HoopsCoach Posted January 8 Posted January 8 The DOE has finally released enrollment data from the fall count day for the 25-26 school year. This year is the second of a two year alignment cycle, so these numbers will be used for realignment this spring to set classes for the 26-27 and 27-28 school years. I am sharing this data to give an idea of the enrollment numbers. Note that there always seems to be a few schools that have slightly different numbers when the IHSAA releases their enrollments for classification in a realignment year. Schools with an * did not report their data to the DOE, so their enrollments are listed as the same number they gave the IHSAA in 2024. I am only listing the schools in order by enrollment and not including any projections for the split between classes. This data also does not reflect any potential success factor changes. Here are the enrollments for the schools that play 11-man football. Sparty Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Looks like portage could be 5A which could really help them post season wise. Especially if they took Merrillville’s sectional spot (Morton/Hammond Central/Munster are the other schools). Quote

First_Backer_Inside Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Knox is very intriguing to me. Win a sectional and a regional in 3A, and due to enrollment get rewarded with going down to 2A. Does enrollment trump success factor as long as you aren't getting enough points to be moved up? Knox has clearly earned enough points that if they were a 2A enrollment playing in 3A last year they would have to stay 3A. Just an interesting situation here with Knox. Not sure if this has happened before. Cascade is very close to being in the same situation. Win a state championship and possibly get rewarded with moving down to 2A depending on how the actual numbers look because they don't have enough points to be success factored up, but technically their points show they should be in 3A at least given the points they accumulated in the cycle. On the flip side of that we have Luers who didn't win a single state championship being moved up. Is there a possible flaw in the success factor and enrollment system based off of these situations, or am I missing something that says Knox and Cascade will stay in 3A due to the points they accumulated in a cycle? jakone Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Luers with enrollment of 538 is now a 4a in football. Would that make them the smallest school ever in 4a? Quote

So that is why IFCA went to a rolling cycle last year or the year before: So in 2023: They had 3a Enrollment, since that time they have fallen to 2a level, for this cycle, however, the last 2 years was only 3 points total earned in the last 2 years. Sectional in 2024, 1 point, then last year Regional Win, 2 Points. So going into next year: They enter the season with 2 points earned. If they win 2a State in 2026, then they bump to 3a right away mid enrollment classification cycle...... Hope that helps 1 Quote

Sounds like you are trying to apply the points earned to remain in a class when the Success Factor had not been achieved. My understanding is teams will follow their enrollment until they have been moved up by Success Factor. Then the points will matter if they will need to remain up or fall to enrollment. Quote

Team Sport Success Totals 2025-26.xlsx 6 points over two years to bump. 3 points to stay. Hence, Lutheran is staying in 2A. 1 Quote

No, because they only earned 0 points losing round 2 of sectionals in 2024, then state in 2025, is 4 points, now if they win Regional this upcoming year, then they would bump to 4a through the mid year of enrollment cycle, which is now referred to as the rolling SF cycle. I understand that this is the case if they are 3A enrollment, but they are right on the cusp of being 2A enrollment. What happens if they were to end up being 2A enrollment? Would they stay in 3A or drop down to 2A? From my understanding of what you have said, they would stay but it would be due to having the 4 points from last year alone. This is the only reason I can see as to why they would be different from the Knox situation, Cascade gained 4 points last year which that alone keeps them in whatever class they are in, Knox gained 2 points only from last year which doesn't put them in the 3 point threshold to stay in a certain class, so their enrollment determines where they go. 1 Quote

crimsonace1 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Of note, there WILL be adjustments to these. These are not final numbers and don't count anything as official until the IHSAA announces the classes. But they are instructive to see which schools will be on the bubble to go up/down. Don't be surprised to see some of the "small" 4As in this count end up in 3A, or vice-versa, or any other bubble schools. 2 hours ago, Coach Harvey said: Clock resets after you bump up (from everything I have been told), so we will still be 5a this year. Correct. You start at zero when you bump up. Last year was NP's first in 5A, so the Dragons have 4 points and need to win a regional to move up to 6A. Quote

Basically, the "3 points to stay in your class" ONLY applies to teams already playing up 1+ classes due to the Success Factor. So Knox's 4 points are irrelevant because they were playing in 3A due to enrollment. They would bump up to 4A had they achieved 6 points, but they would move down to 2A due to enrollment if their enrollment places them there. However, New Pal will remain 5A for two more years due to its 4 points achieved this year, because it's a 4A school that's been bumped up. 1 Quote
crimsonace1 Posted January 8 Posted January 8 From a different thread, but here are the Success Factor bumps/stay-ups/move-downs from 2025 Going up: Adams Central: 2A champ last year; regional this year. Going to 3A for 2026/27 Andrean: 2A regional last year, state title this year. Will go up to 3A for 2026/27. FW Luers: 3A semistate in 2025/26. Will move up to 4A for 2026/27 South Putnam: 1A regional last year, state title this year. Will move up to 2A for 2026/27 Currently success-factored teams staying in their class: Decatur Central: 1st year in 6A; will stay up through 2027 season if they win a *regional* next year Cathedral: 1st year in 5A. Will stay in 5A through 2027 season with a semistate win in 2026. If not, will go back to 4A in 2027. New Pal: 1st year in 5A. Will stay up through 2027 season due to their state title (4 points). Will move up to 6A in 2027 with a *regional* win next year. Heritage Hills: 1st year in 4A. Has 2 points. If they win a sectional in 2026, will remain in 4A in 2027. If they win *state* next year, they'll move up to 5A. Lutheran: Staying in 2A next year (3 points during 2 years), will need to win a regional next year to stay up in 2027. Merrillville wasn't success factored, but it would've gone to 6A with a state title this year, but its loss last night will keep the Pirates in 5A. Teams going down Chatard: Back to 3A next year (1 point during 2 years in 4A) East Central: Back to 4A next year (2 points during 2 years in 5A) LCC: Back to 1A next year (1 point during 2 years in 2A) FW Snider: Back to 5A next year (0 points during 2 years in 6A) Quote

Coach Nowlin Posted January 9 Posted January 9 Seems like what it was explained to me a couple years ago has got confused in my meathead What actually changed in the SF?? The way it was explained to me was that it was not attached to the enrollment years. That's why I was thinking New Pal was set to bump up again even after only 1 year in 5a due to the success bump they had to do mid enrollment cycle? So 2024, they win 4a, they pushed to 5a mid enrollment so how it was explained to me was that would then put them in 6a since the points roll every 2 years no matter the enrollment cycle year Quote

So 2024, they win 4a, they pushed to 5a mid enrollment so how it was explained to me was that would then put them in 6a since the points roll every 2 years no matter the enrollment cycle year It's a rolling 2-year cycle now. But when you move up to a new class, your points reset at zero. NP has 8 points the last two years, but four are from 4A (which helped to bump them up to 5A), but when they moved to 5A, the points reset at zero (they had 0 points in 5A). They now have four 5A points, so they need two more to bump up in 2027. 1 Quote
