3 years into NIL, IU among best in basketball resources, punches above weight in football

https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/indiana/2024/05/28/iu-basketball-nil-money-among-best-in-country-football-competitive-indiana-hoosiers-scott-dolson/73773775007/

Quote

As the transfer portal rumor mill powered up through the spring, Indiana found itself pulled under the wheel.

The Hoosiers — remaking their roster primarily through aggressive transfer recruiting — quickly involved themselves in some of the highest-profile portal pursuits. At one point it was even suggested IU put a seven-figure offer in front of one of its top targets.

That particularly rumor was eventually squashed by more reliable reporting. But its believability came from more than just the fishing-stories nature of NIL scuttlebutt, where just enough of these eye-popping numbers are real for none of them to ever be fully debunked as fake.

Thanks to organized efforts across multiple collectives and in conjunction with an athletics department headed by a director with an extensive background in fundraising, Indiana has built an NIL apparatus competitive in men’s basketball with virtually any program in the country, and as part of a wider NIL structure that’s believed to punch well above its weight in the moneyed Big Ten.

....

But according to industry insiders surveyed for this story, Indiana may well have a total resource pool via their partner collectives, Hoosiers For Good and Hoosiers Connect, that lands basketball in or close to the top five nationally. It’s what helped build a transfer-plus-spring-recruiting class as robust as any in the country, and transform IU from a program approaching crisis to one that could well compete for a Big Ten title next year.

That’s thanks to a concerted effort between Athletic Director Scott Dolson and the apparatus behind Hoosiers For Good/Hoosiers Connect (they are run under the same umbrella).

The website nil-ncaa.com builds annual estimates of collective funding by school, using publicly available NIL data and cross-referencing it with fundraising numbers reported annually to the NCAA.

That data is largely limited to public schools, which are subject to records requests and information-access processes. But the site builds models around schools for which it has said information, and its estimates suggest Indiana sits in a comfortable place in the Big Ten.

Overall, the website estimates IU to be one of just six conference schools — Pac-12 arrivals included — with eight-figure overall NIL resources. The Hoosiers sit comfortably behind football powers Michigan (approx. $16.3 million) and Ohio State (approx. $20.2 million), but arrive at a number surprisingly close to Penn State. While the website estimates Penn State’s collective funding at nearly $13.8 million, Indiana comes in north of $13.6 million.

...

“As the rules changed, at some point, it started to feel more comfortable,” Dolson said. “They opened it up where the athletic department could get more involved. We could fundraise in general and we could have our fundraisers, as they’re out there talking to people, really sort of advocate for (supporting NIL).

“That really helped.”

The results are basketball-specific NIL efforts that are believed to rival virtually any program in the country, and football-specific resources comfortably more than double what they were a year ago. Plus significant investments in women’s basketball, and Hoosiers For Good/Hoosiers Connect’s continued involvement with non-revenue sports across both the department’s men’s and women’s profiles.

The only certainty in name, image and likeness is that no amount of funding will ever be enough. And while collectives won’t cease operations, their focus will likely shift once revenue sharing arrives. But three years in, IU has managed itself to a necessarily competitive position.

“We understand we have to be really good at NIL to survive, but at the same time I’m proud about the way we’ve done it,” Dolson said. “When recruits come here, they know Indiana cares.”

Indiana is favored by 3 points on the road at UCLA. Not sure what to think about that. If IU wins that game, 10-2 could be a possibility… 9-3 is realistic. Not sure what to think about all this…

I also was a little surprised to see IU is a slight favorite.  First time IU and UCLA have squared off on the gridiron.

Read a good article today how excellent the fan travel is looking for all Big 10 schools traveling to LA and Pasadena this season.  The article featured IU, Iowa and Minnesota.  Indicated in Iowa, demand so significant that American has scheduled a round trip direct flight from to LA from Cedar Rapids.

Indiana University investigating abuse allegations against former IU Athletics doctor: https://fox59.com/news/indiana-university-investigating-abuse-allegations-against-former-iu-athletics-doctor/

Quote

Indiana University has launched an investigation after a former IU men’s basketball player accused an athletics doctor of touching him inappropriately during annual physical exams.

In a statement released by IU on Wednesday, the university confirmed it is investigating the allegations centered on Dr. Brad Bomba Sr., who worked as a physician for various IU athletic teams during the late 1990s. This included the men’s basketball team where he was employed as a contracted physician.

The former college basketball player has accused Bomba of allegedly subjecting him to “inappropriate prostate and rectal exams during annual physicals.”The student who came forward said the alleged abuse by Bomba affected other basketball student-athletes under his care.

