Bye Week Kills Big School Season Momentum

1. Why do small schools care that 6A gets a bye and they don't? They're not playing the bigger schools so it's not like they're playing teams with an advantage. They're playing the teams within their class. I know when East was in 4A none of us gave a crap about 6A only having 32 teams and having a bye thrown in. We all knew it's an all-in tournament and we had twice as many teams in 4A. We weren't playing any 6A schools in the tourney. Just play the game and control what you can control.

2. Even if 5A got evened out to 32 teams, what about the other classes? There are 63 teams each in 1A and 2A so one team in each class gets a bye. Should we cry about that and how it's unfair those teams get to rest while everyone else has to play? 4A has 61 teams so three teams get a bye. I haven't heard the other 58 teams complaining about it.

It is the responsibility of the IHSAA to attempt to see that all schools are treated fairly and equitably.  While the schools themselves are not concerned about the bye situation, the governing body, the IHSAA, should be.  It just defies logic that a school with 100 kids on the roster that goes 4 deep at every position gets a week off while a school with 21 that cant even scrimmage in practice has to go out and play a do or die elimination game.  Where's the fairness and equity in that?

You're in a small minority of folks that care. If the schools or the coaches thought it was an issue then something would be done about it.

When Muda mentions all his hegemonic hate, he’s thinking DT and no one else. Besides the fact that you aimlessly seek attention from topics by inciting class riots, success factor nonsense, and general bore-ass retreads, you still have a knack for otherwise condescending content for even the smallest of great football schools. Are recruiting visits to Ivys even newsworthy? Pretend like you’ve been there before. Loser.

The IHSAA is a governing body still ran by the schools.  The schools voted for this and have not once brought up playing a 10th game.

Furthermore, even if there was a week 10, the schools DO NOT have to play.  There have been numerous teams take week 9 off in the past.  By no means are you required to play a full 9-game schedule.

The MIC schedule has done no favors for Warren and trying to find a Week 9 opponent. I know everyone enjoys the CG vs WC Week 1 game, but I bet their coaches don't enjoy having to play a non-conference game Week 9. The last three years WC has played Columbus (OH) Sycamore (W-37-6), Bowling Green (KY) (W-62-7), and Detroit River Rouge (W-24-17).

Perhaps the revenues from that 5A-6A Week 10 schedule could go towards raising officials salaries and recruiting more refs into the game.

A worthwhile effort indeed.  This is something the big 5A and 6A brothers can do to help their little 1A thru 4A brothers down the road.  Its usually the small schools who get screwed the most when there is shortage of officials.

CG really screwed you guys by replacing you with Cathedral.  You got played.  They still have an uber tough week 9 in state opponent, and you are left scrambling for someone else's leftovers.

Why would Bobby Cox give 6A Carmel with 110 kids on the roster a week off and force South Newton with 20 live bodies on the roster to immediately go out and play an elimination game?

Does that make sense?

Oh yes, it just occurred to me.  Last week was recruiting week in The Ivy League and the Carmel kids are booked for trips to Harvard, Yale and Princeton.  Silly me.

Technically speaking, Carmel only has 75 on the playoff roster

as for @DT nobody is making you respond to him, if it is a topic that you see he has started and you're not a fan of it, or its not your cup of tea, simply do not click or reply.

For those of us who focus primarily on big school football, this bye week is a real drag.

It seems to just suck the life out of the season.  You have a lot of meaningless Week 9 games, then you take a week off, and then try to come back performing at peak level.

It just doesn't happen.  Teams lose their sharp edge with too much time off.  Maybe there should be a week off between sectional and regional or regional and semi state.  There are so many early round blowouts that teams dont need 2 or 3 weeks to prepare.

Thoughts?

I do miss not have a game this week but I am happy the players can get heath for playoffs.  The first and maybe second year that 6 a only had 32 teams the bye was the week before state finals.  not sure why ihsaa moved it.

Because, from a player's perspective, that's a long time to have to ponder on and wait for a big game like that. Also, and probably most important, it allows for less games to be played the first week of the tournament so that there's no/less threat of a referee shortage.

While it sounds "noble" to want to get more official.and you wanting "fairness", I have to ask:  how is that fair?  You would force the 5A and 6A teams to play an extra game only to have them turn over their revenue?  Even though I support a 2A program, that doesn't sound very fair to me.  I would think that any AD in their right mind wouldn't agree to that kind of "deal".

Spot on.  The folks at the IHSAA are not on an inferior intellectual level.  If there was a serious problem, they would step in and do something.  It is not our duty or business to police it.

I disagree.  As paying patrons to IHSAA sponsored events we certainly have the business to voice our opinions on how to improve the product.

I gave nothing up.   But since you think this is such a predicament we’re in, you have two options: A) yank your kid out of football or B) put $20 of gas in your car.

a)  All of my kids are now too old for youth or high school football.  Does that mean I should no longer attend high school football games?

b) ?  Please explain.

I was being facetious.  Sorry for the offense; I’m not going to engage in any more attacks, calling people out, or other broodish behavior.  All the best...

Columbus East definitely needed the bye. Our boys are a lot more banged up than in previous years. Regardless, I have no problem with the bye being that particular week. Sure beats 2013 and 2014 where the bye in 6A was the week between semi-state and state. If I was a player on one of those teams playing for a state title I would've hated having to think about that game for two weeks.

Good point-- the IHSAA tried it out that way but this way works better. Plus, with more than 34 teams in 5A this year (& 33 next year), there were two 5A games last Friday which mandated a bye week for the rest.

You guys wouldn't be pitching a fit if nobody got a bye week like it was back in the days when every class had the same number of teams. Does this mean DT & his followers are SOCIALIST??? (i.e. Everybody deserves to be treated exactly the same...if you have something, I should get it too.)

That's exactly why the IHSAA split 6A from 5A. Due to the large enrollment gap (Schools #1-11 at 3000+, schools 45-64 below 1800) & other factors, the largest schools were dominated the 64-team 5A tournament. So they added 6A in order to make it more equitable amongst those schools. And having a bye week is the best way for it to work.

As many have TRIED to explain to you, this is essentially 6 different tournaments. Small schools are not at a disadvantage because they don't play those big schools in the tournament. Are there a few byes in almost every class? Yes. Is this completely fair? No. But you have byes in every IHSAA team sport tournament (which impact pitchers' availability in baseball!)-- it's almost impossible to avoid those without making some schools travel crazy distances in Sectionals.
