Roncalli Job

Recommended Posts

Love this hire!  Although the record wasn't great at LC, the track record from similar schools in tradition rich Cincy and Covington make this a splash compared to Marsh, who never won as a head coach.  Kudos to David Lauck and the administration for making this happen.  I believe the Hoard might be making a comeback in the near future with this hire!

Why does it matter that he's coached at Catholic schools elsewhere?

Because head coaches who have success at catholic schools tend to gravitate to other catholic schools......once they've found out how hard it is to win at a public school.

Maybe he is more comfortable and familiar with coaching in a Catholic school setting and I remember reading about his hire at LC.  Nothing more.  Nothing less.

As I answered before to the question, seems logical.

Many private schools lack the resources to stay cutting edge on their endzone cameras. Typically, when a successful private school coach takes a job at a public school, he will not be nearly as successful because he isn't prepared to utilize his new state of the art endzone camera to its fullest potential. That's the best explanation for why private school coaches usually can't replicate their success at a public school.

Notable exceptions would be Kevin O'Shea at North Central and Dick Dullaghan at Carmel and Ben Davis. Both of those coaches were already up to speed on endzone camera culture when they made the jump from private to public.

Salaries are low at private schools, but one Casino Night, and you can have all the cameras you want. The latest technology is not as expensive as it use to be. You don't even need a lift any more; just put it on a pole.

You reminded me that I played at Center Grove when Butch Branson came here from Roncalli.  Nobody had end zone cameras back then!

Without getting into why Coach Marsh left, I think this is a bit strong.

Roncalli's postseason success the last 15 years has been based almost entirely upon whether they had to play Cathedral.  I think the last time Scifres beat Cathedral in the tournament was '05 or '04.  Marsh was there 3 years...lost to Cathedral twice.  His predecessor had a lot of L's to Cathedral in the decade prior.  But the Rebs made some deep runs and got a title when Cathedral moved up.  Hats off to them....a lot of other schools are in that boat, it shouldn't be seen as a slight.

Maybe I'm out of my lane, but I don't see Coach Marsh's performance being any different than the last decade of Coach Scifres' tenure.  Maybe that's just where the Reb's are right now?  Hats of to Coach Rodenberg if he can take them through Cathedral consistently.

I probably should have been more clear with that statement.

Prior to coming to Roncalli, Marsh didn't have a very good record of success as a head coach.  With that being said, a winning season in his first year at Roncalli, followed by two poor seasons....

Scott is a great coach, just has lacked the results to reflect that from a head coaching position at this point.

It is my understanding that the Rebel faithful knew that going in.

Correct....

One regular season loss to a very good DC team that year by 4, and a close loss to the Irish in the sectional.  That team had some leftover talent from the state championship team and was very good.  Success factor hurt bad that year for the Rebs.

Having seen both, I actually think that team was better (more talented) than the State Championship team from the prior year.

The talk at Roncalli during their FR season was that the 2017 seniors would be the class that would take Roncalli back to state.  2016 seniors got their a year early behind a great OL and a QB who never made a mistake in the clutch.  2017 seniors then had to deal with success factor and a bad sectional draw.
