Small Businesses Need to Contract

Guest DT

Recommended Posts

I'm watching CNBC again this evening and catching an interview with a small business owner who owns a vintage record and CD shop.

The owner has laid off most of his employees and is looking at the near term likelihood that he will need to shut down permanently without massive government infusion.

He claims the government proposal to disperse $2000 to all citizens will do nothing toward saving his business.  He says he needs help with rent and his general overall overhead.

I say let the business shut down and go away.

Suddenly, everybody is looking for a handout.  It appears that far too many businesses in this country do not have the capital to survive more than a few weeks without revenue.  Frankly, if that is all the financial backing you can afford, you should be working for someone else like Walmart or Amazon.

Democratic lawmakers are taking this opportunity to make a big push for student debt reduction.  So as a taxpayer, I am expected to bail out a deadbeat student who made horrific choices to major in underwater basket weaving at BillyBobs Online College for the Underprivileged.  And I am expected to step up and help cover Bubba's basic overhead so he can profitability run his hobby vintage record business.

No thanks.  We need massive contraction in the small business community.  Too many tattoo parlors.  Too many coffee shops.  Too many sub shops.  Too many vaping shops.  Too many gas station-convenience stores.

The cannabis business found out very quickly about oversupply, and contracted just as fast as it started.

Most of these industries will soon follow the retail model where specialty undercapitalized retailers were wiped out and overtaken by the big guys.  Its a big guy world.  Time for the hobbyist  workers who don't want a corporate environment to get ready to leave their comfort zones.  Massive contraction is coming.

I'm preparing for the wave.

You know that’s never going to happen, right?  Your little conspiracy theories were funny at first, no they’re evolved into the ridiculous....

Make that they’ve evolved, but no matter how insignificant my little typo was, his was completely asinine.  For the most part, Indiana is a rural state.   Go into any municipality you will see all types of businesses, some if which are Fortune 500 companies, but a lot aren’t.  Most of which have no plan to sell out.

If you don't think there are hundreds of thousands of small business failures coming soon, you are completely clueless.

Don't you work in finance?

I do work in finance, but you are not clairvoyant, so get off your high horse about what you think will happen.

Nanny government is coming to bail everyone out.  Of course the ultimate cost of these possibly multiple bailouts will be born by our children and grandchildren, so nobody really cares.

The federal government is nearing the limit of what it can borrow.  How many $2 trillion dollars checks do we think Uncle Sam can cash?

Life is all about winning and losing.  Its what brings us here to participate on this forum.  We enjoy the competition and the camaraderie and the challenge.

We've all had periods of wining and losing in our lives.  Show me someone who claims they have never lost and I will prove to you that thy never took a chance and put it all out on the line.

Contracting both failing high school football programs and failing small businesses is a right and proper thing to do, and it makes all the more sense if you provide a safety net for those who will fall.  I believe we can achieve both.  Cull the bottom dwellers and also provide them with a safety net and other opportunities.

Life is pretty unfulfilling if it's all about winning/losing.  It's about the journey.  Been in "losses" before in my life where there was plenty to learn and grow.  Consequently, I've been in many "wins" that weren't much more than one number on one side of the scoreboard being bigger than the other.   Like @Gipper said, "Life is better when we're all successful."  When I was a center director back in the day, I had a piece of art in my office that was captioned, "There's no better exercise for the heart than reaching out and lifting people up."

What a comeback!!!

You are just not being realistic.  It surprises me frankly.  Perhaps you have strong socialist leanings.  I would imagine you are likely a Sanders supporter.

Nothing could by further from the truth.  But this is not about me, it’s about you.  You need to get over yourself.