IU said it has hired the international law firm Jones Day as it begins a thorough and independent investigation into the allegations. This investigation will focus on witness interviews and feature a comprehensive analysis of all available records.

The independent review will also consult with medical experts as it works to uncover if the conduct was appropriate or necessary and if any colleagues within IU’s athletic department were aware of the alleged misconduct and what their responses were at the time.

The university said it would not provide any comments on the allegations as the investigation runs its course.

IU urged anyone with information to call Jones Day at 888-392-2296 or email IUinvestigation@JonesDay.com.

IU’s full statement can be read below:

“Indiana University maintains a core set of values that guide our actions in pursuit of our mission as the state of Indiana’s flagship university. Among those values are an unwavering commitment to integrity and ethical conduct, the relentless search for truth, a respect for the dignity of others, and accountability for the human resources and relationships entrusted to IU. It is these bedrock values that compel the institution to share an allegation brought forward by a former student-athlete.

The university recently received a letter from legal counsel on behalf of a former IU men’s basketball student-athlete, who competed at IU several decades ago. The letter includes specific allegations against Dr. Brad Bomba, Sr., who served as a contracted physician for IU athletic teams, including the men’s basketball program for several decades, concluding in the late 1990s. The former student-athlete alleges that he was subjected to inappropriate prostate and rectal exams during annual physicals with Dr. Bomba, Sr., something that he also alleges was a practice for all basketball student-athletes assigned to Dr. Bomba, Sr. for physical examinations.

In response to learning of the allegation, the university retained Jones Day, an international law firm with experience in sensitive and similar investigations, to conduct an independent review. The review will include witness interviews, a review of available documentation and engagement with medical experts to determine: 1) the background facts related to the annual physicals of IU student athletes conducted by Dr. Bomba, Sr.; 2) if the conduct was appropriate, necessary, or within the standard of care; and 3) what medical professionals and athletic department or university officials were aware of the conduct and, if warranted, what action did they take.

To be clear, this is a fully independent and comprehensive investigation that will follow the facts. Indiana University will abide by its findings and take any warranted actions. To protect the integrity of the investigation, the institution will refrain from further comment while the review is ongoing.

Jones Day has established a phone number (888-392-2296) and email (IUinvestigation@JonesDay.com) for anyone wishing to provide information — anonymously, if desired.

We ask for the IU community to have patience as we search for the truth and to have confidence that the university’s actions will be consistent with our values.”

Nice win on a long road trip. Rourke really looked good in this one too. I liked seeing the run game going well. Penalties were tough to see. Some head scratching interpretations of things as well.

It’s gonna be a fun Fall in Bloomington. IU administration may have just gotten this one right.

My oldest is a Freshman at IU this year. I much rather enjoy a Fall day with her in scenic Bloomington this year than take in the clown show at Purdue. Offense looked very good in Pasadena tonight. Really intriged by the new hire.

Why in the world are you sharing this in this thread? You truly are here just to be a troll. Absolutely zero reason to share that in this thread.

That is the most fun I've had watching an IU football game on TV in a long time.  I really like what Cignetti is doing in his short time in Btown.  Very different mentality.

Go Hoosiers!

I'll start another thread concerning this budding scandal if you would like.

Indiana could be 6-0 going into Maryland. I'll be on the conservative side and say 5-1.

Rourke is looking really good, seems to be an upgrade over Sorsby.

Cross, Price, Sarratt, Williams and Cooper Jr looking solid. I hope McCulley can get healthy.

Defense is looking fine.

Just need to cut back on penalties.

Maryland is game 5, Nebraska is game 7 but understood your point. Given their play to start the season, it’d almost feel like a disappointment if IU weren’t undefeated heading into the Nebraska game (who also should be undefeated and a top 20 team). They’ll be favored in each of their next 3 games.

I appreciate the excitement about IU....loved what I witnessed Sat night.  BUT, history would tell us to approach the season with some degree of skepticism.

One game at a time...next team up is Charlotte.

Coach Cig so far has delivered what he has been saying.  His mouth is somewhat unfiltered (not with curse words but just remarks about opponents and things).  He's going to be the most hated coach in the B1G 18.  And I love it.  IU football is becoming relevant for basically the 1st time in their history.

He’s got nothing to lose. If they lose, it’s pretty much what IU has always been. But his talk seems to be instilling a confidence in them that the program hasn’t had for a very long time.

IU is going to go into at least 6 of their final 8 games expecting to win. Even the Michigan game won’t seem as daunting given Michigan’s style of play and the fact it’s at home
