Let's start it out with a sad, sad story:  https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/j-j-mccarthy-out-for-season-with-knee-injury

Quote

Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss his rookie season.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced in his Wednesday press conference that McCarthy’s knee surgery revealed that the quarterback required a full repair of his meniscus, which will sideline him for all of 2024.

McCarthy was on the field for 30 snaps in Minnesota’s preseason opener against the Raiders. He completed 11-of-17 passes for 188 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

With McCarthy out for the year, Sam Darnold is now in line to start for Minnesota throughout 2024.

Heartbroken for JJ.  This is why I’ll never fault a kid for leaving early and getting paid.

Agree. It's rendered bowl games boring and irrelevant. But if I'm a kid, I'm getting paid. Period.

However. Does the university have the right to say, "finish the season, or pay back all of the tuition and room and board that was provided to you with your agreement to play football"? Of course smart kid would take the NFL money and pay back the university, but I would think that type of verbiage would be fair when the player signs his letter of intent.

You are getting perilously close to the point where scholarship athletes become university employees. And the universities don’t want that, for one simple reason: Can you say “union?”

Rondale:  Season Ending Knee

Charlie Jones:  Taking a lot of 1st team reps:  Carted Off:  Knee

Tyrone Tracy:   Was trending to be involved heavily for the Giants as Hybrid player getting 50/50 shares (fantasy speak).   Week to Week

This is why I'll forever have mad respect for Saquon Barkley. New he was an early Round 1 pick. Went out in a nonplayoff bowl game and balled out for his university one last time. I understand both decisions, play or don't play. A lot of respect for the guys that suit up one last time for the university they committed to.

I'm curious to see how this will impact the new CF playoffs. There will be some teams getting in that have no shot at winning a Title. I wouldn't be shocked to see some of their NFL talent opting to sit out.

Tragic but you're probably right. Unfortunate to think you made it to the playoffs and still don't think you have a chance. Hopefully the 2018 UCF team can inspire some of those teams to give it a shot, but when players are saying even the playoffs aren't worth playing for is unfortunate.

I don’t see this.  Quite the opposite actually.

probably a different thread question;   Can NIL deals require bowl non opt outs?

I mentioned this a while back that scholarships will likely be replaced by contracts. And as Bob said, that leads to them becoming employees. I guess an NIL deal could have those considerations from a company not connected to the school. But I think if a school adds that requirement, it becomes more of a contract.

Another hit for the Wolverines. Ben Davis grad and Bengals RB Chris Evans was carted off the field during the Bears/Bengals live scrimmage at Halas Hall. He's out for the year with a torn patella tendon.

Talk about being drafted to horrible situations

1.  Terrible new Owner

2.  Impatient, never should of been start of the ruining process in year 1, just sit and deal with it and DEVELOP

3.  Fired coaches/GM who made trade, that brought him in

4.  Bench 2 games in to year 2.

and the BEARS STILL have their 2nd round pick that could be #1 overall AGAIN

The worst part is the fired GM was forced by said owner to draft Young.

I remember reading about the GM not wanting to take Young and was forced into it by Tepper. But, I completely forgot he's the entitled jackass who was fined 300K for pouring beer on a Jax fan from his Suite.

How can the Panthers 2nd round pick turn into a #1 overall? I don't recall that being a possibility.

not #1 overall,  just number 1 in round 2, so the 33rd overall pick sorry if I was unclear on that message

Copy. The Steelers pick is now trending to be a 4th rounder with the amount of PT Fields is getting. I doubt Tomlin is going to bench him for Wilson at this point unless Fields completely unravels.
