HYPOTHETICAL** Week 1 Point Spreads

Recommended Posts

Hopefully this isn’t frowned upon but I thought it would be fun to create point spreads for some of the noteworthy games each week of the season and see what people think. It can seem too easy to pick winners in hs football in Indiana but with a point spread it’s a whole different story. I am attempting to cover all the “big” games I can but it’s certainly easy to miss a few with the large amount to deal with.

This was not created to have people guess every single game (if you want to, go for it), but rather to garner discussion for games that perhaps had no other thread to be discussed in.

Reply with as little or as much as you’d like. If you feel you know 1 game much better than the others let us know what you think will happen.

Keep in mind I am creating these lines myself. If you believe I misjudged it badly please let me know and give your reasoning. I am creating these as I see fit, I have one favorite team who is not even included this week, no favoritism is used.

This is being made to create discussion, nothing more nothing less, no hard feelings intended. Please take this lightly. I love this site and cannot wait for games to kickoff tomorrow night.

I think you’re off on the Mishawaka game but other then that looks good

I do not gamble, so point spreads are pretty foreign to me. I believe I’ve heard over the years, that +3 points (in this instance +3.5 points) to the home team basically means it is a “toss up” and the home team had that spread because the game is played at their field.

Is that fairly accurate?  Thanks. Cool idea @Bears62

Have fun with this fellas.

Not an expert on all four corners of the state as I follow some areas more closely than others, but many of these seem aggressive.  Week 1 is always the hardest to predict for obvious reasons.

I'll take a stab at a few (I may have a problem):

Westfield +14.5

Ben Davis (E)

Carmel +18

Warren +27

Lawrence North +5.5

New Pal +5

Fishers +4.5

Pike +15.5

Lawrence Central +19

Whiteland (E)

Brebeuf +29.5

Makes each game 2 for 1.  No other reason to keep a game with a 4 touchdown differential on in the second half unless you’ve laid spread money.

Not for high school.  Bet all you want on college and the NFL.  Keep the high school kids away from that crap.  They read this forum.

Do we want Center Grove kids walking the halls telling their friends and teachers that they are 14.5 pt favorites over Warren Central?

I hope not.

Well they're a 27 point favorite in this hypothetical scenario.

Guessing Bears62 hypothetical handicapping won't have single effect on tonight's outcome. Now that is something I'm willing to bet on 😛

Geez man.  It’s all in fun.  I think you are severely overthinking this one.

There is not money involved so this is no different than pulling up the JH site and seeing what the prediction is on there.

Disagree

It reinforces the gambling narrative.

Young adults  today dont follow the NFL because they are passionate about their team.  They follow for betting and fantasy.

These are the same people who are now using the stock market as a casino.

Point spread = gambling.  Perception.  You cant separate the two.

I completely am with DT on this one.

Strongly urge the admin to take down this thread.

Bad precedent to set on opening night.

We should never reinforce any potential link between high school sports and gambling.  Its just plain wrong.

Same here.  I never spent really any time understanding how they work or what they mean.

It's essentially a handicap. If the Colt's are +7 against the Patriots, in the gambling world the game theoretically starts with the Colt's leading 7-0. The Patriot's (-7) would need to win the game by at least 8 points for the bet to be declared a winner.

Indiana law prohibits wagering on high school and amateur youth sporting events. I would avoid even the perception of supporting gambling on high school events. Maybe a lawyer can say if this is a risk for GID

No, it is not...I appreciate your concern as I have contacted a highly ranked lawyer in the Carmel area.

Quote
To make predictions for upcoming games, simply compare the RATINGS of
the teams in question and allow an ADDITIONAL 2 points for the home
team. Thus, for example, a HOME team with a rating of 92 would be
favored by 5 points over a VISITING team having a rating of 90.
Or a VISITING team with a rating of 89 would be favored by 7 points
over a HOME team having a rating of 79.

Quick, someone tell John Harrell and Jeff Sagarin that their website can be construed as promoting gambling.

Personally, I never touch the stuff, but simply stating how many points Team A is favored over Team B has been around for years.

Given some of the things that I've seen posted on here about schools, Warren Central being a 14.5 point underdog is probably the least offensive.

Yeah…I tend to follow this line of thinking.  Personally, I hate gambling in all its forms (I’ve never even bought a lotto ticket personally….let alone bet on sports) and would prefer to keep it as far from HS sports as possible - even incidentally.

To a point, every time folks predict scores here they are doing it to an extent.

With that, you have Harrell’s page and, frankly, the Indy Star each week predicting scores.

Still, it bothers me more than a little to see it here but, in the end, I’m not sure you prohibit it.

Edit - I do have a ton of sympathy with DT’s view on this, though, but I think that this bridge was crossed a long time ago.
