Lawrence North and Lawrence Central - The gap is widening

These two schools are going in opposite directions

LC used to be one of my favorite teams to watch.  Their upset of Warren Central during the championship run was epic and one of the biggest upsets in state history.  But the program has fallen on hard times.  John Rodenberg found immediate success at Roncalli after bailing out quickly at LC

The LN football program continues to rise under Pat Mallory

LN enrollment is rising.  LC enrollment is falling and the school can hardly be describes as "mega" like it's MIC counterparts

LN and LC hoops are on completely different levels

Is open enrollment hurting LC?

Does the school have an image problem?

Should LC throw in the towel on its MIC experience and find a smaller sandbox to play in?

Can the athletic programs be fixed, short term or long term?

Lawrence Central's athletic program is in trouble.  Shouldn't the township, the admin and the AD evaluate other options for the school?

Yes, that 2012 championship was an epic year.  Especially beating a 5-6 Warren Central powerhouse! Biggest upset my arse!

You know which upset Im talking about Stax.  Just got the wrong year.  35-14 LC  Might have been the biggest upset in MIC history.  Upsets happen very rarely in the conference

LC is currently undergoing a significant renovation/expansion, so Lawrence Township is certainly expecting the school's enrollment to grow, although the township is already pretty built out. There really aren't any other sandboxes for them to play in - go back to Conference Indiana (which would add significant travel times).

Is open enrollment hurting? Who knows. As of the latest DOE report, Lawrence Township has 1,348 students who live in the district and go to another public school (which is the second-highest among Marion County townships to Warren). Assuming a sizable number of those end up at Mt. Vernon, that would likely affect LC a bit more. But Lawrence Township also has 1,293 students coming in from other districts (which is second in the state to Penn - once you take out the two school districts that run large online charter schools).

You also have the issue of Lawrence Township has three large private schools in or near its district - Cathedral, Chatard and Heritage Christian, all of which provide nearby options. Cathedral and Chatard are not too far down the road from LC. Heritage is a little closer to LN.

Bigger upsets...

LN 27, Carmel 20 2016

TH North 14, Warren Central 10, 2013

TH North 17, Ben Davis 14, 2006

LC wasn't in the MIC in 2010.

TH North had some nice teams back them.  They were big and very physical, much more than THS.

Coach Barrett did a nice job at TH North despite what his record turned out to be.

No way to avoid a losing record at THN and THS while playing a MIC schedule.  Those schools had 2100 students at peak enrollment   I remember seeing North play at Center Grove and they were very physical and aggressive.  CG won the game but it was a dog fight    THN reminded me a little of Carmel.  Not flashy, just in your face.
