Mid-Cycle Enrollments

Recommended Posts

School enrollments for the 2019-20 school year have been posted by the DOE. This year is NOT a “count year” for realignment, but these numbers may give some indication of enrollment trends and possible movement for the next alignment cycle. This year (19-20) is the first of a 2 year cycle, with the next realignment beginning with the 21-22 school year. Next year’s enrollment numbers (20-21) will be used to set the next realignment, not the numbers listed below.  I included only schools that play football.

A couple notes to make: Elkhart Central and Memorial will consolidate next year. If you look at the consolidations in Anderson, Muncie, and Parke County in the last decade, the consolidated schools have retained between 89%-93% of the combined enrollment of the 2 consolidating schools the year prior to merging. Using the middle of that range, 91% of the combined enrollment of Central and Memorial would put them around 2880 students. I think there will be some growth at Jimtown, Elkhart Christian (no FB) and possibly Northridge next year when the Elkhart schools merge.

There are 4 IHSAA member schools (2 that have football) that do not share enrollment data with the DOE - Culver Academies, Park Tudor, University, and FW Canterbury. I left their enrollments as they were for last year. That isn’t accurate, but it “holds their spot” in the enrollment data.

I included Dugger Union even though they are not tournament eligible to see where they would align when they become tournament eligible.  I did include Hammond Noll, but did not include Wood Memorial or Trinity Lutheran.

2019 State Champs

6A - Carmel - 5,400

5A- New Palestine 1,162

4A - Evansville Memorial - 584

3A - Indianapolis Chatard - 704

2A - Western Boone - 536

1A - Lafayette Central Catholic = 285

Add the enrollments of 3A, 4A, and 5A champs and multiply by 2.  You would still be 500 students shy of Carmel's enrollment. If Carmel wins regional next year will they be success factored up to 7A?

And Ev. Memorial is closer to a 2A enrollment than a 4A enrollment.

Harrison in West Lafayette is getting dangerously close to that 6A level.  Some interesting crowding toward the top of 1A, but not yet enough on the cusp yet to throw off 1A if IHSAA sticks with a field of 64 in 1A.

Their senior class this year has around 450, and grades 9-11 all have right at 500. The 8th grade class from their 3 feeder schools totals 572.  Not all of those will end up at Harrison, but even if it ends up being 550, that could be a net gain of 100 students.  Two things may save them from 6A for one more cycle - Elkhart consolidation and success factor.  They’ll probably be cheering for New Pal to win at least a regional next year.

What absolutely jumps out (and blows me away) from those numbers is that the 4A Champ only has 48 more students than the 2A Champ.

Amazing.

Honestly, just can’t give Memorial enough credit.

Also, based on these figures, the 2A champ will qualify for 3A without success factor.

If I recall correctly, unless the rule has changed, that will also take off the Success Factor points as well as they will be placed first by enrollment and, because of that, the Success Factor bump won't be applied.  Similarly points earned will not be to stay in that class, but instead to be promoted out of that class.  In other words, if enrollment dropped to 2A level in the two years, even if they had won a regional and a semi-state, they would move back down to 2A as they had earned the points, not because of a 2A bump to 3A, but just as a 3A competitor.

Memorial kids count 1.66X your average public school kid.  That closes the gap considerably and helps to create a more level playing field.

Incorrect. The Success Factor remains in effect even if enrollment pushes a team up.

So, if a team's enrollment pushes them into 5A (from 4A), but it also got the six SF points to move up, it would *remain* in 5A two points, even if its enrollment pushes it back to 4A.

Slightly different circumstance, but Andrean, while in 3A was “bumped” to 4A.  While in 4A, their enrollment became 2A.  They spent 2 years in 4A (while 2A in size).  They did not acquire the needed points to stay “up” in 4A and so they dropped to 3A after 2 years - even though their population remained at 2A.  They spent 2 more years in 3A before they finally moved back to 2A (after not acquiring enough points to stay “up” in 3A).

Essentially, as I understand it, it took them 4 years to move back down to their enrollment “proper” class (2A) once they had been moved up.

It looks like they fixed that loophole ... the one that I was recalling.  They used to apply enrollment first and then figure points in THAT classification to determine move-up and that also determined whether you marked with Success Factor in your subsequent two seasons or just non-SF.  Now it looks like they do a little more either/or in the decision-making process and the Success Factor moniker carries forth regardless of enrollment increase or not.  Probably more in line with the spirit of the law rather than the original wording/application.

Now if they would just fix this particular anomaly.

This was precisely the circumstance I was noting ... I asked Jason Wille about this as it happened, and he said the success factor one-class-at-a-time rule superseded the enrollment drop, therefore Andrean went from 4A to 3A ... and would have stayed in 3A with 3 points (then, now the cutoff is 2).

Memorial kids are so impressive that DT is going to anoint them with a special 2.0 Multiplier

These are not your average everyday run of the mill Catholics like you will find at Scecina or Ritter.  These are Memorial Catholics.

Scottsburg was left off list

My bad.  Scottsburg is at 771, which puts them at #130 between Brebeuf and Hammond Clark.  I can’t edit my original post, but I can repost the full list sometime.

My 2nd paragraph in the original post talks about that where it says “A couple notes to make: Elkhart...”
