a strong contender to rep the north in the state championship game.

Michigan City smoked outmanned Griffith 60-7.  Its time for this series to end as Griffith is starting to play down to the level of its new conference and MC continues to get stronger.  The Wolves host Bart Curtis and the Warsaw Tigers this week in what should be the DAC Game of the Week.

Lake Central showed up nicely in its opener, ripping rival Munster 37-7.  The Mustang football program may have reached an all time low, which is a real travesty for NWI football fans and Munster people in general.

Crown Point and Lowell played their usual rugged opener, with the Red Devels once again coming out on top 21-19.  CP will be heavily favored at home against 4A Highland this week.

Laporte struggled in new Coach Jeremy Lowery's first game, losing big to local rival New Prairie 48-14.  The Slicers travel to penn this week.

Portage did what they always do, lose to Mishawaka in non conference play, while Chesterton stopped former DAC foe Hobart 21-13.

It should be a real 3 way dog fight between Merrillville, Valpo and Michigan City this year in The DAC.  Look for some great matchups in the coming weeks.  Perhaps the venerable Duneland is on the comeback trail.  That would be great for Northwest Indiana football.
