Purdue faculty and staff – and maybe even students – could be barred from wagering on Boilermaker teams, President Mitch Daniels said.

Daniels released a statement late Thursday saying that Purdue’s trustees will consider a policy, of some sort, at their Oct. 10 meeting on the West Lafayette campus.

Daniels said the policy was still in the works and no specifics have been released. He said some faculty members and Purdue athletics department urged the administration to come up with a policy.

The news comes weeks after the first bets were placed at the start of September at Indiana casinos and sports books. The Indiana General Assembly legalized gambling on sporting events, including NCAA games. The Indiana Gaming Commission permitted 13 locations – 10 casinos and three off-track betting sites – to start taking bets on Sept. 1.

It was unclear whether the proposed policy was tied to legalized sports betting in Indiana.

Daniels said any policy regulating gambling on Purdue games or Purdue student-athletes or coaches would apply to all faculty and staff across the university’s system, which includes the West Lafayette campus and Purdue Fort Wayne and Purdue Northwest. He said it would apply to full-time, part-time or temporary employees. Daniels said a policy also could extend to non-student-athletes attending Purdue.

“Our goal and that of our Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to operate with the greatest of integrity and sportsmanship,” Daniels said in a prepared statement. “In that spirit and out of respect for our student-athletes and coaches, we believe this is the right action to take to reduce the potential for any student-athlete to feel compromised, for any implication of profiteering or inside information, or other problems.”

How the university would police a ban on gambling on Purdue games wasn’t immediately clear.
