Might as well start this one.

Starting with what will be the obvious dominant topic. I will be curious to see how many do not go anywhere, or even just do not play again.

One year ago, from D1 thru D3, there were 2,700 players who entered the portal. Only 30% were considered to have upgraded from where they came from. This year, that 3,300 number is D1 players alone.

Attention maybe? New guy on campus? New experience? New pool of girls? Switching schools is fun? Not really in college for the academics anyway?

Or am I off base? Just seems like an immature game these kids are playing. Do coaches feel like they are on pins and needles? God forbid if you say the wrong thing to a player, they'll just get up and leave.

Former New Haven standout enters the portal. Talking to a couple of his friends, I was not surprised to see this happen.

I really hope the NCAA moves the dates for the portal window. It needs to open after the championship game is played. As Cignetti and Lanning have said, it's been a distraction as they try to prepare for the game this week.

What is the rationale behind the current timeline? Is it intended to roughly coincide with the start of a new school semester?

It appears so. With the exception of football, Fall and Spring sports get two windows. It looks like one window coincides with the end of each sport’s competitive season. Then, collectively, the fall sports and spring sports have a window that coincides with the end the non-competition semester. The winter sports have a single window which opens at the end of each sport’s season.

and supposedly protects HS players ..... don't see it

4500 in portal

over 35% of College Football

Sad but when NCAA let their pride and hubris and lack of leadership dictate the last 7 years this is what you get

I’m just not sure what the solution to the problem was, or is. It’s clear almost any rule that restricts an athlete’s earning potential is going to be held an impermissible restriction on free trade. Even if the NCAA could convince membership to accept an arrangement where athletes become employees, there’s no guarantee that college football players would unionize, therefore no collectively bargained rules.

So, if the dates coincide with the timing of school semesters, start the season earlier and play the championship sooner.

This.  Play the bowl games before the season too.  Don’t know how you pick the bowls but…..

They don’t even need to start earlier. The problems are two: 1) the conference championship games exist, and 2) playoff expansion to 16 or more is inevitable.

And many other aspects... but to sit there and just pretend that you can win in court cases, then lose and then decide to just think this means that athletes are gonna get some bucks sitting at the local Walmart signing autographs or going on local tv ad was just plain ignorant, but that is what they did, they did not do enough diligence to keep the agents out of the classrooms........ and now you are scared to death litigate anymore since your went broke already doing that and losing, so now you sit and beg for Fed Govt to bail you out as an entity .......    lack of leadership in crucial moments years ago led to the last 18 months ish

Prompted by Kentucky's new transfer Coach who made Minchey a priority. Does the Coach Transfer Portal have a date limitation like the Player Portal?

Why did ND not make him a priority ?

He got beat out for the starting position. So he decided to take his ball and leave.
