Suspended or cancelled season

Enough of the "long term effects" BS from something we just starting dealing with 6 months ago.

Its these kinds of fear porn stories why we are being paralyzed by something we shouldn't be anymore.

While I appreciate that folks want to move on, it was just a bit over 5 months ago, on this very site, that the following post showed up to, I'm assuming, discredit or play down, COVID.  Given 160,000+ dead since then, it hasn't aged well.

I'm not reading thru 14 pages of this so bear with me. Those that believe the season should be cancelled or postponed to the spring, what would be the signs to return to play? What are the deciding factors that will make you feel comfortable to have a season?

I would feel better if the guidelines were followed better by all.  Wish the state would mandate temp taking daily which is not that hard not costly.  But we have o control of one's personal behavior

It has to be a school by school decision on what is acceptable to continue the season.  In some areas of the state, the threat is not high compared to other parts.  Starke County should not tell another county what to do and vice verse.

So you feel comfortable playing against watered down competition in the state tournament? Do you have any compassion for your colleagues who aren’t allowed to play?

Ridiculous question.    It is a school by school decision.

The government has the ability to mandate vaccinations under its charge for the public good, but the question ends up being whether it would enforce said mandate.  There are places where mask wearing is mandated by the local governing bodies and the enforcement wing is flat out stating that they won't enforce it.

More than 200 Delaware Community students quarantined

Quote

MUNCIE, Ind. — Delaware Community Schools has sent 228 students home to quarantine to help prevent the spread of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

A football player at Delta High School tested positive for the virus several days ago, and the school district continues to be aware of only that one case.

"However, after yesterday, we know of a few students who are in the testing process, are experiencing many of the COVID-19 symptoms, and may have direct connections to our positive case," Superintendent Reece Mann told The Star Press.

As of Tuesday morning, the following numbers of students were in quarantine:

  • Royerton Elementary School — 1
  • Eaton Elementary School — 6
  • Albany Elementary School — 0
  • Delta Middle School — 68
  • Delta High School — 153

Enrollment at Del-Com is around 2,600.

"Obviously, making an attempt to contact trace the entire football team was not only problematic but without specific seating charts and cameras to monitor, the administration and coaches felt it safest to begin the process of quarantining to minimize potential exposures of greater magnitudes," Mann said in an email.

"Unfortunately, we are in a situation where parents seem to be sending their child/children to school even when they are symptomatic or possibly even when they, as parents, have been tested and are awaiting the results, later to find out they are positive," the superintendent went on.

"We continue to contact trace when we have students who have been exposed to the virus outside of school and exhibit the symptoms associated with the virus," Mann reported. "Obviously, this seems to be a daily tracking and hopefully, when some of the test results come back, we will shorten the days needed for several students to be in quarantine."

Greg Kile, director of curriculum/assessment at the district, is serving as the point person when phone calls from principals and school nurses come in to the central office.

Mann and Kile are consulting with the Delaware County Health Department during development of individual plans based on each case reported.

Kile created a detailed spreadsheet that tracks each occurrence along with anticipated return dates for students.

The superintendent applauded the Delaware County Health Department for serving as "a viable asset as we work through each situation to formulate a plan to proceed. On each occasion, we are utilizing classroom seating charts, bus seating charts, cameras for hallways/cafeteria to assist in notifying the appropriate student and parent."

Nearly 90 of the high school students are scheduled to return on Aug. 19.

Appears to be turning into a complete debacle

Good luck with that.  Millions of people will fight against that. Millions. You can't rush something into production and start injecting people with an unknown product when you don't incur any of the liability on if it works and what serious side effects it might cause.

Plus we already know it won't "cure" anything.

But isn't this "quarantine" really just "don't come into the school building"?   How can government school officials force an individual to quarantine in their own home, and not go anywhere else?

I think you got the point.  You can't enforce anything in our free country as effectively as say a communist regime can.  Given our freedoms...we can't really even do a shutdown very well.  We are going to have to learn to work with protocols and keep pretty much every aspect of society going.  We have that freedom of choice to stay home and in most cases to do virtual education.

You just explained everything. The only thing keeping anyone honest is the chance of a season for the players. If not, they will just do their thing.

France isn't communist, England isn't communist and Canada isn't communist. They shut down and it seems their slowly getting back to life. They have freedoms like we do. We just didn't treat this seriously sooner.
