2A Regional: Mater Dei @ Triton Central

Recommended Posts

Fans of both teams have not been frequent posters here so far but maybe that will change now that both have reached the final 8 in 2A.

Early prediction from John Harrell gives no love to the Wildcats 🐱 for 3rd week in a row.  Despite being a near 9 pt favorite in Sagarin, JH is picking TC @ home, 24 - 23.  CalPreps gives MD the nod, 22 - 14, on a neutral field so maybe take back a FG and go with 22 - 17(?).

MD will have to travel 3 hours north for what will likely be a Saturday afternoon game.  Any TC fans with advance info on day & time?  Can they overcome the long drive and use the 3rd consecutive Harrell slight as bulletin board motivation?  Long term weather forecast calls for mostly sunny day with temps in mid 40s, dropping into mid 20's at night.  TC plays on turf so field conditions should not be much of an issue, regardless of weather.

TC fans, if you would be so kind as to share your recommendations of the better local eateries, it would be much appreciated.  I personally prefer true local options instead of national chains but any feedback will be greatly appreciated.  If there is anything most West Siders enjoy besides our Bud Light and Half Pot tkts, it is good food!

Google says best route is I-69 north to Indy, I-465 East around Indy, then south on I-74 (~ 3hrs) but if there are other/better alternatives, esp when you get close to school, those would be appreciated as well.

Best of luck to both teams for a well-played and injury free game.  Hope everyone travels safely.

I’m a Shelbyville parent (thank god my oldest graduated last year), but both my younger boys play bantam for TC (way better youth program IMO).  I’m deciding between going to the TC game or watching the heavyweight battle between New Pal/cathedral.  Regardless I’ll give you my suggestions on driving directions and local eateries (Shelbyville will have more options as I believe Fairland just has the casino and a Gas station McDonald’s).

I would take 69 to martinsville and jump off at state rd 44.  That will take you through franklin and into Shelbyville.  From there you can hit 74 and it’s just a couple miles to the Fairland/casino exit. Make a left off the exit and I believe there are signs once you get into the town of Fairland that will direct you to the school.

As far as food, the vile has a few good options. New place called pudders on the circle is good, riverfront taproom (kids allowed if it matters), chicken inn,  Cagneys (a pizza king joint, but nicer than most with a bar in the back), a couple decent Mexican places (el mason and cholulas), cow palace (home cooked food), and obviously the chains (BW3, Applebee’s, pizza joints, fast food, etc.)

hope this gives you a starting point. I’ll leave the games to my friends who have kids playing. TC was good this year but also dropped a couple that left my head scratching. Here’s to a well played, injury free game.

Cheers!

With all due respect, John Harrell has no idea what he's talking about in regards to his predictions.

And definitely not enough to generate a slight or “bulletin board material.”  🙄

In years past I always thought JH’s prediction was simply the Sagarin rankings - maybe the predictor? It was completely a computer result with no human input.

But this year the results seem all over the board, which makes me wonder.

Looks like noon on Saturday.

FYI - that is Noon EASTERN or 11 am CST.  Below came from MD athletic related to wknd grade school basketball games:

Coaches,

We just got word today that the MD football game at Triton Central is going to be played at 11:00 AM CST on Saturday.

It is about a 3 hour drive to the game. Because of this, we are going to cancel our games at CC on Saturday

Cow Palace has good chili; Cagney’s breadsticks are good.

An alternate route from Martinsville is to cut through Center Grove on IN-144. There are a lot less curves that way.

With the relative ease the Wildcats have had the last two weeks  between my beloved Miners and the North Knox Warriors---  will not having been in a tight battle hurt MD come this weekend?

Certainly anything is possible with high school kids but close games with Memorial @ 10-3, Central @ 10 – 7 and Reitz @ 31- 28 should have prepared them to win in a close game.  Reitz was only team to put more than 2 TDs on starting D all season so I am putting my faith in the Defense and going with MD@ 28-14. Fingers crossed...

I mean no disrespect to Triton Central, but I just don't see this being all that close.  I realize common opponent match-ups can be misleading, but TC lost to Indian Creek by 8 and MD flat-out pounded Indian Creek in a running clock game that was never even close.  I really expected IC to give MD a game.  With what MD has done the last 2 weeks to 2 good 2A teams, what does TC do?  How do they stack up to Linton and North Knox?

I'm not sure how the 2 teams stack up but they didn't do MD any favors with the early start time Saturday.

It used to be that Visitors picked the day and Home team picks the time.  With the 11 am start, a 3 hour bus ride, and another hour to get gear unloaded and prep for game and MD needs to leave Evv by 7 am.  That is a pretty early start for high school kids.  Seems to be at least a little gamesmanship on part of TC... at least I will be home in time for dinner...

What are the IHSAA rules for these decisions or are there merely "guidelines", if that?

Visiting team picks the day.  Home team picks the time.  This could the kind of snarky decision that comes back to bite TC.  MD doesn't need any extra motivation.  They are always a very motivated team who will play hard for 48 minutes no matter the opponent or the score, but it is certainly the kind of thing that Coach Goebel can use to get ticked off more than usual...  As an example, when we played Lawrenceburg in 2018 in Regional, we picked 4pm.  It's a courtesy thing IMO.  We shall see...

So Monrovia played MD 3 years in a row, in 2014, they picked Saturday, we picked Noon EST I believe, MD wins,  next year in 2015, Monrovia at home again, MD picks Saturday, I believe we started that one at 7PM EST, Monrovia wins. 2016, Monrovia picks Friday Night, 7PM CST start I believe is what MD picked,  Monrovia wins.   Not that it says anything, but the one time I would say we picked an early time, it didn't affect MD at all.

Kind of a busch-league kind of thing for TC to do, in my opinion.
