Indiana football quarterback Tayven Jackson has entered the transfer portal, per a report by 247Sports' Matt Zenitz.

Jackson, the former Center Grove standout who transferred to IU from Tennessee, was Kurtis Rourke's backup this season, and helped lead the Hoosiers in the second half of the Nebraska win and started the victory over Washington.

Jackson, the younger brother of IU basketball star Trayce Jackson-Davis, completed 27-of-37 passes for 349 yards, four touchdowns and one interception this season. He also rushed for three scores.

Rourke is out of eligibility and Curt Cignetti and staff have been entertaining potential transfer targets, including Cal's Fernando Mendoza (older brother to IU freshman Alberto Mendoza) and Penn State's Beau Pribula.

Jackson's decision to enter the portal only increases the need for the Hoosiers to add a veteran quarterback (maybe two) this offseason.

Along with Alberto Mendoza, IU has another former Center Grove state champion QB Tyler Cherry on roster. He, like Mendoza, redshirted this season.

Hmm, it looked to me like young Mr. Jackson was the heir apparent to Mr. Rourke.   What happened?  Did Mr. Cignetti tell him he's not good enough?

It would be wise for the best quarterbacks in the country to start choosing mid-major schools where they know they'll get an opportunity to showcase themselves. How do these quarterbacks develope if they don't get an opportunity to play? If Notre Dame brings in another transfer, I'm out the door if I'm Angeli or Carr. Good for Jackson for getting the hell out of there. Loyalty is dead!

My respect for Dabo grows by the day.

Rumor is Cal’s starting QB Fernando Mendoza is committing to the Hoosiers. We shall see….

Screw that. Next man up.

So the new trend will be for the best quarterbacks to start at a mid-major and work their way up. I guess it's just the way it is, I don't have to like it.

Clemson is officially my fifth favorite team. ND, IU, Ball State, Purdue, Clemson. I love the way Dabo does it, loyalty to those committed from the beginning.

Not a fan of becoming this dependent on the portal for a QB. Jackson deserves a shot as a starter. They NEED to focus on building/improving the o line and run game.

If Mendoza comes over, he’s the starting QB for the University of California…they are a member of the ACC, a P4 conference. Cal is no mid major.

I think you know what I mean. If I'm a high profile quarterback I'm sure as hell not committing to Notre Dame or IU my freshmen year. I may never get a chance to develope with their history of bringing in new quarterbacks. If I'm Carr or Angeli, I'm bailing. It's no wonder Jackson bolted. He saw the writing on the wall.

He didn’t recruit Jackson and not sure why Cig isn’t warm with him. Had to factor in why he left. He has  talked highly about both frosh QB’s he did recruit and guessing they will both be redshirted. For reasons only he knows, he doesn’t feel either has earned the keys to the car. Thus he’s looking for the experience.

Sorry, didn’t know what you meant referring Mendoza coming from a mid major school.

For the 30th time, Jackson is not a top QB for a quality D1 team. Would love to see him be that, but he just isn’t.

You may be right, just tough to see Indiana kids going out of State to start as well as kids they get deciding to leave. I guess the same could be said for Donoven McCulley. I was really hopeful both of them would do well at IU.

I’m not as negative on Jackson. The young man is tall, can run, and throws a beautiful ball. Hope he lands where he can get on the field. Was watching Connor Baselak last night for Bowling Green. His IU experience wasn’t great, but he looked like he enjoyed slinging the ball around for the Falcons. Last night for 390 yds and 3 TD’s.  Sometimes one just has to find their fit.

I have a hard time belieiving that Angeli or Carr can't lead this team with the same efficiency as the last two, if not better. At some point you have to trust the players you recruited. The guys who committed to your program. I get it if your desperate, but that's not Notre Dame.

I like Angeli, but I really want to see what Carr can do. I really hope he pans out, if for no other reason than having the grandson of Lloyd Carr leading Notre Dame is such delicious irony.

Agree, but Angeli's worked really hard for the spot. It's nice having depth, but I like seeing the kids get an opportunity to play. If Carr wins the position, Angeli needs to move on.

This seems like an overreaction. Mendoza was a three star not some top-flight guy. The only mid-major QBs who ever get talked about in the portal are guys from sling-it-around offenses who will be in their 5th/6th year of eligibility. I'm not sure why an elite incoming freshman would see the need to go to a mid-major, pass on oodles of NIL money, and burn a year of eligibility while risking injury. Indiana is going to need an experienced guy next year just like they did this year.

I don't know..ratings had Mendoza the #2 ranked person in the portal.  Throwing for over 3000 yds in his soph more year for Cal doesn't seem to shabby.  Picked IU over Georgia and Miami.  (his home)  I am going to trust in the IU coaching staff on this one.
