NLC - 2019 Season

Recommended Posts

The start of the football season is 7 months away, but that shouldn't stop us from talking about the 2019 season in the NLC. A few things to note:

- Warsaw will have new opponents in Weeks 1 and 2 this year. The Tigers will host Huntington North in week 1 and travel to famed Ames Field for a week 2 matchup against Michigan City. Overall I would say this is a bump up in competition for Warsaw's non-conference schedule although I enjoyed the opening game against Columbia City (easy drive down US 30) and thought East Noble was a solid program to face.

- Northridge will be getting a new turf football stadium (was well as turf baseball and softball fields) that should be ready for the 2020 school year. (https://www.goshennews.com/news/local_news/million-middlebury-athletics-proposal-passes/article_011d0da1-44c4-5494-9ead-a1a36fd9ccc6.html)

Two other topics to add:

- Any news on the direction Wawasee is looking? Any announcement on whether or not they are interviewing for the position and when they would like to make a decision?

- Any news on the Goshen program? After consistent improvement from Year 1 to Year 2 and Year 2 to Year 3, the Redhawks have gone 3-18 the past 2 seasons and were not all that competitive in 2018. The newest enrollment figures that were posted today on the IHSAA website show steady, minimal growth as Goshen has gone from the 42nd largest school in the state in the 13-14 school years to now the 36th largest (and 5th largest school in 5A since Jeffersonville is being dropped down thanks to Columbus East success factor bumping them to 6A). It sure would be nice to see that program rebound and get back on the path they were headed a few years ago.

FWIW these are the enrollment #s that were posted:

2,103  Warsaw
1,923  Goshen
1,657  Concord
1,567  Memorial
1,397  Northridge
1,097  Plymouth
939  Wawasee
901  NorthWood

1,477  Mishawaka*

Added that last one for fun for the 2020 season 😄

Finally getting some action to go along with years of hope and speculation on our field upgrades/additions.  Sounds like phase 2 down the road will be adding a game gym to the actual High School as well...but for now I have attached a few images of the proposed $15 million dollar project.  Also if everything goes as planned (passed both public hearings already), should be ready to go for the first year of the merger at our neighboring Elkhart school district, maybe a way to attract a few of those Bristol kids over to Northridge.  Biggest improvements on this proposal vs our current situation other than the obvious Field Turf vs mud pit/natural grass will be a real Press Box and the home bleachers/bench will no longer be looking directly into the sun on a late summer/early fall evening.

FTA:

Quote

Keeping below the 2014 school tax rate was important for the school board when considering the plan for the new facilities. That rate is $1.33 per $100 of assessed valuation.

“The thing I’m encouraged about is we’re not bumping up the tax rate,” King said. “That is very important to me. It shows we are being very fiscally conservative with the dollars that we are given … this board understands that.”

Taxpayers dollars shouldn't be used to fund primarily extracurricular facilities.  This is another taxpayer funded boondoggle.

"MIDDLEBURY — The days of sharing athletic facilities will soon be over at Northridge High School. Following its second public meeting Tuesday, the Middlebury Community Schools Board of Education voted to move forward with the $15 million plan to build new outdoor facilities, which will include a new football and track stadium and a baseball and softball complex.

The vote for both the preliminary determination and project resolution passed unanimously 5-0.

“We’re very excited,” Superintendent Jane Allen said. “It’s a great opportunity for our students to use the facilities they deserve.”

Construction on the lot north of NHS is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2019 and will be complete in the fall of 2020.

Allen said the facilities will benefit more than 700 students, who will use the complex for physical education classes, athletics and marching band activities. Each of the new proposed facilities would have artificial turf, which board president Joanna King said is long overdue when comparing to other schools in the area.

“We’re one of the last school corporations to go in the direction of turf on our fields. We waited because we wanted to make sure we (could) do it financially,” she said at last Friday’s meeting.

Now that the vote has passed, there will be a 30-day waiting period to give the community a chance to oppose the decision. If 500 signatures are gathered before Feb. 8, the board will reconvene, but as of Tuesday’s meeting there hasn’t been any voiced opposition, Allen said.

“So far, all we’ve heard from the community is ‘It’s about time.’”

I am not a government school financing expert.  Please explain in detail how a government education entity can spend $15 million on a primarily extracurricular activities project without increasing taxes.  What educational programs,  facilities maintenance, salaries, positions, etc. are being cut to pay for this boondoggle?

Because they can take out GEO Bonds and pay it back over time.  They most likely have debt coming off of their books.  They can get the Bond and keep their tax rate the same.  Now, this negates the fact that they are not decreasing the tax rate as they could.  This is a common practice with Indiana school systems now that the State has required referendums for any capital project over $10M.

Doing it this way protects the educational monies that come to the school systems from the State.   Pretty ingenious way to do it.   Some school systems use if for maintenance, repairs, classroom additions.   Many advantageous ways to take advantage of these bonds.

So one debt gets paid off, then just incur more debt. And the taxpayers are left none the wiser.   Must be nice to have a guaranteed taxpayer income stream to continuously fund this debt, and some bank(s) get rich off of it as well!

agreed, wish we still had them on our schedule, that program has really turned things around!

(Warsaw fan) even more excited about this addition. MC has revived its program. They're fast, physical and appear to be constructively violent (thin-slicing from videos). This will be a test for our boys in the trenches, who continue to make great strides in the weight room. Our speedy, athletic DBs will be challenged, too. Warsaw graduated one starting DB this past season, and the contenders for meaningful minutes run deeper than the three likely returning starters. There are next-man-up opportunities on the front seven, too, and this will be an early test to see how well Warsaw reloads that group. The scrapping for positions open due to graduation will be very interesting to watch in the summer. I believe the staff likes to view preseason as an open canvas. The competitive pre-season will hopefully fuel the competitive regular season spirit.

Again - FINALLY.  SF can't wait to see the finished project, maybe start coming to a few games again.  (especially without the direct sun glare happening, will be a welcome thing)
