Enrollment figures

Per Kyle Neddenreip:

The IHSAA executive committee voted to delay realignment and reclassification for one year due to fluctuation in enrollment likely caused by pandemic. Except for programs that move up due to tourney success factor, schools remain in current class in each sport for one more year.

So WeBo will most likely take Chatard’s spot in the 3A sectional. And of course Chatard will move to Roncalli’s sectional.

I’m curious who will get shuffled to 24

I didn’t realize Sectional 22 was only 7 teams.

WeBo to 28. Chatard to 22 is my prediction

I believe that is what has caused the delay is trying to sort out how to handle the actual number of students for enrollment when you have students all over the place virtually and other wise

seems to be a nightmare

I honestly would be ok with everyone staying put (minus success factor) for 1 more year, then start the 2 year cycle then.

With the consolidation of the Hammond high schools, and the addition of Dugger Union in 22-23 (needs to be included in the upcoming cycle), I think there will be 318 schools with football.  That puts 32 in 5A and 6A, 2 of the lower classes with 63 and 2 with 64.  I am not sure if there is an IHSAA policy on which class should have fewer schools, but in basketball they usually align 1A with the most and 4A with the least.  The plan I read for the Hammond schools was to realign the district to split their enrollment somewhat evenly, which would put them around 1700 or so students in each high school.  Here are the numbers I have (slightly different from crimsonace).

*school does not report enrollment to DOE.

If Merrillville is 5A, that's a major, major change.

Portage, Chesterton, Crown Point and Lake Central do NOT have to beat Merrillville just to get out of the sectional.?

That's sunshine on a rainy day.

Help me here.

Valparaiso went to the 2019 5A finals and the 2020 5A semistate.

Valpo moves up to 6A, right?

Also Hammond combining 3 schools, will they be 6a?

Probably not. I believe the plan was to re-align the boundaries within the district to try to balance the enrollments at Hammond Morton and the new Hammond Central.  I don’t think it will be a true combination of 3 schools into only Hammond Central.  2 schools that somewhat evenly split around 3400 kids puts them in the neighborhood of 1700, which would be 5A.

So does Hammond Central (previously Hammond High) Move up to 4A or stay at 3A with 1700 students.  Morton is already 4A.  By the wording of the news release Central would stay at 3A??  All it is is a name change.

Wouldn’t 1700 be pushing 5A?

Yes, probably would.  If the IHSAA moves H Central up who then comes down.  We have already lost 1 school, Hammond Clark.   What do they do?

Combining with the current Hammond High.

A name change PLUS an addition of 800 new students  Sure does not sound like a 3A school to me

Assuming Merrillville in 5A with enrollment, one figures Sectional 9 looks like:

Merrilville, Munster, Morton, Hammond Central

Gavit and Morton into 5A as the NEW Morton High.

Clark and Hammond High into 5A as the NEW Hammond Central.

Sectional 10 would then be:

LaPorte, Michigan City, Valparaiso, Mishwaka???

Lots and lots of teams staying east this season.
