The sanctity of Friday nights

Recommended Posts

I have long railed against ESPN/NCAA for bringing college games to Friday nights, yea I’m looking at you IU. Now the NFL is getting in the act. I suggest you join my merry band of pirates, screw the Big10, screw IU, screw TV, dare I say it screw….the man….there I said it. Go to a local school of your choosing tonight, plop down your 6-7 bucks, spend a 20 at the concession stand and enjoy the hell out of kids who just love a game!  Who’s with me?

Great post. Pump dollars into your local community. A million dollars is way too much to tote a football, I'd much prefer supporting local high school kids.

I know he's not the most popular person on this board, but Tom Allen, when he was at IU, actually spoke out against the Big Ten's decision to start scheduling games on Fridays. Seems silly.

Honestly IO, the only way I’m watching or listening to IU play football is if somebody pays me.

Barring the unexpected, I plan on being at a HS football game every Friday night through Thanksgiving weekend…like most every year.

Fridays are for the Flying Jets (sometimes it can also be everyone else listed on my profile), Saturdays are for the Wolverines (Michigan first & others I root for before, after, or at half), and Sundays (after service)/Mondays/Thursdays are for the 49ers. Saturday mornings are youth tackle and usually Tuesdays are for flag (this year it's all over the place).

It's not IU at all. All the B1G and NFL. It's pretty disgusting if you ask me.

I'll be broadcasting the Sheridan game tonight, and the Packers game will be on a monitor in the booth.  Why not just embrace that ALL football is back?

You understand how high school sports are funded…..right?

I completely agree, no chance I would watch/go to IU vs. WIU over HS game.

Why can't they play NFL games on..... Thursdays, Sundays, and Mondays... unless it's some Holiday?

While we're here... what's it like for you guys that root for an out-of-state NFL team and can't even go to that team's games? idk. seems weird to me.

Root for the Colts.

I’d rather the NFL stick to Sundays and Mondays. The only exceptions would be the season opener on a Thursday and Thanksgiving games.

Being a fan of an out-of-state team isn’t a problem. Saves me money. I’ve been to a home game, though, and it wasn’t cheap. Go Pack Go!

And how do you watch them? fork over $500 a year for Sunday ticket? Are you from WI? I just don't understand it (not that it matters).

I agree, dump the TNF all together. Thursday night opener, Thanksgiving, (I do love the Black Friday game), and then Xmas just to stick to the NBA. Next Thursday night, there should be no game, I'm with you there.

Add to that, this game is only available on Peacock, meaning if you don't shell out the extra $, you won't be able to watch it. This, plus those mostly awful Thursday night games, which are now on Prime TV, you'd think the NFL would be losing a lot of it's audience. Play 'em on Sunday afternoon (i don't care for the Sunday night games either), Monday night, and Thanksgiving Thursdays.

I would never pay for Sunday Ticket. Can’t justify it. However, I have friends/family that do and will let me come over and watch.

No connection to Wisconsin. There were several factors that led me to the Packers though.

1. My dad isn’t a Colts fan. The Colts didn’t move to Indy until he was 21 so he already had a team. He and my uncle never got along so they always rooted for the rival to the other’s teams. Since my uncle was a Bengals fan, my dad was a Steelers fan.

2. Player marketing works on kids. When I discovered football in the 90s, Brett Favre was one of the top players. Loved watching him play and loved the Packers’ uniforms.

3. I was a rebellious kid. While I have always been loyal to an Indiana college team, I strayed with pro sports because I felt the Colts, Pacers, and Reds were too bland. I went with the Packers, St. Louis Cardinals (due to the marketing of Mark McGwire as well as my childhood appreciation of cardinals), and whatever team Shaquille O’Neal played for (although I haven’t watched the NBA in almost 20 years).

We already have Peacock so I can’t say I’m spending money on it just to watch the Packers play.

I've never understood why they would compete with HS football. They are eliminating tens of thousands of potential paying fans who would rather watch their local HS.

It's the TV dollars that are driving it and the conferences are being paid big for network coverage. Still, I hated that they have encroached on the night that had been reserved strictly for high school games. I'm taking in the Bloomington South/TH North game tonight and I am recording IU's game for later viewing.

While I appreciate your condescending response, my point was that with technology now, you can watch everything. Go to the high school games, and we all walk around with TVs in our pockets.
