Would Luers Consider Leaving The SAC?

Guest DT

Recommended Posts

2A Luers has been outscored by 6A conference opponents Carroll and Homestead by the combined score of 93-0 this season

At what point do the overwhelming numbers advantage of the mega schools completely mitigate the inherent built in advantages enjoyed by the small private and disrupt the competitive balance sought after by conferences and the IHSAA?

This situation reminds of Hobart and The Duneland.   Hobart, by far the smallest school in the DAC, dominated conference play for two decades.  Size finally caught up with the Brick program and the school finally left for the smaller Lake athletic

Could Luers join a smaller conference, or go independent?

Is the program happy to still compete against the big 5a and 6a schools despite the huge enrollment disparity?

No one ever thought Hobart would leave The DAC

Or that Mishawaka would leave the NIC

Or that Griffith would leave The NCC

Or that Vincennes and Jasper would leave The Big 8

Or that Nebraska and Penn State would join the Big Ten

changes occur for a myriad of reasons.

Times change and so do priorities

I wouldn't be shocked to hear that Luers might consider a move.  It may be in their long term best interests.

Would be interesting to see Luers and Concordia go to The NE8 in a package deal.

That would give the SAC the opportunity to schedule OOC games, which many of the schools apparently would like to do.

Luers has no control over how big the other 6A conference members eventually get.

When you get to a point where you have 2500 kids representing a school on one side and 500 on the other, something seems strangely out of balance.

Thats where this is heading.

Just sayin'

Luers is better than half the schools in the sac year in and year out anyway. Enrollment doesn't play as big of a factor as you might think.

Times and attitudes change.  15 years ago, the pp zealots were happy to take on all comers, of any size and color

Now, the pps have become more insular.  Take a look at the Circle city Conference as a prime example.   They are more and more competing amongst themselves.

I think this attitude will continue to take hold as new leadership emerges within the group of pps

We do not see as many pp-public high level matchups like we used to.

Center Grove - Roncalli.    Carmel - Cathedral.  Etc.

It's unfortunate but it has happened.

Is it too early to put Scott Marsh on the hot seat?

That .362 career winning percentage is hard to ignore.

If anyone would want to leave the SAC, it would be Northrop, Wayne, North Side, or South Side. They might have a good season once or twice a decade but it's hard to overcome the size and tradition of a Snider, Homestead, Carroll, or Dwenger or the advantages of being a private school like a Luers, Concordia, and Dwenger. I think Northrop has the potential to be on that level and compete due to their size, but there's just not a lot of wiggle room to move up unless you have the perfect storm of good players and coaches.

I'd say no that they wouldn't consider it. They have been competitive in the league recently and it prepares them well for post season play (especially when they are 2A). As mentioned above by Frozen Tundra, Northrop, Wayne, North Side, and South Side usually get beat by them so that is 4 of the 9 opponents that can be W's. They upset one of the bigger 4 and they're over .500 and that is really respectable for their size.

I’m not gonna comment on the other aspects to this, but a lot of people anticipated Vincennes and Jasper leaving the BIG8

it has been an ongoing discussion for years how the BIG8 should disband and join another conference. It has been a topic of discussion here every year and this year it finally happened....but it only happened because Illinois moved to a districts system for their postseason and what not....well not yet but they are going to. That left Mt Carmel (Illinois) in conflict and one thing led to another and they removed themselves from the BIG8 bringing it to 6 teams. From there Jasper and Vincennes joined the SIAC.  Bville opted out of that keeping the SIAC at 10 instead of 12 with the addition of Gibson Southern. The 4 remaining BIG8 teams agreed to join the PAC and the PAC is now 2 divisions of 6 teams each.

it was a wild offseason but by no means did any not think the BIG8 would dissolve lol. Because a lot of us did and were repeatedly asking for it

The two teams that crushed them this year Luers beat both last year. Go stir your ridiculous crap somewhere else.

Seriously? That's kinda harsh. This is actually a good topic.

If Luers and Concordia were to leave, the SAC would go after Huntington North and someone else. The ease of scheduling with a 10 team conference will trump the exciting out-of-conference match-ups.

Agree. Concordia and Luers have had more success than those 4. But they could still make a case for leaving based on enrollment.

Conclusion: Luers is having a bad year. They beat both Homestead and Carroll last year. Both the Spartans and the Chargers have really good teams this year, but I'm not sold that those two programs are built for year in year out dominance like Snider and Dwenger. So yeah, I think Luers will be back and will beat those two schools again. Regardless of Luers size, there has been many years where they had more talent then the likes of Snider and the other larger schools.

HN playing in the SAC would be brutal. Geographically, yes it makes sense, but that's it.
